SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be holding the speedgun\, with police protection in the shape of PCSO Kevin Phillips (see pic). Passing pedestrians can be relied on to support speed control and often suggest other roads which double as race tracks. Passing drivers not so much. There’s me thinking that car drivers were peaceful\, law-abiding individuals\, deeply shocked by cyclists jumping red lights. I was totally unprepared for the shouting\, jeering and hooting aimed at the police. Lawless\, I say\, lawless. \nSo if you want to stand up for the Rule of Law\, volunteer for Speedwatch. Protect the police from ruffians. Email Kevin at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and tell him you want to join in. He will send you a schedule and cheerfully discuss dates\, times and locations with you. It’s good fun\, enjoy. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Peckham to Shooters Hill - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:You must register on Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/peckham-to-shooters-hill-healthy-cycle-ride-tickets-165794310245.  When you register please give a phone number as it may be needed for Track and Trace.  If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling. \nTypical easy-paced Southwark Cyclists Healthy Ride.  Aim is to get to Severndroog Castle on top of Shooters Hill.  Start time 9.30 (note earlier than usual time). Start Peckham Square (Peckham library\, Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre\, SE15 5RY). Duration 3.5 hours including refreshment break at the Castle. Outward route uses bus lanes on busy A202 and A2 to Deptford Bridge. Then off road and quiet roads to Eltham Well Hall via Lewisham and Kidbrooke Village. Brief stop in Well Hall Pleasaunce to prepare for the summit ascent.  Next a short ride to the southwest corner of Jack Wood and the steep (but short) path up to Severndroog Castle. Plenty of time to just walk up – really steep section only 300m long.  Usually there is a small café operating at the Castle\, but may be best to bring own refreshments. Fast return route using initially busy Shooters Hill Road\, then the underpass at the Sun in the Sands roundabout and quiet streets to Greenwich Park.  Whiz down the hill in the park and more quiet streets to Quietway 1 at the Halfpenny Bridge. Finally Q1 to Surrey Canal Rd\, Bridgehouse Meadows and quiet streets back to Peckham Square.  Bruce leading\, route at https://bit.ly/2Fv5z5Z \nPreviously did this ride Jan 19th 2019. SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark cyclist Werner will be holding the speedgun on Salter Road SE1\, trying to make the roads safer for all of us. With him will be PCSO Kevin Phillips to write down offenders’ car numbers and deal with drivers trying to argue back. This doesn’t happen often (unwise to argue with someone in police uniform) but it does happen. One guy wasted Kevin’s time refusing to believe that drivers kill more pedestrians than cyclists do. Takes all sorts. \nSpeedwatch is fun and you can do it too. To join in\, mail Kevin Phillips at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will sort you out a spot.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist Werner will be holding the speedgun on Salter Road. He likes to bag lots of speeders and usually does. At the moment he’s the CSW top scorer with five pages of wrong-doers car numbers and top speeds in the 40s. \nYou can join in. To book a session text PCSO Kevin Phillips on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will sort you out with a time and place. It’s fun. The response from pedestrians is very warm and enthusiastic — criticism is usually limited to “you ought to go down there\, the speeds are even worse”. Drivers are a bit more luke-warm but subdued. After all\, one of you is a policeman in full uniform.

They are great fun. Dates and times can be arranged and re-arranged to fit your personal bug bears. To join in email Kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be pleased to hear from you.

SUMMARY:Peckham to Lewisham and the Quaggy River - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE You must register on Eventbrite for Healthy Rides at present due to Covid regulations. Link for this ride is: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/peckham-to-the-quaggy-river-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-161270379045 \nEasy-paced 2 hour ride\, this one mostly quiet roads with a few path sections through parks. Some gentle hills\, nothing extreme.  Start/finish Peckham Square (next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre\, SE15 5RY).\nThe Quaggy meets the Ravensbourne close to Lewisham station where much new development is taking place. The opportunity has been taken to open up this built-in water feature as “Confluence Park”. The ride will follow the Quaggy\, mostly hidden behind buildings in a sad concrete culvert. At Manor Park the river emerges\, but is still hidden away to start with\, although at the south end of the park you can get close on natural banks. Then to Manor House Gardens where the Quaggy is kept in a channel\, behind railings. In contrast to the Ravensbourne in Brookmill Park looks like a real river. Lots of information about the Quaggy on the web site of QWAG (Quaggy Waterways Action Group\, https://qwag.org.uk/river-quaggy/) whose “goal is to demonstrate that rivers can be major assets to an urban environment – bringing natural beauty\, educational facilities and wildlife into urban lives.”\nRoute is at https://goo.gl/svHy65. Outward leg will use the northern\, less hilly route via Bridgehouse Meadows and Fordham Park to Brookmill Park. Return leg goes past the Lewisham Leisure Centre\, Brockley Station and Nunhead. Leader Bruce. 16.5km\, just over 10 miles.  Last did this ride 22nd Feb 2020\, see report   https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2020/peckham-to-lewisham-and-the-quaggy-river/

