DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/salter-centenary-ride-tickets-362584729687 \nShort ride around Bermondsey to sites associated with Ada and Alfred Salter.  2022 marks 100 years since Dr Alfred Salter was first elected as MP for Bermondsey and his wife Ada was elected as Bermondsey’s Mayor. A Salter Centenary Project has been organised by local people and this ride is being planned in conjunction with them.  Both Ada and Alfred cycled\, making this ride a particularly appropriate part of the centenary celebrations. \nStart/finish in Deal Porter Square\, opposite Canada Water Station and next to Canada Water Library. We will visit 9 locations including the Salter Statues on Bermondsey Wall E.\, Wilson Grove\, Bermondsey Town Hall and the Ada Salter Garden in Southwark Park.  Ride Leader will be Bruce Lynn (Southwark Cyclists) and brief background descriptions will be provided by Sheila Taylor. SUMMARY:Healthy Ride. Canada Water-South Bank-Deptford-Canada Water Loop
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/canada-water-to-south-bank-cycle-ride-tickets-365871721167\n \nBruce leading an easy ride that uses the Cycleways across north Southwark. Start/finish in Deal Porter Square\, next to Canada Water Library and opposite the station.  Begin by picking up Cycleway 14 on the Albion Channel close to Canada Water. Follow C14 past the Brunel Museum and the Salter Statues to Jamaica Rd. Small section of C4 and a cycle crossing to Tanner St. Continue on C14 past Guys Hospital and through Flat Iron Square to Blackfriars Rd. Leave C14 here and head north on C6 to Upper Ground and follow this to the South Bank. Possible coffee break there. Continue along Upper Ground and join C10 (Quietway 1) at Cornwall Rd. Route heads back on C10 past the Old Vic\, continue through Trinity Square\, past Crol Café on Dunton Rd\, over the Connect 2 Sustrans Bridge\, past Millwall Stadium\, through Folkstone Gardens\, eventually to Deptford High St. Probably turn there and head for the river and pick up National Route 4\, the Thameside route\, back to Canada Water.  This becomes C14 at South Dock and continues through Russia Woodland to the Albion Channel where we first joined it.  Aimed at newish cyclists to show the E-W routes in the north of the borough.  But plenty of interest for experienced cyclists.  11 miles. Route at https://bit.ly/30lzAza.

DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/greenwich-to-lesnes-abbey-cycle-ride-tickets-365866666047   \nStart/finish Cutty Sark\, next to the tunnel entrance. Note the slightly earlier 9.30 start. Amanda leading. 20 mile route largely follows the river\, keeping to the south side. Outward takes the Thames path round the Greenwich peninsula and continuing to Woolwich and Thamesmead. After an ascent of the famous Thamesmead Tor\, heads inland on mostly paths to Lesnes Abbey and a well-deserved coffee break and a quick look at the ruins of the Abbey. On the return use more of the linear\, elevated\, Ridgeway path to Woolwich\, then Thames path again until the Ecology Park at N Greenwich. Cut across the peninsula to save your legs and finish along a short stretch of Thames path to Cutty Sark. High proportion of this route is on off-road paths. Loads to see\, including riding past the O2\, Thames Barrier and the steel men (“Assembly” by Peter Burke) at Woolwich Arsenal.

SUMMARY:Great Trees - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/great-trees-cycle-ride-tickets-334786083187. \nA ride to look at some trees. Boring. Maybe – but trees\, we are realizing\, are not just a taken-for-granted background. They matter. They soak up CO2 and are good for our health.  Inspiration comes from a talk in March 2021 to Better Streets Southwark by Paul Wood about Tree Talk and his amazing Tree Map. Route is based on Paul’s Great Trees of London Map (£8 from book shops).  We did this ride for the first time last year\, see report.  Start is 10am from the Southwark Needle\, south end of London Bridge\, SE1 2PF. Handy for London Bridge Station if you want to get to the start by train.  Route an 11 mile circuit to 6 of the Great Trees plus the palm trees at Chumleigh Gardens in Burgess Park. Route uses a mixture of paths and quiet streets\, just short stretches of busy road. Runs through Camberwell\, Peckham\, New Cross and Deptford.  Should end back at London Bridge at around 12.30 pm. Bruce leading.  Annotated route map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1WMWt1qLR_4_obNGcwNHD3Sghfv22eLEW&usp=sharing

