Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/graffiti-and-murals-in-south-london-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-613468218957      If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place (How to cancel). \n10am start from Peckham Square (next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre\, SE15 5RY). Bruce leading and hoping to be back at Peckham Square between 12.30 and 1pm.  Route heads west to the Leake Street (Banksy) Tunnel under Waterloo Station. This is Graffiti Central! If you have never seen it – well it is something else. Then a nice long ride east via the new mural at “The Blue”\, Bermondsey and Folkstone Gardens\, where we will have a brief coffee stop at the Honle (Festa) café. In Deptford will pass more graffiti followed by a couple of interesting murals. Our route will involve getting through the Saturday market on Douglas Way. We may have to walk some of this. Back to Peckham via the History mosaic on the Old Kent Rd. If time will detour up to Copeland Park. This is a new route – should be eye opening. More about the stops on this route on the attached information sheet. Route map at  https://tinyurl.com/k8phpbwe \nShort Murals Ride Information

DESCRIPTION:NOTE. Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/canada-water-to-cody-dock-cycle-ride-tickets-613471107597 . If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place (How to cancel). \n9.30 start (not usual 10am) from Canada Water (Deal Porter Square\, opposite CW Station\, SE16 7AR). Amanda leading a cross river circuit to Cody Dock. Cody Dock is run as a charitable Social Enterprise with the aim of regenerating the dock and surrounding waterways (see https://codydock.org.uk). What has been created is very unique. And it includes a Cafe where we will take a break. We are trying a new route this year using different river crossings. Outward will go to the Cable Car at the O2 via the Thames path\, then Excel Centre and City Airport\, Beckton Park\, Greenway and Three Mills. Return will head for Canary Wharf and catch the short ferry to the Doubletree (Hilton) hotel\, then across Russia Woodland to Canada Water. Riders will need to pay fares on both crossings. So bring Travel Card etc. Cable car full fare is £5\, ferry is £5.20. Aim to be back by 1.30pm.

SUMMARY:BBC Centenary 60K Ride
DESCRIPTION:Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bbc-centenary-60k-cycle-ride-tickets-603174881307 > If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place (How to cancel). \n6-7 hr ride with Werner leading. Stops for coffee and lunch. Bring water or sports drinks and snacks. We expect to do the lunch stop at Ealing where you can buy food. But feel free to bring a packed lunch.  Route will include Ealing Studios\, BBC Park Western\, White City\, Riverside Studios Hammersmith\, Langham Place\, Aldwych and Maida Vale (but not in that order!). Will use some of the quite extensive new cycle track on C9 in Hammersmith (map here\, consultation on improvements ends April 3rd). \nThis is a considerably longer ride than usual. Average speeds will be at our usual modest pace.  But you will need to be able to maintain this for 5-6 hours with only one longish break. Your bike also needs to be ready for the challenge so check it over\, sort out any niggles and bring a spare inner tube.

SUMMARY:Dulwich to Vauxhall - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:< https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dulwich-to-vauxhall-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-603190247267 > . If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place (How to cancel). \nA flat route from Dulwich – yes indeed. Starting from Dulwich Clock Café in Dulwich Park at 10am\, quiet streets to Brockwell Park\, exit on to Brixton Water Lane\, then take Effra Road to Brixton Central.  Road takes its name from the River Effra whose valley we will follow. R. Effra not visible as it was buried in a sewer by Bazalgette in the mid-1860s.  Long run down Brixton Rd to the Oval\, bit boring but gets you there. On to CS5 at the Oval and follow this short segregated path to Vauxhall Bridge.  You used to be able to see the exit of the Effra into the Thames just upstream\, but the Tideway Tunnel people have built lots of stuff concealing this.  Apparently it is not where the Effra mostly entered the Thames anyway – find out more here (http://vauxhallhistory.org/river-effra-jon-newman/).  Short stop on Vauxhall Bridge then start the return past the new American embassy with its moat and defensive rampart. Take a look at the Sky Pool. Then past Nine Elms station\, followed by back streets across Stockwell and on to Herne Hill.  Finally Burbage Rd\, past the Velodrome (maybe pop in if we have time) to Dulwich Village and the Park.  Overall a mixture of quiet and busy streets\, some cycle lane. Care needed at Brixton central\, but we have done this ride several times without problems (report from Oct 2021).  Simon S. leading. Route at http://tinyurl.com/y7ul6r9r

