SUMMARY:Healthy Ride to SITC (Sculpture in the City)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycle-ride-to-sitc-sculpture-in-the-city-tickets-394706777597 \nThis ride is an exploration of the outdoor art exhibition in the City of London – Sculpture in the City (https://www.sculptureinthecity.org.uk/)\, starting and finishing at Cutty Sark\, next to the Foot Tunnel. Start time 10am.  Will we like the sculptures or will we just shrug our shoulders? Art enthusiasts may want to download the free Bloomberg Connect guide to the SITC exhibits (https://www.bloombergconnects.org/features/). We can guess which sculpture merits the description “its horizontal configuration opposes veneration and pomposity through its prosaic absurdity”. There will be a competition to come up with your own description of one of the sculptures which sounds most as if it were part of the official guide – the winner will get a free COFFEE & CAKE! This ride will be lead by Eva\, and including a coffee break is likely to take ca 3 hours.

DESCRIPTION:You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/peckham-to-shooters-hill-cycle-ride-tickets-394693217037 \nTypical easy-paced Southwark Cyclists Healthy Ride.  Aim is to get to Severndroog Castle on top of Shooters Hill.  Start time 9.30 (note earlier than usual time). Start/finish Peckham Square (Peckham library\, Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre\, SE15 5RY). Duration 3.5 hours including refreshment break. SUMMARY:Some Theatres in Southwark & Lambeth - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/some-theatres-in-southwark-lambeth-cycle-ride-tickets-383036752237\n \nJane is leading a ride we did once before\, on 29th March 2019 (see report at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-jan-march2019.html) This is a gentle approx. 12½ mile ride with lots of stops\, so should suit the very warm forecast. Start/finish at the Fuorvito Café\, Burgess Park\, 3 Chumleigh St\, London SE5 0RJ. 10 am start\, approx. 12noon finish. Mostly on quiet streets with some stretches of busier road. Will try to post updated list of theatres and an indication of the likely route later in the week. It will not be massively different from last time\, so you can get a good idea from the ride report from 2019 mentioned above. No coffee stop during the ride\, but of course can have one at the finish in the park café. \nUpdate.  Have checked the route and updated the theatres. See iink below. Note that it is likely that this ride will take 2½ hours and finish at 12.30 rather than 12 noon as previously stated. Finish will be at Mountview Academy\, Peckham Square. We will lead a group back to the start location in Burgess Park for anyone going that way. \nLink to theatres list:  Theatres 16.07.22

SUMMARY:Bauhaus Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Start/finish at the Southwark Gateway Needle\, south side of London Bridge. Here is a description of the ride from Ride Leader Eva. This is a circular route from London Bridge to the Isikon Building in Belsize Park\, the most famous Bauhaus building in London. A complex of 36 flats\, it was opened in 1934 and was over time home to an array of famous Bauhaus members including Walter Gropius\, the founding director of Bauhaus. Other famous residents were Agatha Christie and the famous spies Arnold Deutsch and Jürgen Kuczynski. The building includes the Isikon Gallery which showcases aspects of the minimalist flats\, the specially designed furniture as well as information on its famous residents. The Isikon Gallery is free to visit on weekends\, and a visit to this gallery will replace the otherwise usual coffee stop on this ride. The ride will be mainly flat\, ca 20km and to allow time for the visit to the Gallery we expect to return to London Bridge by 12.30 pm. Due to the limited space at the Isikon Gallery we have to set a maximum of 12 riders for this outing. [Note at time of posting\, ride already fully booked\, try Wait List]\n \nRoute map for this 12 mile ride:  https://www.komoot.de/tour/802006144?share_token=aejp4Ync94HI9oEUn5Osmkwp060JGpPxXytoswL2N8LU0xTL50&ref=wtd

DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/greenwich-to-lesnes-abbey-cycle-ride-tickets-365866666047   \nStart/finish Cutty Sark\, next to the tunnel entrance. Note the slightly earlier 9.30 start. Amanda leading. 20 mile route largely follows the river\, keeping to the south side. Outward takes the Thames path round the Greenwich peninsula and continuing to Woolwich and Thamesmead. After an ascent of the famous Thamesmead Tor\, heads inland on mostly paths to Lesnes Abbey and a well-deserved coffee break and a quick look at the ruins of the Abbey. On the return use more of the linear\, elevated\, Ridgeway path to Woolwich\, then Thames path again until the Ecology Park at N Greenwich. Cut across the peninsula to save your legs and finish along a short stretch of Thames path to Cutty Sark. High proportion of this route is on off-road paths. Loads to see\, including riding past the O2\, Thames Barrier and the steel men (“Assembly” by Peter Burke) at Woolwich Arsenal.

DESCRIPTION:Remember you must register on Eventbrite\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/greenwich-to-danson-park-cycle-ride-tickets-354676305377 \n10am to 1.30pm. Start finish at Cutty Sark\, near the tunnel entrance. Eva leading. This is quite a long (18 miles) ride for us with significant short hills (550 feet total climbing). Starts though Greenwich Park then across to cycle paths and quiet streets that parallel the A2\, passing on the way the Well Hall Pleasaunce. Leaves the A2 route at Wendover Way and reaches Danson Park from Danson Lane. Coffee break at the really lovely Fleur de Thé in Danson House. Return uses mostly LCN routes to Woolwich Arsenal via Plumstead Common. There joins the Thames path and follows this back to Cutty Sark.

SUMMARY:Great Trees - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/great-trees-cycle-ride-tickets-334786083187. \nA ride to look at some trees. Boring. Maybe – but trees\, we are realizing\, are not just a taken-for-granted background. They matter. They soak up CO2 and are good for our health.  Inspiration comes from a talk in March 2021 to Better Streets Southwark by Paul Wood about Tree Talk and his amazing Tree Map. Route is based on Paul’s Great Trees of London Map (£8 from book shops).  We did this ride for the first time last year\, see report.  Start is 10am from the Southwark Needle\, south end of London Bridge\, SE1 2PF. Handy for London Bridge Station if you want to get to the start by train.  Route an 11 mile circuit to 6 of the Great Trees plus the palm trees at Chumleigh Gardens in Burgess Park. Route uses a mixture of paths and quiet streets\, just short stretches of busy road. Runs through Camberwell\, Peckham\, New Cross and Deptford.  Should end back at London Bridge at around 12.30 pm. DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brutalist-architecture-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-334798720987 \nFollowing on from the successful Art Deco Architecture ride in April\,  Eva has now designed a ride to buildings in modern Brutalist style. This is a long ride so we are starting at the slightly earlier time of 9.30. Start/finish will be at Greenwich Station\, outside on Greenwich High Rd next to the Novotel (SE10 8JQ). Ride should take 4 hours with a coffee break. So back at approximately 1.30 pm.  From Greenwich will take the DLR across the river to Mudchute. It will be possible to join the ride at Mudchute DLR Station at 9.45. Please indicate on the registration form if you intend to do this. Route incorporates failed social housing (Robin Hood Gardens)\, social housing association (Glenkerry House)\, famous (Balfron Tower\, Barbican) and 2 outstanding public buildings – Salters Hall and Guildhall – at the end. See attached list. Mostly quiet streets\, Including stretches of Q13 and Q1. Some busy junctions where we will use pedestrian crossings. Last stretch back to Greenwich uses Cycleway 10 (Q1). Riders will be able to peel off on this stretch to make their way home. Route map.