This is a long ride so we are starting at the slightly earlier time of 9.30. Start/finish will be at Greenwich Station\, outside on Greenwich High Rd next to the Novotel (SE10 8JQ). Ride should take 4 hours with a coffee break. So back at approximately 1.30 pm.  From Greenwich will take the DLR across the river to Mudchute. It will be possible to join the ride at Mudchute DLR Station at 9.45. Please indicate on the registration form if you intend to do this. Route incorporates failed social housing (Robin Hood Gardens)\, social housing association (Glenkerry House)\, famous (Balfron Tower\, Barbican) and 2 outstanding public buildings – Salters Hall and Guildhall – at the end. See attached list. Mostly quiet streets\, Including stretches of Q13 and Q1. Some busy junctions where we will use pedestrian crossings. Last stretch back to Greenwich uses Cycleway 10 (Q1). Riders will be able to peel off on this stretch to make their way home. Route map.

SUMMARY:Burgess Park to Wandsworth and Putney - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/burgess-park-to-wandsworth-and-putney-healthy-cycle-ride-tickets-331474708777 \nStart/Finish Burgess Park (Fuorvito Cafe\, Chumleigh Gardens\, Off Albany Rd). Idea is to explore a bit further west on the south side of the river. Outward route will go via Vauxhall and Battersea Power Station to Battersea Park. Then round the park and on to the nice paths along the Battersea and Wandsworth riverside\, eventually reaching Wandsworth Park. Will then go a further ½ km and have a look at the rowers on the Putney Embankment. Coffee break in Wandsworth Park during return\, but sadly no time for a round on the well-maintained Crazy Golf Course. Return route has great contrasts. Back along the river to the bridge over Bell Lane Creek\, the mouth of the River Wandle. Then head south into Wandsworth town centre along shared use pavement and across cycle crossings to avoid the traffic on the 1-way system. Next King George’s Park with a nice path by the Wandle. At the south end of the park\, turn left and start heading home via Wandsworth and Clapham Commons. Fairly flat route\, 28km\, a lot of park and riverside is traffic free. Bruce leading. Route at https://goo.gl/94U3Ve.  Two photos and report on previous ride of this route at https://tinyurl.com/bd2dpyes\, when weather forecast was terrible. Much better for the 7th.

DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/tour-de-rotherhithe-cycle-ride-tickets-322345252327 \nRotherhithe has a remarkable history. This ride takes you on a tour of interesting sites. And because of the excellent planning from the late 1980s there are lots of pedestrian/cycle paths and this ride is nearly completely off-road. A great ride for someone relatively new to cycling.  Start/finish point will be Deal Porter Square\, opposite Canada Water Station\, SE16 7AR. Start time 10am and finish 12 noon. Route is: Southwark Park\, King Stairs Gardens\, then Thames path all the way to Deptford Historic Riverside. Along this stretch will pass the departure point of the Mayflower\, the first underwater tunnel anywhere (by Brunel) and the Surrey Docks Farm. From Deptford will head back via the Surrey Canal Linear Park to South Dock\, Greenland Dock and Russia Woodland. Final stop at Stave Hill to admire the view then loop past surrey Water and along the canal to Canada Water. All this in 10 miles and as a final bonus – this route is entirely without hills! SUMMARY:Climate Safe Streets Cycle Ride for the Election
DESCRIPTION:Local boroughs decide the layout of almost all roads in London. Councillors talk the talk about active transport\, but do they walk the walk (or cycle the cycle)? \nElections are a time to pressure our local politicians to TAKE ACTION. To improve cycling facilities MUCH MORE so that our roads are safer\, our planet less polluted – and we are all healthier. \nThe London Cycling Campaign are organising a programme of action for Climate Safe Streets (https://lcc.org.uk/campaigns/climate-safe-streets/). As part of this the local groups in Southwark\, Lewisham and Greenwich are having a joint ride on Saturday 23rd April. Will be an easy route and marshals will control the busy bits so families can join in. You do not have to be a member of LCC. We want everyone to come along and demonstrate to councillors and candidates that more needs to be done to encourage cycling – to improve road safety and reduce pollution. \nThere are start/finish points in each borough. \n\n\n\nBorough\nLocation of start point \nStart time \nEnd time \n\n\nGreenwich\nCutty Sark Gardens \n \n09:30am \n \n12:30pm\n\n\nLewisham\nFolkestone Gardens\, Trundleys Rd SE8 5JE \n \n10:00am \n \n1:00pm\n\n\nSouthwark\nSouthwark Park Pavilion Cafe \n \n10:30am \n \n1.30pm\n\n\n\n  \nYou do not have to do the whole route. Fine to join us for just a stretch. Or great if you can do the entire route back and forth through all 3 boroughs. Route map. \nDecorate your bike. Make a placard and work out how to carry it on your bike. We want to attract attention! \nPlease register on Eventbrite if you can\, it helps with the planning\, Climate Safe Streets Ride – Greenwich\, Lewisham & Southwark.  However\, not required – it is OK to just turn up. \nP.S Nice LCC video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gufyAgd4qQw