SUMMARY:Ride Leaders Course
DESCRIPTION:Interested in leading social group rides? Maybe helping with our Healthy Rides? Or doing rides for another organisation\, or even just doing your own self-organised rides?  It is useful to learn from others which is why we run free 1-day courses to instruct experienced riders about organising and conducting group rides. \nNext course will be Sunday March 26th\, 10am to 4pm\, based at Dockhead Fire Station.  You do not have to be a member of Southwark Cyclists to join the course. If interested email Bruce Lynn at cyclebuddies@southwarkcyclists.org.uk. \nBut before doing this think about the following: \n\nAm I experienced enough? For example\, several years riding regularly in London (or equivalent city) .\nAm I really OK with being (partly) responsible for the safety of maybe 15 others?\nDo I have the time/energy to actually lead rides?\n\nNote other Ride Leader and Ride Marshal courses will be announced soon by the London Cycling Campaign\,

Jane leading this 13 mile ride. This is a fun ride in which we will see at least 12 London Cats portrayed in stone\, wood\, bronze and gold\, so it’s hypoallergenic – though we may spot Hodge the resident mouser at Southwark Cathedral. Starting in SE1 and The City\, on to Bloomsbury\, up to Mornington Crescent & back via Covent Garden and Strand\, ending at The Little Cat cafe in Myatts Fields. \nSome short stretches on busy roads but mostly on quieter cycle routes. It will be stop/start with pauses (pawses?) for information en route and a coffee stop probably at Russell Square. Note that we are not finishing at the start location\, so make sure you have looked at your route home from Myatts Fields. SUMMARY:London Bridge-Hyde Park Loop - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE 1. Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link< https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-bridge-to-hyde-park-circular-cycle-ride-tickets-555527175737 >. If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place (How to cancel). \nThere has been a decade or more of work to develop safe\, segregated cycle routes in London. What kind of possibilities has it opened up? I set out to look at Central London where most of the new cycleways are. Have stitched together a circular route that gets you around in reasonable comfort and certainly passes some interesting locations. \nStart 10am at London Bridge (next to Needle\, south side\, near Station). Cross and drop down to Cycleway 3\, a well-designed\, segregated route. Follow this along the embankment\, through Parliament Squ\, past Buck house and across Hyde Park. If time a diversion into Kensington Gdns and past the Albert Memorial. Continue over the Serpentine to Lancaster Gate. Abandon C3 here and stay in Hyde Park heading east for the return leg. Exit Hyde Park just before Marble Arch via the cycle crossing to Stanhope Pl\, then back streets (LCN5) to Crawford St where the route becomes Cycleway 27. C27 is a bit of a let-down; no segregation\, no protection at junctions. However it is a (nearly) straight route. At Gower St we leave C27 and use the segregated lanes on Torrington Place eastwards\, these not having a cycleway designation (LCN6). Keeping going east we join a second stretch of well designed route\, Cycleway 6 and turn south to and over Blackfriars Bridge. Last segment is on C14 most of the way to London Bridge. At an easy pace we can ride this loop in 3 hours including a coffee break. Bruce Leading\, 12-13 miles.  Route at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1qkrX4KxPAZfk9xDVDZM5tWq_oaj4kBQ&usp=sharing

If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place (How to cancel). \nJane leading a route we last did in May 2016 (link to report). Burgess Park Cafe (Chumleigh St) to Clapham Common via quiet streets in Camberwell & Stockwell\, crossing some busy junctions with brief sections on main roads. Short stop (photos?) at the Bandstand. On the return journey we will pause to see the concrete reliefs created by Hungarian artist Laszlo Peri on the post war housing estates around Fentiman Road. All part of a campaign to promote public art during post-war redevelopment of the area. The reliefs of “Mother and Children Playing” and “Boys Playing Football” have Grade II listing by Historic England. We will press on to Waterloo Station to see his sculpture of The Sunbathers now restored and on display overlooking the main concourse. This was produced for the Festival of Britain site in 1951. It was subsequently”lost” until being rediscovered in 2016 chucked away in the back garden of the Clarendon Hotel on Blackheath. There was quite a bit of media coverage at the time of the rediscovery.  From Waterloo the ride continues via cycle routes around Elephant & Castle and Walworth Road back to Burgess Park. To fit everything in\, no coffee stop en route\, but we can have a coffee at the end of the ride. 11 miles. Route map at https://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_5431778.html

DESCRIPTION:A repeat of the popular New Year’s Eve ride to view Henry Moore Statues with Jane leading again.  Ride info from Jane who will be leading: \nYour chance to begin 2023 with some improving culture!  This ride follows a route across Vauxhall Bridge and mostly through central London to look at 8 works created by the sculptor Henry Moore. We will return via South Kensington and Chelsea\, visiting “Three Standing Figures” in Battersea Park and ending with a surprise (for some) on the Brandon Estate near Kennington Park. Be prepared for a bit of stop/start riding as we’ll be hearing brief facts about each sculpture and there will be a coffee stop at some point. We should finish by 13h30 and I can direct people back to Southwark destinations from Kennington Park if required. https://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_5148989.html
