SUMMARY:Wandle Trail - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/full-wandle-trail-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-416836026777\n \nWe only managed half of this ride last month due to the rail strike. This week the strike is off. So we are trying again before the leaves fall and the trail gets slippery. \nThis ride should be a nice challenge: ride the entire Wandle Trail on a Saturday morning starting from the Southwark (Gateway Needle\, London Bridge). In fact we are going to cheat a bit by ending the ride at East Croydon Station. So bring your Travel Pass or equivalent to get home by train.  This ride is Amanda’s idea and she will be leading. Total ride distance is 19 miles and we are planning to finish by 2pm following a 9am start. This should allow time for looking around at some of the interesting parts of the Trail and having a coffee break. Parts of the trail are not surfaced and can be quite uneven\, so difficult on narrow wheels with tyres inflated hard. \nRoute outline. Start Southwark Gateway Needle\, SE side London Bridge\, 9am. From London Bridge take Cycleway 10 to Waterloo.  Over Westminster Bridge and along the cycle lane on the embankment to and over Chelsea Bridge and into Battersea Park. Pick up the Thames Path to the start of the trail where the River Wandle meets the Thames.  Nice stretches include Abbey Water Mill\, Morden Gardens\, White Bridges and Carshalton Ponds.  Useful guide: http://wandlevalleypark.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Wandle-Trail-Map-Print.pdf

SUMMARY:Peckham to Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/peckham-to-vauxhall-pleasure-gardens-cycle-ride-tickets-413760939107 > . \n10am\, Peckham Square (Peckham Library\, Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre). Approx 2.5 hour\, 14 km ride ending back at Peckham Square at 12.30pm. Really easy ride with lots of short breaks as well as a longer coffee break. Ride leader Bruce.  Outward route starts with 2.5km of off road down the Canal Path and across Burgess Park. Then quiet streets and paths to Vauxhall Bridge via Kennington Park\, the Beefeater Gin Distillery and the Pleasure Gardens. Having admired the river\, return to the Pleasure Gardens for a coffee break at the Tea House Theatre.  Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens had their heyday in the Regency period. Concerts were held there\, including the first performance of Handel’s Water Music.  The pleasure gardens also house the Lambeth City Farm.  Return route will include Lambeth Walk\, inspiration for the song of that name in the 1937 musical Me and My Girl (watch this if you don’t know it\, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fgKn3SbCYQ). Last stretch will be across Geraldine Mary Handsworth Park (Imperial War Museum)\, then Elephant and Castle bypass and Cycleway 17 to Burgess Park. If time\, we will make a small detour from Heygate St to have a look at Elephant Park\, the new small park created as part of the E&C redevelopment.  Route at https://bit.ly/3KToaIz

SUMMARY:Boat Race Course Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/boat-race-course-cycle-ride-tickets-405412077437 \nThis ride will be led by Jamie. As Jamie says: “We last did the Boat Race ride on 2nd April when it was unpleasantly cold with a bitter east wind in our faces. One hopes that late August will be more forgiving.” The long range forecast is much better\, 22 degrees\, sunny intervals\, gentle breeze. Here are the detailed instructions.  Note also that this ride does not involve any trains. These have proved very unreliable recently… \nMission To cycle the iconic 4.25 mile Boat Race route from Putney to Chiswick Bridge. \nRoute  Riders should note that this is predominantly a relaxed and social event that involves some enjoyable cycling in stages for about 22 miles in all. 80% of our route is on quieter roads and unsurfaced river paths. This circular route is predominantly flat and thus suitable for all types of bicycles and most rider abilities. There will be loo stops along the route.\nFrom Waterloo Station the ride will follow the river path west to reach the start at Putney embankment. From Putney we will stay on the south side of the river and head to Mortlake before crossing the river by the finish post at Chiswick Bridge. We will then follow the river back down the north river side passing Chiswick Eyot\, Hammersmith Bridge and the Fulham Palace on our return to Waterloo Station which should be approximately 4.30pm. \nCoordinating Instructions and Timings  Riders will meet at 10.00am on Saturday 2nd April at the bottom of the steps outside and under the Waterloo Station Victory Arch that is 50 yards up on the right from where York Road meets Mepham Street and Cab Road just before the road bridge. A Riders safety briefing will be given at 10.00am. \nRations and Water  Our first coffee stop will be at Putney embankment around 11.00 am where we will stop for about 30 minutes. We will stop for lunch around 12.30 at The Ship Inn at Chiswick Bridge south side overlooking the River. Riders are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch/snack should they wish.  Time permitting we will also stop at the stunning Fulham Palace for tea and cakes before returning to Waterloo. \nChecks and Equipment  Riders are urged to pre-check general ABC bike serviceability before the event. A = Air in tyres\,\nB = Brakes\, C= Chain & gears etc. \nCommunications  It is important that all Riders have Jamie Pedrick’s mobile phone number 07976 803741 in their phones in case of any issues on the day. Please feel free to contact me with any queries regarding this event by phone or email on jamie.pedrick@outlook.com

