SUMMARY:Bike Train to Central London
DESCRIPTION:Come on our famous Bike Train and find\, like previous riders\, that it “changes everything” about getting on your bike to work. Another rider said it’s “very stress-free”.Our route follows the route of the old Surrey Canal of which this mega-park is just a part. This is a canal bridge over the former canal about half way through. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, north along a traffic-calmed backstreet\, onto the pavement-cycling lanes along the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle bypass and then onto the lovely new TfL segregation all the way to Blackfriars. Arrival time approx 8.45am. On time every time. Fun and free. \nFrom there riders are taken on by individual arrangement and we have taken people to Mayfair\, Kings Cross\, Faringdon and Tower Hill. All easy\, legal and free. Return rides arranged individually. \nWe start at 8am from Nunhead Station and pick up riders from Peckham Rye station (from the bike stands behind McDonalds) at 8.10am. We are joined by riders from Denmark Hill who leave that station at 8.10am (from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk) and join the train in Burgess Park. \nTo book your seat at Denmark Hill text Liz Eden on 07814 515 715 or for Peckham or Nunhead contact me on 07842 640 207 — or don’t book anything at all and just turn up. All welcome. Free. \n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike and PCSOs
DESCRIPTION:The good doctor is back again with his enormous bag of tools and his failthful assistants (who use his and bring their own). They will index your gears\, tighten your brakes and give you wise advice on your chain\, tyres and everything else bike-related. Maps\, fighting talk and gossip about cycling in Southwark and beyond also available. \nHe will be under Peckham Arch at the south end of Surrey Canal Path which is the lovely bit of woodland heading down into Peckham. \nPCSOs getting grumpy and expensive about cycling on the pavement at the north end of Rye Lane seem to be there most mornings at the moment. They want people to use the cycle path which goes round the edge instead of going straight on. Always worth keeping an eye open for

SUMMARY:London Festival of Cycling\, Freecycle: Peckham Rye feeder ride 10am
DESCRIPTION:Feeder Ride from Peckham Rye Park Cafe departs 10am \nThis is Britain’s biggest bike festival and last year around 50\,000 riders took part. This celebration of cycling\, the event gives cyclists of all abilities the chance to ride through traffic-free streets in central London. The route will take in the Strand and Lincoln’s Inn Fields and returns to the Victoria Embankment\, taking in a section of the newly opened East-West Cycle Superhighway (CS3). \nThe eight-mile circuit passes iconic London landmarks including Buckingham Palace\, Trafalgar Square\, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England and again goes south of the river with a loop over Waterloo Bridge\, offering stunning views of London. You can stop and start\, take photos and experience the fun and freedom of riding without worrying about cars\, lorries and buses. From Tower Bridge to Buckingham Palace\, London’s greatest sights create an inspiring backdrop for a memorable day of cycling. \nSouthwark Cyclists will be leading an all-age ride up to join the London FreeCycle on July 30th. Our feeder ride departs from the cafe on Peckham Rye Common and there will be a ride back for those who want it at 3pm on the day. To take part just turn up.

SUMMARY:Monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly meeting will be at the new Nunhead Green Community Centre — upstairs in Holly. There’s a lift for those who can’t manage stairs. \nThere’s parking for 6 bikes outside the centre and more in a bike shed behind the centre which is dark and unobserved and accessible over the back wall. There’s more parking around the Green and there’s always been enough so far. \nThe approach from Nunhead Lane involves a not very nice\, not very wide blind bend which the traffic takes too fast\, so the advised approach is via Scylla Road. This route needs some railings removed and some drop kerbs but from an absence of traffic point of view\, it is the best.

