DESCRIPTION:The doctor returns after his winter sleep. He will be under Peckham Arch (south end of Surrey Canal Path) ably assisted by his team of elves. \nThe doctor will tighten your brakes\, pump up your tyres and do technical things to your gears which will stop them clicking and jumping and not feeling quite right. He will also give wise advice on whether larger scale or more serious things need doing. \nThe elves have supplies of propaganda\, and info on local cycling matters aka gossip. They don’t have maps because TfL haven’t reprinted them.  Drop by and give them a try.

SUMMARY:Exchanging Places and free Bike Marking
DESCRIPTION:Take a look at life from the cab of a lorry and see how much (or how horrifyingly little) the driver sees. ‘Exchanging Places’ cycle safety events are run by the Metropolitan Police and allow cyclists to get a better understanding of what drivers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and buses see around them by sitting in the cab. \nThe Met’s finest will also security mark your bike — which is a good idea as it means that there is a full record of your bike on file somewhere and if it gets nicked and the police by chance find it\, you might get it back. \nGetting your bicycle visibly security marked and registered acts as a deterrent to potential cycle thieves as they know your bike is traceable\, and reduces your chances of being a victim of cycle theft. And\, if it should be stolen\, registered bicycles and far more likely to be reunited with their rightful owners. \nTeam London Bridge are hosting this event at the junction of Weston Street and St Thomas Street (just outside London Bridge Station)\, 5pm-7pm on Tuesday 4th April. It’s good for everyone and we want to help everyone try it out. \nThe acting Director of Public Health in Southwark Dr Jin Lim is coming to talk to us about cycling for health and (we hope) what we can all do to promote it. He’ll be first on the agenda at 6.30pm. Everyone is welcome to come and hear him. You don’t have to stay for the rest of the meeting. We understand. \nThis meeting is at our new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture above. It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \nVery respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, left into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nLast time I said that\, sadly\, there was no pub in the area. SUMMARY:Mardi Gras Bike Parade
DESCRIPTION:Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday or\, lapsing into English\, Shrove Tuesday. Your last chance to eat sugar\, butter\, eggs and flour for a month. For the first time it will be celebrated in Borough and Bankside with a Bike Parade. \nStarting at 1pm\, decorated bikes\, included disabled-accessible bikes from Wheels for Wellbeing\, will travel a short route through Bankside and Borough\, taking some Mardi Gras colour to the Tate. The exact route is still under discussion but experienced cyclists\, abled and dis-abled are needed to marshal the ride plus some arty/crafty types to decorate the bikes. \nThe day will round off with a free Mardi Gras Pancake Party. Children are invited to come after school from 3:30 to 5pm for pancake flipping contests\, fresh pancakes\, live music and a chance to ride the decorated Mardi Gras bikes. The party will take place next to The Fruit Tree on Great Suffolk Street\, SE1 1PE. \nExperienced cyclists are needed both to ride the accessible bikes and to join in on their own bikes. The Parade will be marshalled and riders with experience of guided group cycling are particularly needed. Children\, sadly\, are not allowed on the Parade but can try the accessible bikes at the Pancake Party. DESCRIPTION:See as much (or as little) as he sees. This information could save your life. You can get your bike safety marked and registered at the same time which could save your bike. \nMace construction project\, Highpoint\, will be partnering Met Police and Balfe’s Bikes to provide a cycle safety event for local cyclists. Balfe’s will give your bike a mini-MOT and the Met will security mark it. DESCRIPTION:Peddlemywheels are bringing their bike market to the Lambeth Car Free Day in Cornwall Road \nhttp://www.peddlemywheels.com/home \n\n\n\nLambeth Car Free Day\, SE1 \nCelebrating the better use of public space than merely for cars\, the council will be filling Cornwall Road with “fun and music”. \nCornwall Road will be closed to cars for the day on Saturday 24 September and returned it to the people. The council said “Encouraging cycling and walking over sedentary travel is particularly important at the moment with startling number of obese children and the shocking levels of air pollution. Adding a bit of active travel into your day will improve health\, decrease carbon emissions and in many cases save time and money.” \nLambeth Sustainable Travel stall will be there with staff to discuss schemes such as ‘try before you bike’ and cycle training. If you have a bike to sell you can bring it on the day and also buy a quality second hand one for you or your child at the fabulous Lambeth Bike Market which tours schools and is being showcased this year at Car Free Day. \nCornwall Road runs between Upper Ground and The Cut. SUMMARY:Bike Train to Central London
DESCRIPTION:Come on our famous Bike Train and find\, like previous riders\, that it “changes everything” about getting on your bike to work. Another rider said it’s “very stress-free”.Our route follows the route of the old Surrey Canal of which this mega-park is just a part. This is a canal bridge over the former canal about half way through. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, north along a traffic-calmed backstreet\, onto the pavement-cycling lanes along the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle bypass and then onto the lovely new TfL segregation all the way to Blackfriars. Arrival time approx 8.45am. On time every time. Fun and free. \nFrom there riders are taken on by individual arrangement and we have taken people to Mayfair\, Kings Cross\, Faringdon and Tower Hill. All easy\, legal and free. Return rides arranged individually. \nWe start at 8am from Nunhead Station and pick up riders from Peckham Rye station (from the bike stands behind McDonalds) at 8.10am. DESCRIPTION:Feeder Ride from Peckham Rye Park Cafe departs 10am \nThis is Britain’s biggest bike festival and last year around 50\,000 riders took part. This celebration of cycling\, the event gives cyclists of all abilities the chance to ride through traffic-free streets in central London. The route will take in the Strand and Lincoln’s Inn Fields and returns to the Victoria Embankment\, taking in a section of the newly opened East-West Cycle Superhighway (CS3). \nThe eight-mile circuit passes iconic London landmarks including Buckingham Palace\, Trafalgar Square\, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England and again goes south of the river with a loop over Waterloo Bridge\, offering stunning views of London. You can stop and start\, take photos and experience the fun and freedom of riding without worrying about cars\, lorries and buses. From Tower Bridge to Buckingham Palace\, London’s greatest sights create an inspiring backdrop for a memorable day of cycling. \nSouthwark Cyclists will be leading an all-age ride up to join the London FreeCycle on July 30th. Our feeder ride departs from the cafe on Peckham Rye Common and there will be a ride back for those who want it at 3pm on the day. To take part just turn up.