With him will be PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down the numbers and speeds. SUMMARY:Great Trees Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:A ride to look at some trees. Boring. Maybe – but trees\, we are realizing\, are not just a taken-for-granted background. They matter. They soak up CO2 and are good for our health.  Inspiration comes from a Zoom talk in March to Better Streets Southwark by Paul Wood about Tree Talk and his amazing Tree Map. Route is inspired by Paul’s Great Trees of London Map (£8 from book shops). Start is 10am from the Southwark Needle\, south end of London Bridge\, SE1 2PF. Handy for London Bridge Station if you want to get to the start by train.  Then an 11 mile circuit to 6 of the Great Trees.  Will go to Burgess Park\, Lucas Gardens Camberwell\, New Cross Gate\, Sayes Court Park Deptford\, Southwark Park and finish with the Tree of Heaven near Tooley St. Should end back at London Bridge at around 12 noon. Bruce leading.  Annotated route map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1WMWt1qLR_4_obNGcwNHD3Sghfv22eLEW&usp=sharing \nNOTE. SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:CSW is a co-operative venture\, funded by TfL and led by the police\, to remind drivers that speed limits apply to them too.  Cyclists have good reason to care about speeding on the road and so\, step forward\, Southwark Cyclists volunteers. We will be holding the speed gun on Dog Kennel Hill in East Dulwich under the protection of PCSO Kevin Phillips. It’s Kevin who fields the (generally contrite) van drivers who worry that a fine is coming their way. A depressingly large proportion start by asking what the speed limit is (it’s always 20). DESCRIPTION:Road peace campaigner Amy will be holding the speedgun and doing her bit to discourage dangerous driving. CSW is a TfL-funded\, police-led\, collaboration between the police and the community. The volunteer holds the speedgun and shouts out the numbers and organiser PCSO Kevin Phillips takes down the details and arranges the rude letters that go out to drivers from TfL. SUMMARY:Cutty Sark to Cody Dock via Woolwich - Healthy Ride +
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: You must register on Eventbrite\, https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-cody-dock-via-woolwich-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-156248089241. Please give a phone number when registering as it may be needed for Track and Trace.  If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling. \nCody Dock is one of those places that is guaranteed to renew your faith in the human race!  Come and find out why. Amanda leading. Here are her notes on the ride. “Cody Dock is open and looking forward to our visit.  The dock is in a bit of a state though as a new cafe is being built where that old ship was and there is a lack of seating (temporary cafe is now situated at the main entrance.  There is a porta-loo.  Route: Thames Path – O2 – Thames Barrier – Woolwich Ferry – City Airport – Beckton Park – Greenway – River Lee Path – Three Mills – Cody Dock – Canning Town/Bow Creek – Dollar Bay – Mudchute – Island Gardens. \n“The cross river tunnels:  At Woolwich one of each of the lifts (North or South are out of action to discourage users) so I suggest we wait for the free Woolwich Ferry on the outward leg.  On the return Northside- Island Gardens\, some could take the DLR to Greenwich if the lifts are out. \nRoute: 17.5 miles  3.5 hour ride with ½hour stop at CD  (I rode the route in just under two hours).  Fairly flat ride\, with a few bridges to up and over.”

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be pointing a speed gun at hurriedly braking drivers on Salter Road. With her will be PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down number plates\, make and colour of those who didn’t stamp on the brakes hard enough. Getting noted down for the first time gets you a letter from TfL pointing out the error of your ways. Three strikes gets you onto the police national database of badly behaved drivers and extra attention on the road. This can be an enjoyable and even exciting way of passing time. To join in email Kevin on Kevin.j.Phillips@met.police.uk and he will be delighted to add you to his workforce.