SUMMARY:Bike Train runs again
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train runs again — the weather gods are smiling on us. We skip (can trains skip?) between the rain-drops\, lightening bolts and thunder. \nOur route is the usual one; two parks\, one traffic-calmed backstreet\, the pavement-cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the lovely new segregated cycle lanes. Everyone who tries it is converted. \nWe start from Nunhead Station at 8am; pick up at Peckham Rye station at 8.10am and meet a branch line coming in from Denmark Hill Station at 8.20am in Burgess Park. The departure point from Peckham Rye station is the bike stands behind McDonalds (west end of Holly Grove). We arrive at the north end of Blackfriars Bridge at 8.45am. \nFrom there we take riders on individually. So far we have taken people to Kings Cross\, Faringdon\, Mayfair\, Hyde Park and the Tower (not for incarceration). All this is free. Everyone is cheerful and no one fears for their life at any point. \nReturn rides are also arranged individually. Like real trains these are heart-stoppingly expensive. No that’s a joke. These are also cheerfully arranged and free. To join in mail southwark@lcc.org.uk or text me on 07842 640 207 or just turn up.

SUMMARY:European History of Peckham and Camberwell
DESCRIPTION:Bike your way IN to history! \nEver wondered about the names of Calais Road\, De Crespigny Park\, Denmark Hill or Delft Way? Did you know that Camberwell had a thriving German population in the 19th century\, supporting bakeries\, a German church and visiting composers? Or that a community of French Huguenot refugees settled here? Have you spotted the Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Camberwell New Road? Ever bought Cypriot pastries in SE5 or French chocolate in SE15? \n\n\nThis free guided cycle ride will uncover the European history of Camberwell and Peckham. It’s led by Eleanor Margolies\, author of ‘Green Camberwell’. All welcome\, including accompanied children. We will mainly be on quiet roads and will travel at a gentle pace\, with stops for sightseeing and appropriate refreshments. \nBooking: The ride is completely free but it would help us to plan if you book. Please email eleanor.margolies at southwark.greenparty.org.uk to book or with any questions.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to Blackfriars
DESCRIPTION:Want to cycle up to town but worried about getting there safely? Come with us and use our “inside knowledge” (as one pleased rider called it). Our route includes two parks\, a traffic-calmed backstreet\, the New Kent Road pavement bike lanes\, the Elephant and Castle bypass and the lovely new segregation. No need to come anywhere near an HGV or a bus. Main hazards: dogs\, small children\, shopping trolleys and other cyclists. \nWe take riders on individually to Faringdon\, Kings Cross\, Mayfair and Westminster. Return rides by arrangement on the day. \nWe leave Nunhead Station at 8am\, Peckham Rye station (from the bike stands behind McDonalds) at 8.10am and arrive at Blackfriars at 8.45. We are free and reliable (unlike the train) and\, equally unlike the train\, we will wait if we know you are coming. So to book your place\, mail southwark@lcc.org.uk or text me 07842 640 207

SUMMARY:Bike Train Awayday Weekender
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train ride with no work at the other end of it. What’s not to like? \nThe idea is to start from the place the Bike Train starts at Peckham Rye Station\, from the bike stands behind McDonalds. Then to follow the Bike Train route up to town\, do a loop to look at the sights and come home again. \nThe advantage of doing it on a non-working day would be less stress\, quieter roads\, and no feeling of having to get anywhere by a certain time. The pace would be slower\, we could take the kids\, anyone could stop\, drop out or turn round and go home at any point\, less commitment\, less stress. \nWe will do an interesting circle from Blackfriars along the Embankment to Westminster and back via the South Bank Centre so that it’s not just a route but has more context and shows ways to get to more interesting places than work.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike
DESCRIPTION:Dr Bike will be back in his usual spot under Peckham Arch this Thursday May 12th with two top mechanics\, maps\, leaflets and shedloads of (mostly unwanted) advice. \nThe mechanics check brakes\, gears and tyres and fix most things on the spot. If you know you need parts and you bring them they will fit them. Otherwise they will send you off to your local bikes shop (they give advice on that too. \nThe doctor(s) and their assistants will be under the Arch from 5.30-7.30pm. They get easily bored so they are looking for stuff to fix. Do them a favour and let them help you

