SUMMARY:London Bridge to Woolwich - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-bridge-to-woolwich-cycle-ride-tickets-467134260147 \nNOTE early start time of 9.30. \nThe novelty on this ride will be the use of the Elizabeth Line for the outward leg. We will also have our first look at the new segregated cycle lanes on the main road route back from Charlton to Greenwich. Start 9.30 at Southwark Needle (London Bridge) for an estimated 3 hour ride with Bruce leading.  There are 3 stages to the ride. First we will ride to Whitechapel Station. Step free access is from the back entrance on Durward St.  Stage 2 is the Elizabeth Line to Woolwich Arsenal. Bring travel card or equivalent. Stage 3 will be the 9 mile ride back to London Bridge. For this stage will use the Thames path to Anchor and Hope Lane\, then inland to Woolwich Rd where will join the segregated lanes on Woolwich Rd. Continue on the segregated lanes for 2km to Old Woolwich Rd\, Greenwich\, then side streets\, through the Naval College site and bit of Thames path then join Cycleway 4. New segregated lanes to Rainsborough Ave where segregation ends\, on to side streets to Plough Way\, round Greenland Dock and through the Shopping Centre car park to Hothfield place. Short stretch of Lower Rd then the segregated lanes along Jamaica Rd and finally Tooley St back to London Bridge. Short coffee stop during return leg.  Quite a complex ride. Looking for a logistic challenge? This is the ride for you! \nRoute at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1nujZlPNfM3mgdvopajntQ8sR419qtKE&usp=sharing

SUMMARY:London Bridge to Clissold and Finsbury Parks - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-bridge-to-clissold-and-finsbury-parks-cycle-ride-tickets-462666486917.\n \nRecent ride to Alexandra Palace went through these 2 parks. I realised they were worth a ride in themselves where we could explore a bit more. Start Southwark Needle on south side of London Bridge. 10am. 13 mile ride so with coffee break about 3 hours. Start heading north through the City\, past Barbican and Bunhill Fields\, across City Road at the Eagle (Pop goes the weasel)\, back streets to Canonbury and first sight of the New River. This artificial river has been supplying water to London since 1614 (yes over 400 years) and will be popping up regularly on the ride. Zigzag through Clissold Park spotting the animal enclosure and the Mansion. Then Woodberry Wetlands\, around reservoirs filled from the New River. More side streets to Finsbury Park where will do a circuit noting the stretch of the New River and the boating Lake. Back to the west end of the Wetlands and a brief stop at The Castle. This amazing building really does look like a castle\, but was actually a Victorian pumping station to increase supply from the New River. It is now an impressive indoor climbing centre. Return continues past the Emirates Stadium\, New River Head (no river any more)\, C6 and the embankment (C3). Bruce leading. DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lord-mayors-show-cycle-ride-tickets-462661552157 \nSecond Saturday in November is date for the annual Lord Mayors Show. A procession of bands\, floats and carriages around the streets of the City. The streets are cleared of traffic. There is narrow window mid-morning when\, expertly led by Werner\, we have been able to enjoy these empty streets. SUMMARY:Gunpowder Plot Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/gunpowder-plot-cycle-ride-tickets-456115091517.  Note at time of posting\, 3/11/22\, this ride is full. Still space on the Thamesmead Tor ride. \nThis ride\, starting 10 am from Peckham (Peckham Square\, next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre) will follow the events of the Gunpowder Plot in chronological order. We will start on the Strand where the plotters\, led by Robert Catesby\, met in the Duck and Drake to organise their dreadful deed.  Sadly the splendidly named D and D no longer exists so we will instead ride past a few old pubs in the Strand area. Next the gunpowder had to be stored. For this the plotters moved south of the river to a house owned by Catesby in Fore St. Fore St also no longer exists but is where we now have the Albert Embankment. This is conveniently opposite parliament and was on the waterfront. Nice and handy for rowing across to parliament at night with a few barrels of gunpowder.  Next back across to parliament. The exact building that was to be blown up\, the then House of Lords\, yet again no longer exists. However Westminster Hall where the surviving plotters were put on trial is still there. We can also visit Old Palace Yard where the plotters were hung\, drawn and quartered. Finally\, slightly out of sequence\, we will head to the Tower. Here Guy Fawkes was tortured to reveal the names of the other plotters. He held out for 2 days!  The history ends here and we finish with a peaceable ride back to Peckham for 12.30 to 1pm. Bruce leading.  Probable route at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1lphp8TMWxDrojm-hSnsgFy7b1JWLLHI&usp=sharing

Over 40 large artistic globes have appeared across London. These are part of an education programme to improve our understanding of UK history\, particularly with respect to the slave trade. More info at https://www.theworldreimagined.org/globes/.  The globes are fun to look at and several rides\, including a postscript to one of last week’s Healthy Rides (see link to report above)\, have toured some of them. Philippa’s route will be a combo of the Lambeth and Southwark trail with some of the City trail\, so about 15 globes in all.

