SUMMARY:Canada Water\, Sydenham and the Waterlink Way - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/canada-water-sydenham-and-the-waterlink-way-cycle-ride-tickets-218779283727 >. \nMeet Deal Porter Square (next to Canada Water Library\, opposite CW Station) 10am and take the Overground train to Sydenham. Taking bikes on the Overground is surprisingly easy especially at step free stations like Canada Water and Sydenham. Cycle down to Bells Green and join the Waterlink Way (Nat Route 21). Follow one of the nicest stretches of off-road path in London to Ladywell Fields\, then continue to Brookmill Park and on to where NR21 meets Cycleway 10 (was Quietway 1). Next follow CW10 through Deptford via Folkestone Gardens to the Millwall Ground. Take the path to Oldfield Grove (NR 425) and continue with this route to Greenland Dock. From there go past Tesco to Deal Porter Square. Easy 1.5 – 2 hour ride with lots of off road path. Map at https://goo.gl/4DQ9Tb. Remember to bring Oyster or Contactless card (fare £1.60) and face mask. Can also join ride at Sydenham Overground Station at 10.30am; please indicate on Eventbrite if you intend to do this.  NOTE this is Sydenham Station\, not Lower Sydenham or Sydenham Hill. \nLink to all SC events: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/southwark-cyclists-29281383873.

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclists volunteer will be holding the speed gun in East Dulwich Grove — giving drivers a little surprise when they tear out of the traffic lights. \nFortunately the speedgun holders are protected by the long arm of the law in the form of PCSO Kevin Phillips and he in turn benefits from evidence that the community cares about speeding and wants to control it. It’s a win-win situation. The December schedule is below. If anything catches your eye contact Kevin on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and volunteer. If you have other times and places to suggest\, Kevin is very open to offers. His picture is above. SUMMARY:Burgess Park to Wandsworth and Putney - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Please Note: you must register with Eventbrite to allow us to limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/burgess-park-to-wandsworth-and-putney-southwark-cyclists-healthy-ride-tickets-195799009107. \nStart/Finish Burgess Park (Fuorvito Cafe\, Chumleigh Gardens\, Off Albany Rd. SE5 0RJ). Idea is to explore a bit further west on the south side of the river. Burgess Park is on the west edge of Southwark\, so the obvious place to start. Outward route will go via Vauxhall and Battersea Power Station to Battersea Park. Then round the park and on to the nice paths along the Battersea and Wandsworth riverside\, eventually reaching Wandsworth Park. Will then go a further ½ km and have a look at the rowers on the Putney Embankment. Coffee break in Wandsworth Park during return\, but sadly no time for a round on the well-maintained Crazy Golf Course. Return route has great contrasts. Back along the river to the bridge over Bell Lane Creek\, the mouth of the River Wandle. Then head south into Wandsworth town centre along shared use pavement and across cycle crossings to avoid the traffic on the 1-way system. Next King George’s Park with a nice path by the Wandle. At the south end of the park\, turn left and start heading home via Wandsworth and Clapham Commons. Fairly flat route\, 28km\, a lot of park and riverside is traffic free. SUMMARY:Southwark Flood Risk Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Note you must register on Eventbrite at <  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/southwark-flood-risk-cycle-ride-tickets-195796381247  >. \nMaybe appropriately\, last time we tried this ride there was very heavy rain and this vastly reduced numbers.  Hoping for less precipitation we are trying again. Start/finish in Peckham Square\, next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre. 10am start. Simon S. in his role as Climate Safe Streets champion for Southwark Cyclists has planned this ride to highlight the risk of flooding in London\, something that will increase with global warming. Route will go between the river and the projected 2030 flood line.  Route passes many points of interest including Stompie the tank\, Del boy’s Reliant Robin\, some WWII stretchers\, Iliffe Yard artisan workshops and Royal Surrey Zoological Gardens (Pasley Park).  Will be about 10miles\, 2.5 hours which gives us time for a coffee stop at the Little Cat Café in Myatt’s Field Park.  Will as usual ride as much as possible on quiet streets and paths. \nWe will keep everyone as safe as possible by observing all the Covid Regulations. Even with the relaxation of the rules it is still a good idea to routinely keep a 2m social distance\, never less than 1m. Particularly important to maintain social distancing from other users on shared paths.  Consider bringing a face mask\, can be useful.  Obviously please do not turn up to this event if you are displaying symptoms of Covid-19.