SUMMARY:Bike Train: NEW Denmark Hill branch
DESCRIPTION:From Wednesday May 11th the Bike Train service is expanding to Denmark Hill station. It will leave Denmark Hill at 8.10 am meeting up with the rest of the carriages in Burgess Park. Timetable will be otherwise unchanged\, leaving Nunhead at 8am and Peckham Rye Station (from the bike stands behind McDonalds) at 8.10am. The same excellent and reliable service will be provided. Great cycling weather is guaranteed. \nThe Bike Train runs to Blackfriars station but there are great onward connections from there to Faringdon\, Kings Cross\, Westminster and Mayfair with riders travelling on to all these destinations who can take fellow travellers along. \nWe are also running a weekend Bike Train over the same route\, probably on May 15th. Whether to run it in the morning or afternoon isn’t yet decided. Obviously this won’t be a Bike Train to work but it will be all the better for that. The idea is see the route\, try it out\, and drink coffee along the way without the added stress of trying to get to work and worrying about being late and covered in oil. \nIf you are interested and you are already in touch about the Bike Train just mail us and say so. Otherwise mail southwark@lcc.org.uk and we’ll be in touch

SUMMARY:Dr Bike Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:Now we’ve started we have to keep going. Last year we didn’t stop until the hour changed back. Those who know what they’re doing check brakes\, tune gears\, pump up tyres and increase your whiz. They also know how to fit new parts but we don’t carry those and if you know you need them\, you have to bring them yourself. \nExpert mechanics\, wise old heads\, maps\, chat\,  what’s not to like. Sadly no coffee\, that’s what. All welcome for bike chat\, bike gossip and local information

SUMMARY:Plus de Dr Bike
DESCRIPTION:Dr Bike hard at work under Peckham Arch\, looking south towards Peckham High Street and Rye Lane. The one in red\, head down\, with no hair is the boss\, Andy Cawdell. \nAndy and others will be fixing bikes for all comers aided by the usual suspects on March 31st. Probably be a bit lighter than the photo suggests because of the hour change. \nTogether they will fix punctures\, brakes and weird gears. They will fit parts if you bring them (or rush off and buy them from the good local bike shops). \nSadly\, no coffee. The workforce never gets time to drink it anyway.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike\, Peckham Arch\, March 17th
DESCRIPTION:Dr Bike returns despite the cold\, dark etc. At least two high grade\, dedicated mechanics will be at your service March 17th 5.30-7.30pm under Peckham Arch. \nThey will fix brakes\, tweak gears and mend punctures. They enjoy doing more complicated stuff (gives them job satisfaction to use all their skills) and will fit new parts if you bring them. \nPeckham Arch is at the south end of Surrey Canal Path (that long thin strip of green) at the gateway to Peckham going south. There should be a map around. \nNo charge\, lots of free advice\, good will\, maps\, cycling info and cheerfulness

SUMMARY:Rotherhithe Healthy RIde
DESCRIPTION:Canada Water to Camberwell Loop. What you need after all that eating and drinking is a cycle ride! So come along on an easy-paced ride taking in several of the new\, upgraded or proposed cycle routes in Southwark and Lambeth. Out via Quietway 1 from Rotherhithe New Road bridge to Oxley Close and proposed Q7 from Burgess Park to Elmington Rd. Stop at Camberwell Green to consider what can be done about the big crossroads (out to consultation soon). Continue on Camberwell New Rd (was to be Superhighway 5 once) to the Oval junction\, then the upgraded CS7 to the Elephant and Castle. Have a look at the new 2-way\, peninsular\, layout of the northern junction\, then the nice\, recently opened\, cycle track that begins the North-South Superhighway. Return using the western part of Q1 to Lynton Rd\, followed by a back streets route to Canada Water via the north end of Southwark Park.  Suitable for anyone with a bike. Route at  https://goo.gl/04a6MX

SUMMARY:Dr Bike @ LSBU
DESCRIPTION:At London Southbank Uni 9-11am on Wednesday November 11th. \nProfessional mechanic Clara will be aided and abetted and hopefully not too much hindered by a team of Southwark Cyclist assistants dispensing maps\, info and advice. \nClara\, more usefully\, will be fixing brakes\, gears and tyres. She’ll fit parts if you bring them and make your bike quieter\, safer and smoother to ride \nWe’ll be opposite the Keyworth Centre in Keyworth St (part of the Elephant bypass that runs through the Uni). There’s no shelter but hey\, we’re cyclists\, we’re waterproof. No coffee either. We can’t do without that but bring your own. \nOpen to all (though positioned for the convenience of LBSU students and staff). \n  \n