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride\, Peckham Rye Park - Forest Hill - Waterlink Way
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/peckham-rye-park-forest-hill-waterlink-way-cycle-ride-tickets-422159840447\n \nStart 10am at Peckham Rye Park Café (The Round\, Straker’s Rd.\, SE15 3UA). Bruce leading.  We have not started a ride from this location\, but many will know it as we start the led rides to Freecycle from there. It is easy to reach from Peckham and Dulwich (10 min ride from Peckham Square or Dulwich Village).  Why are we riding up Forest Hill? For the usual reason – it is there. Forms northern high point of a ridge that runs for 8km from Telegraph Hill and Hilly Fields in the NE to Grangewood Park\, near Thornton Health\, at the SW end. Forest Hill is not very scenic. Covered in housing and only limited views (but there are some). At 100m it is a nice challenge. Having done a hilly bit need to average things out by doing a flat section. None better than the Waterlink Way. We will ride 3km of this excellent off road route.  The total ride is short\, 8 miles\, so we can take it easy on the uphills\, walking if necessary.  An easy ride suitable for even quite inexperienced cyclists. Everyone welcome. Details of the proposed route at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=19Fnwgmcupm7p1uCnAkQse67gA_p71Ng&usp=sharing.

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride to Bermondsey Street Festival
DESCRIPTION:Attention. Bermondsey Street Festival has been cancelled due to Queen’s death. We will ride more or less the same route with the same start and finish times. Instead of spending time at Bermondsey St we will but spend time exploring Bermondsey\, visiting historic and contemporary sites of interest. Plan is to pass Guys Hospital\, then the Leathermarket buildings. Explore Bermondsey St (Glassblowing Centre\, Fashion and Fabric Museum\, White Cube Gallery). At top end stop at St Mary Magdalen Church\, site of the 11th century Bermondsey Abbey. Then on to Bermondsey Square\, Spa Road Station (first rail terminus in London\, long disused) and the Biscuit Factory. Back to Canada Water via Southwark Park. Link below should still be used for registration. \nNOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycle-ride-to-bermondsey-street-festival-tickets-416839958537\n \nStart 10am at Canada Water Library (Deal Porter Square\, opposite Canada Water Station\, SE16 7AR). Bruce leading.  Planning an easy-paced\, 8 mile\, 2 hour\, ride to the Bermondsey Street Festival (Festival details at https://bermondseystreetfestival.org.uk)  \nAn outward route with lots to see. Down the Albion Channel to the Thames. West along the Thames path to Tower Bridge. Cross Tower Bridge then use pedestrian crossing to get to the slip road down to St Katherines Dock. Over the Red Bridge and through to the Hermitage Riverside Memorial Garden and on to Ivory Dock. North to Royal Mint St and Cycleway 3.  West to Tower Hill and via Cycleway 5 to The Monument. Across London Bridge and along Tooley St to Bermondsey St.  Have a 20 min stop there to look at some of the Festival activities. Option to stay at the Festival if you want.\nFollowing break at the Festival\, for those wishing to continue\, will get back to Canada Water using the Cycleway 14 route mostly along or close to the Thames.  Did this ride in 2019\, Sept 14th\, see report at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-august-sept-2019.html.  Route at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=14S-g8PxDUw0uTGKtGc29wMu_Mu35DbeQ&usp=sharing

