SUMMARY:Waterlink Way Healthy Ride from Canada Water
DESCRIPTION:Waterlink Way Healthy Ride from Canada Water\nPlease register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/waterllink-way-cycle-ride-from-canada-water-tickets-1981014568903?aff=oddtdtcreator \nWork is starting in February to replace the worn out bridge at the start of the Waterlink Way (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DTabTFPjP-l/).  This means the Waterlink Way will effectively be closed for 3 months. Bruce will lead a last WW ride before the closure. Meet 10am at Deal Porter Square (next to Canada Water Library\, opposite CW Station) and take the Windrush Line ( ex-Overground) to Sydenham. Taking bikes on these trains is surprisingly easy especially at step free stations like Canada Water and Sydenham. We will then ride back to Canada Water arriving about 12.30. Can also join at Sydenham Station at 10.25am; please indicate on Eventbrite if you intend to do this.  NOTE this is Sydenham Station\, not Lower Sydenham or Sydenham Hill. \nRoute back at https://goo.gl/4DQ9Tb.  Down to Bells Green and join the Waterlink Way (Nat Route 21). Follow this excellent off-road path to Ladywell Fields\, then continue to Brookmill Park. Use the new segregated lane on Deptford Church St and get back to Canada Water on either Cycleway 10 or 4. Easy 1.5 – 2 hour ride back with lots of off road path. Remember to bring card or equivalent (fare £2:10). \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Jacqui is leading\, starting from The Southwark Needle\, London Bridge\, south side. Route will pick up Cycleway 14 and cross river at Southwark bridge. Through the City and follow C11\, then C1. Return via Clissold Park then C1 back to the starting point on London Bridge. Time for a comfort stop at the Coal House café in the Wetlands. To access the café we will have to walk our bikes along the boardwalk.  Queue for coffee etc may be long\, so perhaps bring snacks and drink. Mostly quiet streets but possibly a bit busy in the City on our return. Traffic free in the Wetlands where the path is narrow and shared with pedestrians and runners\, so please give way when necessary. The surface there is compacted gravel. Numbers will be restricted to 10 (including Ride Leader) as a big group would be difficult (and unpopular) in the Nature reserve. So please only register when you are sure you will be able to attend. \nGeneral Info. Due to the excellent planning from the late 1980s there are lots of pedestrian/cycle paths and this 2 hour ride is nearly completely off-road. A great ride for someone relatively new to cycling.  Start/finish point will be Deal Porter Square\, opposite Canada Water Station\, SE16 7AR. Start time 10am and finish 12 noon. Route is: Southwark Park then Thames path all the way to Deptford Historic Riverside. Along this stretch will pass the departure point of the Mayflower\, the first underwater tunnel anywhere and the Surrey Docks Farm. From Deptford will head back via the Surrey Canal Linear Park to South Dock\, Greenland Dock and Russia Woodland. Final stop at Stave Hill to admire the view then loop past Surrey Water and back  to Canada Water. 10 miles and as a final bonus – this route is entirely without hills!  No coffee break as this is a short ride\, but time for a coffee at the end. Bruce leading.  Annotated route map at https://goo.gl/5pFd9b.  Last ridden Oct 2023\, report here \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. SUMMARY:Ride the Boat Race course
DESCRIPTION:Ride the Boat Race Course \nPlease register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/annual-southwark-cyclists-pre-boat-race-ride-2026-tickets-1985553034576?aff=oddtdtcreator \nThis is one of Jamie’s regular and very popular rides. Here are his instructions plus a bit of background. \nHistory\nThe first Oxford & Cambridge boat race took place in 1845 and is deliberately timed to take advantage of a falling tide on the River Thames. This ensures that the Crews have a strong current in their favour especially as they reach the final stetch toward the finish. This year the 171st race will take place on Saturday 4th April 2026 with the Women’s Race starting at 2.21pm followed by the Men’s Race starting at 3.21pm. \nCoordinating Instructions and Timings.\nThis year’s annual Southwark Cyclists boat race ride will take place on Saturday 28th March 2026. Riders will meet at 09.30am outside Waterloo Station at the bottom of the steps under the  Victory Arch that is 50 yards up on the right from where York Road meets Mepham Street and Cab Road just before the road bridge. A short safety briefing will be given at 09.30am. The ride should arrive back at Waterloo Station before 3.00pm. \nMission\nTo cycle the iconic 4.25 mile course of the 171st Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race up the Middlesex bank of the Thames from the Race start line at Putney embankment to the finish post at Chiswick Bridge by Mortlake.\nRoute\nThis is a circular route that involves some great river views and enjoyable cycling in stages for about 20 miles in all. The route out is mostly along quieter roads and river paths that are suitable for competent rider abilities. The return route is predominantly on cycle lanes\, via Hammersmith\, Kensington Gardens\, Buckingham Palace and back to Waterloo.\nRations and Water\nThere will be a coffee stop at the Putney race start. Riders are also advised to bring a sandwich etc for our other stop at the race finish by Chiswick Bridge.\nChecks and Equipment\nRiders are urged to pre-check their bikes e.g. A = Air in tyres\, B = Brakes\, C= Chain & gears etc. The river route can be cold at this time of year thus Riders are advised to bring: a warm fleece and waterproof clothing. \nGeneral Information about the Healthy Rides.  Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.  Remember things can\, and do\, happen on bike rides and we sometimes get delayed. SUMMARY:The Great Fire of London Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:The Great Fire of London Ride  \nNote. You must register on Eventbrite\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-great-fire-of-london-ride-tickets-1987769935386?aff=oddtdtcreator \nA short and leisurely eight-mile ride around the perimeter of the area destroyed in the Great Fire\, based on Hollar’s map of 1666. Starting 10am at London Bridge (Southwark Gateway Needle\, south side\, near London Bridge Station)\, we pass the Monument and go down Pudding Lane to join the cycleway to the Tower\, which just escaped the blaze. We’ll pay a brief visit to St.Olave’s church\, where Pepys worshipped\, and is buried. We then follow the edge of the affected area\, with occasional stops at some churches that just survived\, including the imposing St. Katharine Cree. This will take us up through Austen Friars to London Wall and the ruins of St. Elsyng Spital\, and then Aldersgate Rotunda\, where we stop for coffee. We then make our way via New Fetter Lane to Fleet Street\, and take a diversion to cycle around the safe space of Lincoln’s Inn Fields\, to which the unfortunate inhabitants of the affected area were advised to carry all their worldly goods\, before making our way through the Temple\, which just escaped the flames\, and so back to the cycleway that brings us to London Bridge. \nJohn S leading\, Start: London Bridge 10am\, Finish: London Bridge 12.30pm \nGeneral Information about the Healthy Rides.  Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.
