SUMMARY:Great Trees Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:A ride to look at some trees. Boring. Maybe – but trees\, we are realizing\, are not just a taken-for-granted background. They matter. They soak up CO2 and are good for our health.  Inspiration comes from a Zoom talk in March to Better Streets Southwark by Paul Wood about Tree Talk and his amazing Tree Map. Route is inspired by Paul’s Great Trees of London Map (£8 from book shops). Start is 10am from the Southwark Needle\, south end of London Bridge\, SE1 2PF. Handy for London Bridge Station if you want to get to the start by train.  Then an 11 mile circuit to 6 of the Great Trees.  Will go to Burgess Park\, Lucas Gardens Camberwell\, New Cross Gate\, Sayes Court Park Deptford\, Southwark Park and finish with the Tree of Heaven near Tooley St. Should end back at London Bridge at around 12 noon. Bruce leading.  Annotated route map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1WMWt1qLR_4_obNGcwNHD3Sghfv22eLEW&usp=sharing \nNOTE. You must register on Eventbrite\, https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/great-trees-cycle-ride-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-159289305601. Please give a phone number when registering as it may be needed for Track and Trace.  If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:CSW is a co-operative venture\, funded by TfL and led by the police\, to remind drivers that speed limits apply to them too.  Cyclists have good reason to care about speeding on the road and so\, step forward\, Southwark Cyclists volunteers. We will be holding the speed gun on Dog Kennel Hill in East Dulwich under the protection of PCSO Kevin Phillips. It’s Kevin who fields the (generally contrite) van drivers who worry that a fine is coming their way. A depressingly large proportion start by asking what the speed limit is (it’s always 20). To join in or get more info email kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be pleased to hear from you.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Road peace campaigner Amy will be holding the speedgun and doing her bit to discourage dangerous driving. CSW is a TfL-funded\, police-led\, collaboration between the police and the community. The volunteer holds the speedgun and shouts out the numbers and organiser PCSO Kevin Phillips takes down the details and arranges the rude letters that go out to drivers from TfL. Repeat offenders find themselves on the police bad-drivers database receiving unwanted extra attention from the Met. To join in email Kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be delighted to hear from and keen to fit you in. Enjoy.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist (me) will be holding the speed gun in Kingswood Road and shouting out the  numbers. Anything 25 and over gets the driver a rude letter from TfL and the prospect of a demand for money if they carry on. Writing down the numbers and doing all the admin will be PCSO Kevin Phillips (pictured). To join in or ask a question email kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. Highly recommended.

Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling. \nCody Dock is one of those places that is guaranteed to renew your faith in the human race!  Come and find out why. Amanda leading. Here are her notes on the ride. “Cody Dock is open and looking forward to our visit.  The dock is in a bit of a state though as a new cafe is being built where that old ship was and there is a lack of seating (temporary cafe is now situated at the main entrance.  There is a porta-loo.  Route: Thames Path – O2 – Thames Barrier – Woolwich Ferry – City Airport – Beckton Park – Greenway – River Lee Path – Three Mills – Cody Dock – Canning Town/Bow Creek – Dollar Bay – Mudchute – Island Gardens. \n“The cross river tunnels:  At Woolwich one of each of the lifts (North or South are out of action to discourage users) so I suggest we wait for the free Woolwich Ferry on the outward leg.  On the return Northside- Island Gardens\, some could take the DLR to Greenwich if the lifts are out. \nRoute: 17.5 miles  3.5 hour ride with ½hour stop at CD  (I rode the route in just under two hours).  Fairly flat ride\, with a few bridges to up and over.”

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be pointing a speed gun at hurriedly braking drivers on Salter Road. With her will be PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down number plates\, make and colour of those who didn’t stamp on the brakes hard enough. Getting noted down for the first time gets you a letter from TfL pointing out the error of your ways. Three strikes gets you onto the police national database of badly behaved drivers and extra attention on the road. This can be an enjoyable and even exciting way of passing time. To join in email Kevin on Kevin.j.Phillips@met.police.uk and he will be delighted to add you to his workforce.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists volunteer Werner will be wielding the speedgun and shouting out the (outrageous) speeds on Salter Road. PCSO Kevin Phillips will be taking their numbers\, makes and colours and organising the reproving letters coming their way. First two strikes are letters with growing levels of threat. Third puts the numbers on the police national computer for special attention. \nThe end of lockdown seems to have driven drivers nuts. Lunatics passing within centimeters of my handlebars and shouting insults from their car windows are continuous in my vicinity. Too much Spice and not enough alcohol. T \nYou can calm them down a bit by volunteering for Speedwatch which is enjoyable revenge (personal testimonial). If you feel the call but the schedule is inconvenient\, then Kevin will cheerfully adapt it to your availability and your chosen spot. \nSpeedwatch is a good deed in a slightly brightening world. It’s run by the Met at the behest of TfL.  Kevin is a jovial soul. More info on the virtues of Speedwatch here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-in-a-20mph-zone/. Then backstreet route to Blackfriars bridge crossing south onto C6 and back to Canada Water via Q1 (now Cycleway 10). Route at http://bit.ly/39F1pET. Note repeat of rides on July 4th and Sept 19th. Great photos from Sept 19th on Healthy Riders Facebook Group (see Philippa’s post on Sept 20th)

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be helping the police with their enquiries in Long Lane. Specifically their enquiries into who’s driving too fast and not spotting the guys in yellow fluorescent holding a speed gun. Answer: a surprisingly large number. The volunteer holds the gun\, clocks the speeds and shouts them out. PCSO Kevin Phillips knows the car makes and takes their number plates. Success. It’s remarkable fun. To join in\, email Kevin at Kevin.j.Phillips@met.police.uk and he will add you to his little list. You can suggest likely spots and Kevin will check them out. The suggested schedule includes weekends. It’s fun.