You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/three-prisons-and-a-ferrymans-seat-cycle-ride-tickets-405955181877 \nSouthwark was famous for its prisons in the 18 and 19th centuries. Learn about them and some other local history on a great 2 hour\, 9.5 mile\, flat ride with Bruce leading. Start/finish in Peckham Square (Peckham Library\, Peckham Pulse\, SE15 5RY) \, 10am start\, 12 noon finish. Starts along Surrey Canal path to Burgess Park\, then via Bagshot St to the New Kent Rd. Stops at Newington Gardens (Location of Horsemonger Lane Goal)\, Angel Place (Location of Marshalsea Prison)\, Bear Gardens (Location of the Ferryman’s Seat) and Scovell Rd (Location of Kings Bench Prison). Return via Quietway 1 (Q1)\, Coopers Rd and the Canal Path again. As usual keeping to quiet roads\, almost entirely\, plus some nice path at the start/finish. Just a tiny bit of busier road. This excellent themed ride was first done in 2017 led by Harry Clark and most recently by Bruce in 2021 (see report). Harry wrote a quite detailed information sheet\, attached below. SUMMARY:Healthy Ride to SITC (Sculpture in the City)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycle-ride-to-sitc-sculpture-in-the-city-tickets-394706777597 \nThis ride is an exploration of the outdoor art exhibition in the City of London – Sculpture in the City (https://www.sculptureinthecity.org.uk/)\, starting and finishing at Cutty Sark\, next to the Foot Tunnel. Start time 10am.  Will we like the sculptures or will we just shrug our shoulders? Art enthusiasts may want to download the free Bloomberg Connect guide to the SITC exhibits (https://www.bloombergconnects.org/features/). We can guess which sculpture merits the description “its horizontal configuration opposes veneration and pomposity through its prosaic absurdity”. There will be a competition to come up with your own description of one of the sculptures which sounds most as if it were part of the official guide – the winner will get a free COFFEE & CAKE! This ride will be lead by Eva\, and including a coffee break is likely to take ca 3 hours.

Start/finish at the Fuorvito Café\, Burgess Park\, 3 Chumleigh St\, London SE5 0RJ. 10 am start\, approx. 12noon finish. Mostly on quiet streets with some stretches of busier road. Will try to post updated list of theatres and an indication of the likely route later in the week. No coffee stop during the ride\, but of course can have one at the finish in the park café. \nUpdate.  Have checked the route and updated the theatres. See iink below. Note that it is likely that this ride will take 2½ hours and finish at 12.30 rather than 12 noon as previously stated. Finish will be at Mountview Academy\, Peckham Square. We will lead a group back to the start location in Burgess Park for anyone going that way. \nLink to theatres list:  Theatres 16.07.22

SUMMARY:Bauhaus Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Start/finish at the Southwark Gateway Needle\, south side of London Bridge. Here is a description of the ride from Ride Leader Eva. This is a circular route from London Bridge to the Isikon Building in Belsize Park\, the most famous Bauhaus building in London. A complex of 36 flats\, it was opened in 1934 and was over time home to an array of famous Bauhaus members including Walter Gropius\, the founding director of Bauhaus. Other famous residents were Agatha Christie and the famous spies Arnold Deutsch and Jürgen Kuczynski. The building includes the Isikon Gallery which showcases aspects of the minimalist flats\, the specially designed furniture as well as information on its famous residents. The Isikon Gallery is free to visit on weekends\, and a visit to this gallery will replace the otherwise usual coffee stop on this ride. The ride will be mainly flat\, ca 20km and to allow time for the visit to the Gallery we expect to return to London Bridge by 12.30 pm. Due to the limited space at the Isikon Gallery we have to set a maximum of 12 riders for this outing. [Note at time of posting\, ride already fully booked\, try Wait List]\n \nRoute map for this 12 mile ride:  https://www.komoot.de/tour/802006144?share_token=aejp4Ync94HI9oEUn5Osmkwp060JGpPxXytoswL2N8LU0xTL50&ref=wtd