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist volunteer\, Werner\, will be wielding the speed gun this evening on Southwark Bridge Road. He’s a dedicated speeder-catcher and currently tops the board for numbers of taxis caught in one session. Admittedly he hangs out in SE1 (principally) where the black cabs hang out too so he has an advantage on the rest of us. Top speed caught on speedgun so far (any vehicle- type eligible) is 66 mph. There aren’t any prizes and anyone can join in. Email PCSO Kevin Phillips (pictured) at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and tell him you want to volunteer. He’ll encourage you. SUMMARY:Three Prisons and a Ferryman’s Seat - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Note you must register on Eventbrite at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/three-prisons-and-a-ferrymans-seat-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-204986579377. This is to allow us to limit numbers as we post information to several locations. \nLearn some local history on a great 2 hour\, 9 mile\, flat ride with Bruce leading. Starts along Surrey Canal path to Burgess park\, then via Bagshot Street to the New Kent Road. Stops at Newington Gardens (Location of Horsemonger Lane Goal)\, Angel Place (Location of Marshalsea Prison)\, Bear Gardens (Location of the Ferryman’s Seat) and Scovell Road (Location of Kings Bench Prison). Return via Quietway 1 (Q1)\, Coopers Rd and the Canal Path again. As usual keeping to quiet roads\, almost entirely\, plus some nice path at the start/finish. Just a tiny bit of busier road. This excellent themed ride was done in 2017 and 18 led by Harry Clark\, who wrote a quite detailed information sheet\, available with the ride reports and photos at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/three-prisons-and-a-ferrymans-seat-healthy-ride-sept-23rd-2017/. SUMMARY:Annual General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please register on Eventbrite if you plan to attend. Having an idea of the numbers helps with planning. However\, registration is not compulsory – last minute arrivals will be welcome. If you’d like to attend via Zoom\, contact us at Southwark@lcc.org.uk for details. Let’s see if we can make that work. \nNothing to do after that but to come along and vote.  Co-ordinator Jakub Mamczak is quitting (moving out of the borough) after a torrid year when Covid put a stop to everything. He will be hard to replace but needs must. \nApart from elections\, we will be taking a look back at the year\, presenting group reports\, and following this with light refreshments. 7pm\, 2nd Wednesday November 10th at The Bridge\, https://www.thebridge-uk.org. \nThe Bridge is a fitness charity/community cafe on the corner of Southwark Street and Southwark Bridge Road. That’s about five minutes walk from London Bridge Station and even quicker if you cycle (obvs). We used it for a talk by the Cycling Commissioner a while back. Business first and then light refreshments (usually pizza but that’s pretty nice) \nWith the trolley in charge\, almost anything Covid-related could happen between now and then. So booking a Zoom place could be a good idea. Don’t turn up if you are ill / lateral flow tests are available and you could consider doing one before coming / social distancing / hand sanitiser. Ditto masks are good but some people can’t wear one for non-obvious reasons.

DESCRIPTION:Note you must register on Eventbrite at:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/greenwich-trinity-buoy-wharf-barrier-park-cycle-ride-tickets-201191438007 \nFascinating ride through river and dock side East London with Amanda leading. DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer will be helping police with their enquiries this morning with a particular emphasis on speed and other anti-social behaviours relating to motor cars. SUMMARY:Cutty Sark to Beckenham Place Park - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE you must register on Eventbrite to meet Covid Regs\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-beckenham-place-park-healthy-cycle-ride-tickets-197251212687 \nApprox. 3 hours. 14 miles\, so nice easy pace.  Bill leading. Out and back ride using lots of National Route 21\, including the Waterlink Way\, from Deptford to Bell Green.  This is one of the nicest routes in London\, nearly all off road and flat. The Mansion at Beckenham Place Park is impressive.  The improvements to the Homestead include a new Café\, so we will have a coffee break there. \nWe will keep everyone as safe as possible by observing all the Covid Regulations. Most importantly we will be maintaining routinely a 2m social distance\, never less than 1m. Particularly important to maintain social distancing from other users on shared paths.  Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users can maintain 1-2 m and feel safe. Just in case we need them\, good idea to bring a face mask.  Obviously please do not turn up to this event if you are displaying symptoms of Covid-19.

SUMMARY:Dulwich to Vauxhall Bridge - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dulwich-to-vauxhall-bridge-cycle-ride-tickets-190307493837\n \nA flat route from Dulwich – yes indeed. Starting from Dulwich Park Café\, quiet streets to Brockwell Park\, exit on to Brixton Water Lane\, then take Effra Road to Brixton Central.  Road takes its name from the River Effra whose valley we will follow. R. Effra not visible as it was buried in a sewer by Bazalgette in the mid-1860s.  Long run down Brixton Rd to the Oval\, bit boring but gets you there. On to CS5 at the Oval and followed this short segregated path to Vauxhall Bridge.  You used to be able to see the exit of the Effra into the Thames just upstream\, but the Tideway Tunnel people have built lots of stuff concealing this.  Apparently it is not where the Effra mostly entered the Thames anyway – find out more here (http://vauxhallhistory.org/river-effra-jon-newman/).  Short stop on Vauxhall Bridge then if time a circuit of the new American embassy with its moat and defensive rampart and a look at the Sky Pool.  Back to CS5 and into Kennington Park\, followed by back streets to Myatts Fields.  Then Elim Open Space\, across Coldharbour Lane at Cambria Rd\, and along Milkwood road to Herne Hill.  Finally Burbage Rd\, past the Velodrome (maybe pop in if we have time) to Dulwich Village and the Park.  Overall a mixture of quiet and busy streets\, some cycle lane. Care needed at Brixton central\, but we have done this ride several times without problems.  Bruce leading. Route at http://tinyurl.com/y7ul6r9r