You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/burgess-park-to-wandsworth-and-putney-healthy-cycle-ride-tickets-331474708777 \nStart/Finish Burgess Park (Fuorvito Cafe\, Chumleigh Gardens\, Off Albany Rd). Idea is to explore a bit further west on the south side of the river. Outward route will go via Vauxhall and Battersea Power Station to Battersea Park. Then round the park and on to the nice paths along the Battersea and Wandsworth riverside\, eventually reaching Wandsworth Park. Will then go a further ½ km and have a look at the rowers on the Putney Embankment. Coffee break in Wandsworth Park during return\, but sadly no time for a round on the well-maintained Crazy Golf Course. Return route has great contrasts. Back along the river to the bridge over Bell Lane Creek\, the mouth of the River Wandle. Then head south into Wandsworth town centre along shared use pavement and across cycle crossings to avoid the traffic on the 1-way system. Next King George’s Park with a nice path by the Wandle. At the south end of the park\, turn left and start heading home via Wandsworth and Clapham Commons. Fairly flat route\, 28km\, a lot of park and riverside is traffic free. Bruce leading. Route at https://goo.gl/94U3Ve.  Two photos and report on previous ride of this route at https://tinyurl.com/bd2dpyes\, when weather forecast was terrible. Much better for the 7th.

DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/tour-de-rotherhithe-cycle-ride-tickets-322345252327 \nRotherhithe has a remarkable history. This ride takes you on a tour of interesting sites. And because of the excellent planning from the late 1980s there are lots of pedestrian/cycle paths and this ride is nearly completely off-road. A great ride for someone relatively new to cycling.  Start/finish point will be Deal Porter Square\, opposite Canada Water Station\, SE16 7AR. Start time 10am and finish 12 noon. Route is: Southwark Park\, King Stairs Gardens\, then Thames path all the way to Deptford Historic Riverside. Along this stretch will pass the departure point of the Mayflower\, the first underwater tunnel anywhere (by Brunel) and the Surrey Docks Farm. From Deptford will head back via the Surrey Canal Linear Park to South Dock\, Greenland Dock and Russia Woodland. Final stop at Stave Hill to admire the view then loop past surrey Water and along the canal to Canada Water. All this in 10 miles and as a final bonus – this route is entirely without hills! Next along a nice off-road path towards Hackbridge and a short amount on the road before we pick up the Wandle Trail and follow this for 3 miles to Morden Hall. Coffee stop at National Trust Café (usual excellent cakes) then make our way another 1½ miles of Wandle Trail to Merton Abbey Mills. Return on a direct route.  CS7 from Colliers Wood to Tooting\, Balham and Clapham Common\, then mostly quiet streets to Brockwell Park & Dulwich Park. Allowing 4 hours and with 9.30 start expecting to be back a bit before 1.30pm.

SUMMARY:Climate Safe Streets Cycle Ride for the Election
DESCRIPTION:Local boroughs decide the layout of almost all roads in London. Councillors talk the talk about active transport\, but do they walk the walk (or cycle the cycle)? \nElections are a time to pressure our local politicians to TAKE ACTION. To improve cycling facilities MUCH MORE so that our roads are safer\, our planet less polluted – and we are all healthier. \nThe London Cycling Campaign are organising a programme of action for Climate Safe Streets (https://lcc.org.uk/campaigns/climate-safe-streets/). As part of this the local groups in Southwark\, Lewisham and Greenwich are having a joint ride on Saturday 23rd April. Will be an easy route and marshals will control the busy bits so families can join in. You do not have to be a member of LCC. We want everyone to come along and demonstrate to councillors and candidates that more needs to be done to encourage cycling – to improve road safety and reduce pollution. \nThere are start/finish points in each borough. \n\n\n\nBorough\nLocation of start point \nStart time \nEnd time \n\n\nGreenwich\nCutty Sark Gardens \n \n09:30am \n \n12:30pm\n\n\nLewisham\nFolkestone Gardens\, Trundleys Rd SE8 5JE \n \n10:00am \n \n1:00pm\n\n\nSouthwark\nSouthwark Park Pavilion Cafe \n \n10:30am \n \n1.30pm\n\n\n\n  \nYou do not have to do the whole route. Fine to join us for just a stretch. Or great if you can do the entire route back and forth through all 3 boroughs. Route map. \nDecorate your bike. Make a placard and work out how to carry it on your bike. We want to attract attention! \nPlease register on Eventbrite if you can\, it helps with the planning\, Climate Safe Streets Ride – Greenwich\, Lewisham & Southwark.  However\, not required – it is OK to just turn up. \nP.S Nice LCC video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gufyAgd4qQw