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride - Rotherhithe to Peckham Routes
DESCRIPTION:NOTE you must register on Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/rotherhithe-to-peckham-routes-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-154263892455 \nFlat 2 hour\, 9 mile ride so pretty easy-paced. Some cycle lane or path\, also some busier stretches.  A few years back funding for a new cycle route from Rotherhithe to Peckham was announced. This has not happened. But worth looking at existing routes and at places where new developments offer opportunities to improve routes or provide additional quality cycle path. Plan is to go from Canada Water to Peckham\, then back all way to Thames by a different route\, then return to Canada Water.  So a good ride for learning routes.  Probable route on Google Maps at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1vqbZT9Ch__vRxIJ6Z6QXaQVQzQB_JMqk&usp=sharing . This also indicates some of the places where developments have occurred or are planned. \nWe will keep everyone as safe as possible by observing all the Covid Regulations. Most importantly we will be maintaining routinely a 2m social distance\, never less than 1m. Particularly important to maintain social distancing from other users on shared paths.  Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users can maintain 1-2 m and feel safe. Just in case we need them\, good idea to bring a face mask.  Obviously please do not turn up to this event if you are displaying symptoms of Covid-19.

DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be holding the speed gun and shouting out car speeds on Lordship Lane. With him will be PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down car numbers\, makes and colours.  A succession of drivers\, spotting them\, will be standing on their brakes. It’s a good way to help them remember what the speed limit is (20mph for those interested).  One small step towards putting the motor car in its place. SUMMARY:Goodbye Ursula – Tideway Tunnel Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Registration on Eventbrite as usual. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/goodbye-ursula-tideway-tunnel-cycle-ride-tickets-153362281713  Note if all places are already booked it is worth checking back as there are usually several cancellations during the week. Please give a phone number when registering as it may be needed for Track and Trace.  If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling. \nFlat 10 mile ride so pretty easy-paced. Lots of segregated cycle lane\, some busier stretches. \nInspiration for this ride is the departure of Tunnel Boring Machine Ursula from Chambers Wharf. Ursula has finished her 7.5km journey from Battersea and is heading off to Rotterdam on Saturday.  The gamble is that she will not depart until high tide (12.55pm).  If you are joining the ride from the east or south east\, then suggest you ride to the start via Cherry Garden and take a look. \nRide will retrace Ursula’s journey. We will cross London Bridge and ride Cycleway 3 and the embankment to Chelsea Bridge\, passing the Thames Tideway sites at Blackfriars and Victoria Embankment. From Chelsea Bridge we will head back\, first stopping to look at the Kirtling Rd site\, next to Battersea Power Station\, from which Ursula set out. Return route will follow the Thames passing another TT site at Albert Embankment. We may save time by using cycleway 14 from Blackfriars to Jamaica Rd.  Route on Google Maps at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1bSmV2siDD5yTalitZDvsd4_yCAPd6A95&usp=sharing \nFor anyone interested\, Ursula’s schedule is: Thursday May 6th\, large floating crane arrives\, Friday 7th Transfer of Ursula to barge.  There is of course no guarantee the engineers will be able to keep to this schedule\, but we will have a ride along the Thames anyway. \nImportant – read the detailed instructions regarding Covid regs on Eventbrite when registering.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:TfL and the Met are studying the Speedwatch stats and trying to make patterns with them. So this Speedwatch will be in a location only previously done at the weekend. At the weekend it catches loads of drivers\, particularly cabbies. The aim is to see whether it is better or worse when the tradesmens’ vans are rushing about. Doing the work of holding the speedgun and writing down the numbers will be a Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer and PCSO Kevin Phillips. Kevin does all the organising and to join in email Kevin on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He’s very jovial (see pic) and will be glad to hear from you. SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer\, Werner will be pointing his speed gun at motorists in SE16. The speed limit is 20mph guys. It may be a wide and empty road but that doesn’t mean you can make up your own rules. The guy in charge is PCSO Kevin Phillips who does the organising and provides protective muscle if any if required. Mostly not though because these sessions are hugely popular with everyone other than motorists. To join in email Kevin at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be very pleased to hear from you.

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride - London Bridge to Greenwich
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Evenbrite so that we can limit numbers: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/healthy-cycle-ride-london-bridge-to-greenwich-tickets-150503741743  Please give a phone number when registering as it may be needed for Track and Trace.  If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling. \nJamie has a great route planned. Lots to see\, will have several stops at places of interest\, completely flat. 12 miles. 10am – 1pm. Start/finish Southwark Needle\, south end of London Bridge. Handy for London Bridge Station if you want to get to the start by train.  Route: Tower Bridge\, St Katherines Dock\, ending outward leg at Island Gardens.  Cross by tunnel or DLR (bring Travel Card and face mask). Return on south side of Thames to London Bridge.  Easy ride so if no hold ups\, may get finished by 12.30. \nWe will keep everyone as safe as possible by observing the Covid Regulations. \nWe have 2 waves starting for each ride. SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer Sally Eva will be wielding the speedgun and PCSO Kevin Phillips will be taking the numbers of offending vehicles. These sessions are organised by the Met in collaboration with TfL. TfL do the funding and the volunteers and the Met do the doing. Some of the speeds they find are rather remarkable https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-in-a-20mph-zone/ \nThere are lots of fun aspects to this: watching drivers slam their brakes on when they spot you is sort of  bitter-sweet. They slowed down (good) but now you can’t catch them. You can join in. Email Kevin on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and state your preferences. He’s an affable guy with the correct views on speeders (he’s against them). He’s flexible about locations though he wants to check them out first.