You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycle-ride-through-lambeths-small-open-spaces-tickets-310803480577 \nSmall parks often have a charm of their own. And we are lucky to have lots of them in London. Most have some individual feature of interest. Some have remarkable activities embedded. This flat\, 13 mile route\, includes 12 small parks and also visits 3 larger parks\, 2 of which are close to\, but not in\, Lambeth. A mixture of paths\, quiet streets and some short stretches of busy street. \nRide will start (10am) and finish (1pm) at Waterloo Station. Meet at 10am at the bottom of the steps outside and under the Waterloo Station Victory Arch that is 50 yards up on the right from where York Road meets Cab Rd/Mepham St.  First visit some small parks close to the river\, Archbishop’s Park\, Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens\, Vauxhall Park. Then divert via Nine Elms Station to the Sky Pool and the U.S. Embassy and on through the Power Station developments to Battersea Park.  Across Stockwell via Larkhall Park and on to Wyck Gardens\, Brixton\, home of the Ebony Horse Club\, a Community Riding Centre. Heading back traverse Elam Open space\, Myatts Fields\, Eythorne Park and Kennington Park.  Small diversion to the Beefeater Gin Distillery (sadly no time for a tour) and the Cinema Museum and its neighbour the house in a water tower.  Briefly into Southwark for Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park\, home of the Imperial War Museum\, and finally to Waterloo Millenium Green. Coffee break\, probably in Myatts Fields. Probable route showing all the parks at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1R6fTBvDP_CWqVtzEhbo-kHtOydWA1ne2&usp=sharing

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Werner will be holding the speedgun and pointing it at errant drivers. The fall in cars on the road and the consequent fall in congestion have increased speeds. Whoever could have guessed that wide empty roads would increase dangerous driving!!! \nRoads policing is rising steadily up the political agenda and CSW has got a part to play. Our data makes it harder for the police to ignore the speeding that goes on when they aren’t around. Cameras on cycle helmets make dangerous tail-gating that little less likely to go unobserved and unreported. \nSpeedwatch in Southwark is run by PCSO Kevin Phillips who is affable and keen. To join in email him at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will listen to your views on good locations\, take a look for himself and arrange dates and times suitable for you. Enjoy. It’s good fun

DESCRIPTION:How we police our roads (or don’t) is a political big deal at the moment.  You can help it up the agenda. Speedwatch produces the data which show how much speeding goes on when the police aren’t looking. \nThis report https://www.police-foundation.org.uk/publication/the-future-of-roads-policing/ calls for more emphasis on keeping the roads safe\, It calls for the Home Office to adopt roads policing as a Strategic Policing Requirement\,  advocates adopting Vision Zero with police aiming for zero road deaths and recommends closer collaboration\, including with third sector aka you and me\, us \nTo join in contact PCSO Kevin Phillips@kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He’s an affable\, flexible\, agreeable sort of chap and will cheerfully adjust his ideas to yours. Operating the speedgun is easy\, passers-by overwhelmingly supportive and drivers