Ride will stop in Granary Square with time for a coffee break and a bit of a look round. Outward route down Canal Path to Cycleway 10 (Q1). Ride this to Blackfriars Rd\, then switch to Cycleway 6. This goes over Blackfriars Bridge and up Farringdon Rd before branching off through quiet back streets and over safe crossings to Kings Cross.  Return leg will take a more easterly route\, probably via Spitalfields and London Bridge. Not quite settled yet as Amanda\, who is leading\, is still finding the optimal return route.  Flat route with lots to see\, come and join us.

You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/canada-water-to-the-mound-healthy-cycle-ride-tickets-170455797880 \nStart/finish Canada Water (Deal Porter Square\, opposite CW Station\, SE16 7AR). Start 9.30 (NOTE earlier time than usual)\, aim to finish 12.30 to 1pm (so just right for joining Southwark Cyclists  Picnic). \nWe have all seen the pictures and the media ridicule. But us the Mound really that silly – or is it just reporters being horrid to Westminster Council (unlikely?).  Here is your chance to decide for yourself. The Mound is free at the moment. Ride Leader Philippa did this ride with another group – see photos at https://www.facebook.com/philippa.goffe. So come and join one of our usual easy-paced Southwark Cyclists Healthy Rides.  Route will be CW to London Bridge\, LB to Cannon Street\, St Paul’s\, down to Embankment Cycleway\, Parliament Square\, Constitution Hill (Green Park)\, Hyde Park to the Mound. Back via Westminster Bridge and Waterloo onto Thames path (NCN 4) then head to Cycleway 10 most of the way to Canada Water. Last stretch is through Southwark Park\, so will end ride there for those joining the SC Picnic.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer will be holding the speedgun and PCSO Kevin Phillips (see pic) will be writing down the car numbers\, colours and makes. He sends the details\, by now including names and addresses\, to TfL. At this stage it’s TfL who send out deploring letters to the speeding drivers pointing out the error of the ways\, and that the next deploring post will come from the Met. Most pedestrians (and all cyclists) are supportive. Drivers not so much. \nThe idea is that the volunteer shows that the community cares about speed and the policeman protects the volunteer from abuse. To a surprising extent the abuse switches to the man in police uniform. Van drivers in particular seem convinced that the format is illegal and shout threats to complain. It isn’t and they don’t. \nAll in all\, it’s quite good fun and an interesting take on the war on the motorist. You can join in. Email kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be delighted to hear from you and will investigate locations you suggest. There are weekend and evening sessions to fit any schedule. Enjoy.

SUMMARY:Canada Water to Tate Modern and St Pauls - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/four-bridges-ride-st-pauls-and-tate-modern-healthy-cycle-ride-tickets-169660411859. This is to allow us to limit numbers. We post these rides in several places\, so need one registration point.\nUsual easy-paced ride on mostly quiet steets or paths. Good for gaining confidence and learning routes. 2 hour\,10 mile\, ride from start/finish location next to Canada Water Library and opposite the station. Convenient if you want to come on the Overground as CW Station is step free.\nThis is our 4 bridges ride. . Start along the riverside route\, north over Tower Bridge and along Cycleway C3 to Southwark Bridge. Then south over the bridge and turn right onto Sumner St to the Tate. Cross Milennium Bridge on foot – required – to St Pauls. Then backstreet route to Blackfriars bridge crossing south onto C6 and back to Canada Water via Q1 (now Cycleway 10). Everyone welcome. Route at http://bit.ly/39F1pET\nWe will keep everyone as safe as possible by observing all the Covid Regulations. We are limiting riders to 15 including leader and assistant to reduce risk of spreading the virus. Still important that we maintain routinely a 2m social distance\, never less than 1m. Particularly important to maintain social distancing from other users on shared paths. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users can maintain 1-2 m and feel safe. Just in case we need them\, good idea to bring a face mask. Obviously please do not turn up to this event if you are displaying symptoms of Covid-19.\nMore info about Healthy Rides at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/