SUMMARY:Wandle Trail - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/full-wandle-trail-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-416836026777\n \nWe only managed half of this ride last month due to the rail strike. This week the strike is off. So we are trying again before the leaves fall and the trail gets slippery. \nThis ride should be a nice challenge: ride the entire Wandle Trail on a Saturday morning starting from the Southwark (Gateway Needle\, London Bridge). In fact we are going to cheat a bit by ending the ride at East Croydon Station. So bring your Travel Pass or equivalent to get home by train.  This ride is Amanda’s idea and she will be leading. Total ride distance is 19 miles and we are planning to finish by 2pm following a 9am start. This should allow time for looking around at some of the interesting parts of the Trail and having a coffee break. Parts of the trail are not surfaced and can be quite uneven\, so difficult on narrow wheels with tyres inflated hard. \nRoute outline. Start Southwark Gateway Needle\, SE side London Bridge\, 9am. From London Bridge take Cycleway 10 to Waterloo.  Over Westminster Bridge and along the cycle lane on the embankment to and over Chelsea Bridge and into Battersea Park. Pick up the Thames Path to the start of the trail where the River Wandle meets the Thames.  Nice stretches include Abbey Water Mill\, Morden Gardens\, White Bridges and Carshalton Ponds.  Useful guide: http://wandlevalleypark.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Wandle-Trail-Map-Print.pdf

SUMMARY:Boat Race Course Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/boat-race-course-cycle-ride-tickets-405412077437 \nThis ride will be led by Jamie. As Jamie says: “We last did the Boat Race ride on 2nd April when it was unpleasantly cold with a bitter east wind in our faces. One hopes that late August will be more forgiving.” The long range forecast is much better\, 22 degrees\, sunny intervals\, gentle breeze. Here are the detailed instructions.  Note also that this ride does not involve any trains. These have proved very unreliable recently… \nMission To cycle the iconic 4.25 mile Boat Race route from Putney to Chiswick Bridge. \nRoute  Riders should note that this is predominantly a relaxed and social event that involves some enjoyable cycling in stages for about 22 miles in all. 80% of our route is on quieter roads and unsurfaced river paths. This circular route is predominantly flat and thus suitable for all types of bicycles and most rider abilities. SUMMARY:Three Prisons and a Ferryman’s Seat - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/three-prisons-and-a-ferrymans-seat-cycle-ride-tickets-405955181877 \nSouthwark was famous for its prisons in the 18 and 19th centuries. Learn about them and some other local history on a great 2 hour\, 9.5 mile\, flat ride with Bruce leading. Start/finish in Peckham Square (Peckham Library\, Peckham Pulse\, SE15 5RY) \, 10am start\, 12 noon finish. Starts along Surrey Canal path to Burgess Park\, then via Bagshot St to the New Kent Rd. Stops at Newington Gardens (Location of Horsemonger Lane Goal)\, Angel Place (Location of Marshalsea Prison)\, Bear Gardens (Location of the Ferryman’s Seat) and Scovell Rd (Location of Kings Bench Prison). Return via Quietway 1 (Q1)\, Coopers Rd and the Canal Path again. As usual keeping to quiet roads\, almost entirely\, plus some nice path at the start/finish. Just a tiny bit of busier road. This excellent themed ride was first done in 2017 led by Harry Clark and most recently by Bruce in 2021 (see report). Harry wrote a quite detailed information sheet\, attached below. SUMMARY:Wandle Trail - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:   https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wandle-trail-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-401929019517 \nHere is a nice challenge: ride the entire Wandle Trail on a Saturday morning starting from Southwark (Southwark Needle\, south east side of London Bridge). In fact we are going to cheat bit by ending the ride at East Croydon Station. So bring your Travel Pass or equivalent to get home by train.  This ride is Amanda’s idea and she will be leading. Total ride distance is 19 miles and we are planning to finish by 2pm. Useful guide: http://wandlevalleypark.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Wandle-Trail-Map-Print.pdf \n

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride to SITC (Sculpture in the City)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycle-ride-to-sitc-sculpture-in-the-city-tickets-394706777597 \nThis ride is an exploration of the outdoor art exhibition in the City of London – Sculpture in the City (https://www.sculptureinthecity.org.uk/)\, starting and finishing at Cutty Sark\, next to the Foot Tunnel. Start time 10am.  Will we like the sculptures or will we just shrug our shoulders? Art enthusiasts may want to download the free Bloomberg Connect guide to the SITC exhibits (https://www.bloombergconnects.org/features/). We can guess which sculpture merits the description “its horizontal configuration opposes veneration and pomposity through its prosaic absurdity”. There will be a competition to come up with your own description of one of the sculptures which sounds most as if it were part of the official guide – the winner will get a free COFFEE & CAKE! This ride will be lead by Eva\, and including a coffee break is likely to take ca 3 hours.
