SUMMARY:All the Thames Bridges - Healthy Ride ++
DESCRIPTION:All the Thames Bridges Ride  \nPlease register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/all-the-thames-bridges-bike-ride-tickets-1366417524599?aff=oddtdtcreator \nWerner has planned this new challenge and will lead it on the 26th May. London has 20 Thames bridges open for cyclists between Tower Bridge and Hampton Court Bridge. On this ride we’ll cross them all and even leave Greater London and stray into Surrey. After 55km (33 miles) we’ll turn around at Hampton Court station for a shorter (35km\, 21 mile) ride back to the start over far fewer bridges. Help\, you are thinking\, that is over 50 miles! Well\, we will go slowly\, allowing 5 hours for the bridges and 3 hours for the return (Google says you can do Hampton Court to Waterloo in 1h 20min by bike). 9am start at the Needle\, south side of London Bridge\, 2pm at Hampton Court Bridge\, 5pm back at London Bridge. A first stop at Bishops Park\, Fulham. Several more as the ride develops.  If you do not fancy the return\, there are trains from Hampton Court Station every 30 min. There are also plenty stations close to the route most of the way if needed. \nPrepare well. Give bike a thorough check. Pay particular attention to tyres – side walls all OK\, plenty tread\, plenty pressure? Pack a spare inner tube\, a multitool. Bring water\, snacks\, money or sandwiches for lunch\, travel card just in case. \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.  These rides ares part of a regular programme of Saturday rides\, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/. \n; \n

The large power station buildings have been preserved for these three. The uses of the sites are now very different – an art gallery\, largely residential and a mixed residential and retail/leisure development.  Chance to compare the different fates of these landmark sites and consider if they are now contributing as much as when they kept the lights on and the tube system running. \nRide starts 10am from Burgess Park (Stomping Grounds Café\, Chumleigh Gdns). Back streets/Cyclway to Tate Modern followed by a long ride to Lots Road via the Imperial War Museum\, Vauxhall Bridge and the embankment. From Lots Rd\, across Albert Bridge and through Battersea Park (probable refreshment break) to Battersea Power Station. Then back to Burgess Park via Thessaly Rd\, Larkfield Park and quiet streets across Stockwell.  21km\, 13 miles\, flat. Should be back around 1pm allowing for look around time at each power station. Two of the most amazing were Brixton Mill and Ebony Horse Club. In the middle of houses and next to a prison\, a fully functioning windmill. In a small park near Loughborough Junction\, a riding stables with people circulating on horses. These 2 locations have been incorporated into this gentle 9½ mile circuit along with several parks and a common. Start will be Dulwich Park Café (Clock Café\, middle of the park) at 10am. Back at 12.30pm. Route up Greendale\, Ruskin Park\, Wyck Gardens (Ebony Horse Club)\, Clapham Common\, Blenheim Gardens Estate (Brixton Windmill)\, Brockwell Park\, Belair Park and back to Dulwich Park. Provisional route https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1g6TJbpUw9xeGTnDCSaaCw6CxoTBxxb0&usp=sharing.  Bruce leading. A ride pretty much anyone could do on any kind of bike. Following his successful Essex Ramble last month (https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2025/ride-reports-3rd-may-2025/) he has devised another. We are heading to Epping Forest this time. A 27km (16 miles) circuit from Chingford to Epping and back. Farthest point on the ride will be at Epping Signalling Museum. Coffee stop will be at High Beech. Other places of interest we will stop at will be Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge and Connaught Water. The ride will start at 9.30am at Chingford Station and will finish at approximately 1.30pm back at Chingford Station.  We are mostly off road – 70% on gravel\, 5% on grass. Just 25% on tarmac (paths and road). We think a Brompton would be OK. However NOT a road bike with slim wheels\, need hybrid size tyres with plenty grip.  Sections of the route are “undulating” and overall it will be a challenging ride\, A reasonable level of fitness will be needed.  GPX file of route at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/route-for-epping-forest-ramble/ \nGetting to Chingford from Central London. Obvious option is Overground (Weaver Line) from Liverpool St. 27 min ride\, trains every 15 min\, fare £3.60.

SUMMARY:Upminster to Southend Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Upminster to Southend Healthy Ride\nNOTE. Please register for the ride on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/upminster-to-southend-cycle-ride-tickets-1526787856579?aff=oddtdtcreator \nThe ride starts at Upminster library at 9.30am. We head East into the Essex countryside. Our first stop at 11 miles is Langdon Discovery Centre (Essex Wildlife Trust).  Our second stop at 20 miles is at Hadley Park café.  At 25.5 miles is Southend seafront our destination and our lunch break.  Aim to be at Southend by 12.30. Give ourselves an hour for lunch and set off back at 1.30. Those that want to leave the ride at this point can catch the c2c train from Southend Central back to London. Trains run every 20 minutes.  The journey back traces much of the route outbound but we will have only one stop roughly half way at the Langdon Discovery Centre. We’ll then return to Upminster library after a short break aiming to arrive there about 4.30. \nUpminster station is step free. In Zone 6\, longish journey on District line (e.g. Monument\, 42min\, £3.70). Bit quicker on c2c from Fenchurch St\, 22min\, £3.80). Upminster Library is 400m south of the station\, mostly along busy Station Road.  GPX route map:.Upminster_to_Southend_3 \nPersonal memories of Southend from Ride Leader Owen \nI remember as a 9 year old boy\, a recent immigrant from Hong Kong with virtually no English\, being woken up in the middle of a cold winter’s night to go fishing. After wiping the sleep from my eyes I joined my father and our compassionate elderly neighbour\, a keen fisherman\, to drive down to Southend to fish off the end of the pier.  Still in pitch darkness we dropped lines with about half a dozen hooks on each line into the water. When the tide came in we pulled in our lines and there were two\, three\, four flat fish on each line. \nFish were plentiful in those days and the town was a major holiday destination. Southend today may not glisten the way it used to but on sunny summer weekends thousands of day trippers still pack the promenades. You hear Chubby Chequer being belted out from arcades along with the ping\, ping\, ping sound of pinball machines and the occasional crashing of coins as a lucky punter registers a winning line on the fruit machine. You hear choruses of screaming from those on fairground rides. Every kid seems to be holding a candy floss or an ice cream cone and every adult has a big grin on their face.  Best of all is the ubiquitous seductive aroma of fish and chips with lashings of malt vinegar and pickled onions wafting along the seafront.\nSouthend seafront is still an amazing place to visit. Southend still touches my heart.\nWhat are your memories of Southend? Better still join me on my bike ride from Upminster to Southend and back. \nGeneral Information.   \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Southwark Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