DESCRIPTION:Our monthly meeting will be at the new Nunhead Green Community Centre — upstairs in Holly. There’s a lift for those who can’t manage stairs. \nThere’s parking for 6 bikes outside the centre and more in a bike shed behind the centre which is dark and unobserved and accessible over the back wall. There’s more parking around the Green and there’s always been enough so far. \nThe approach from Nunhead Lane involves a not very nice\, not very wide blind bend which the traffic takes too fast\, so the advised approach is via Scylla Road. This route needs some railings removed and some drop kerbs but from an absence of traffic point of view\, it is the best.

SUMMARY:Bike Train runs again
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train runs again — the weather gods are smiling on us. We skip (can trains skip?) between the rain-drops\, lightening bolts and thunder. \nOur route is the usual one; two parks\, one traffic-calmed backstreet\, the pavement-cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the lovely new segregated cycle lanes. Everyone who tries it is converted. \nWe start from Nunhead Station at 8am; pick up at Peckham Rye station at 8.10am and meet a branch line coming in from Denmark Hill Station at 8.20am in Burgess Park. The departure point from Peckham Rye station is the bike stands behind McDonalds (west end of Holly Grove). We arrive at the north end of Blackfriars Bridge at 8.45am. \nFrom there we take riders on individually. So far we have taken people to Kings Cross\, Faringdon\, Mayfair\, Hyde Park and the Tower (not for incarceration). All this is free. Everyone is cheerful and no one fears for their life at any point. \nReturn rides are also arranged individually. Like real trains these are heart-stoppingly expensive. No that’s a joke. Or that a community of French Huguenot refugees settled here? Have you spotted the Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Camberwell New Road? Ever bought Cypriot pastries in SE5 or French chocolate in SE15? \n\n\nThis free guided cycle ride will uncover the European history of Camberwell and Peckham. It’s led by Eleanor Margolies\, author of ‘Green Camberwell’. All welcome\, including accompanied children. DESCRIPTION:Easy-going ride mostly on quiet roads and off-road paths. Canada Water to Dulwich and back.\nOut via Queens Rd\, Nunhead Green (location of Southwark Cyclists Monthly Meetings\, 2nd Wednesdays. About 10 miles total\, so should be nice 2 hour ride. DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train ride with no work at the other end of it. What’s not to like? \nThe idea is to start from the place the Bike Train starts at Peckham Rye Station\, from the bike stands behind McDonalds. Then to follow the Bike Train route up to town\, do a loop to look at the sights and come home again. \nThe advantage of doing it on a non-working day would be less stress\, quieter roads\, and no feeling of having to get anywhere by a certain time. The pace would be slower\, we could take the kids\, anyone could stop\, drop out or turn round and go home at any point\, less commitment\, less stress. \nWe will do an interesting circle from Blackfriars along the Embankment to Westminster and back via the South Bank Centre so that it’s not just a route but has more context and shows ways to get to more interesting places than work.

SUMMARY:Bike Train: NEW Denmark Hill branch
DESCRIPTION:From Wednesday May 11th the Bike Train service is expanding to Denmark Hill station. It will leave Denmark Hill at 8.10 am meeting up with the rest of the carriages in Burgess Park. Timetable will be otherwise unchanged\, leaving Nunhead at 8am and Peckham Rye Station (from the bike stands behind McDonalds) at 8.10am. The same excellent and reliable service will be provided. Great cycling weather is guaranteed. \nThe Bike Train runs to Blackfriars station but there are great onward connections from there to Faringdon\, Kings Cross\, Westminster and Mayfair with riders travelling on to all these destinations who can take fellow travellers along. \nWe are also running a weekend Bike Train over the same route\, probably on May 15th. Whether to run it in the morning or afternoon isn’t yet decided. Obviously this won’t be a Bike Train to work but it will be all the better for that. The idea is see the route\, try it out\, and drink coffee along the way without the added stress of trying to get to work and worrying about being late and covered in oil. \nIf you are interested and you are already in touch about the Bike Train just mail us and say so.
