SUMMARY:Canada Water-South Bank - Deptford - Canada Water Loop
DESCRIPTION:Canada Water-South Bank-Deptford-Canada Water Loop\nNOTE. Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:   https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/canada-water-to-south-bank-loop-tickets-654086419087 \nEasy ride that uses the Cycleways across north Southwark. Start/finish next to Decathlon\, London SE16 7FU\, beside Canada Water and near the station. Note change in meeting point as Saturday Market makes Deal Porter Square congested.  Begin by picking up Cycleway 14 on the Albion Channel close to Canada Water. Follow C14 past the Brunel Museum and the Salter Statues to Jamaica Rd.  Cycle crossing to C14 (Tanner St)\, continue past Guys Hospital and through Flat Iron Square to Blackfriars Rd. Leave C14 and head north on C6 to Upper Ground and follow this to the South Bank. Possible coffee break there. Continue along Upper Ground and join C10 (Quietway 1) at Cornwall Rd. Route heads back on C10 past the Old Vic\, through Trinity Square\, past Crol Café on Dunton Rd and Millwall Stadium\, through Folkstone Gardens\, eventually to Deptford High St. Probably turn there and head for the river and pick up National Route 4\, the Thameside route\, back to Canada Water.  This becomes C14 at South Dock and continues through Russia Woodland to the Albion Channel where we first joined it.  Ride suitable for newish cyclists to show the E-W routes in the north of the borough.  Plenty of interest for experienced cyclists. Bruce leading. 11 miles. Route at https://bit.ly/30lzAza.

DESCRIPTION:A Tour of 9 Cabmen’s Shelters\nPlease register on Eventbrite so that we can control numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-tour-of-9-cabmens-shelters-tickets-644823904657 \nDescribed as “A cross between a cricket pavilion and a large garden shed” these distinctive green structures were set up by the Cabmen’s Shelter Fund from 1875 to provide resting places\, food and shelter for London’s cabbies – from horse-drawn hansoms to the modern day LEVC-TX (electric taxi). Numbers have dwindled from 61 to just 13 – all of which are now Grade 2 listed as “Buildings of special interest\, warranting every effort to preserve them”. \nOur route will take us past 9 of the survivors\, starting with Temple Place then on up to Russell Square\, the West End\, Kensington & Chelsea\, Pimlico and back to the Embankment.  As we’ll mainly be in central London\, expect a mix of segregated cycle paths\, some short stretches on busy main roads plus quieter back streets. We’ll have a coffee/loo stop at some point\, either in Kensington Gardens or a transpontine detour to Battersea Park (because\, yes – we do go south of the river!). \nRoute:      https://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_5419085.html

DESCRIPTION:Great Trees Healthy Ride\nNOTE. Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/great-trees-cycle-ride-tickets-636814929597. If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place (How to cancel). \nA ride to look at some trees. Boring. Maybe – but trees\, we are realizing\, are not just a taken-for-granted background. They matter. They soak up CO2 and are good for our health.  Inspiration comes from a talk in 2021 to Better Streets Southwark by Paul Wood about Tree Talk and his amazing Tree Map. Route is based on Paul’s Great Trees of London Map (£8 from book shops).  We did this ride first in 2021\, see report.  Start is 9.30am from the Southwark Needle. Route an 11 mile circuit to 6 of the Great Trees. Route uses a mixture of paths and quiet streets\, just short stretches of busy road. Runs through Camberwell\, Peckham\, New Cross and Deptford.  Should end back at London Bridge at around midday. But feel free to bring a packed lunch.  Route will include Ealing Studios\, BBC Park Western\, White City\, Riverside Studios Hammersmith\, Langham Place\, Aldwych and Maida Vale (but not in that order!). Will use some of the quite extensive new cycle track on C9 in Hammersmith (map here\, consultation on improvements ends April 3rd). \nThis is a considerably longer ride than usual. Average speeds will be at our usual modest pace.  But you will need to be able to maintain this for 5-6 hours with only one longish break. Your bike also needs to be ready for the challenge so check it over\, sort out any niggles and bring a spare inner tube.

DESCRIPTION:Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:< https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dulwich-to-vauxhall-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-603190247267 > . If you cannot make it\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place (How to cancel). \nA flat route from Dulwich – yes indeed. Starting from Dulwich Clock Café in Dulwich Park at 10am\, quiet streets to Brockwell Park\, exit on to Brixton Water Lane\, then take Effra Road to Brixton Central.  Road takes its name from the River Effra whose valley we will follow. R. Effra not visible as it was buried in a sewer by Bazalgette in the mid-1860s.  Long run down Brixton Rd to the Oval\, bit boring but gets you there. On to CS5 at the Oval and follow this short segregated path to Vauxhall Bridge.  You used to be able to see the exit of the Effra into the Thames just upstream\, but the Tideway Tunnel people have built lots of stuff concealing this.  Apparently it is not where the Effra mostly entered the Thames anyway – find out more here (http://vauxhallhistory.org/river-effra-jon-newman/).  Short stop on Vauxhall Bridge then start the return past the new American embassy with its moat and defensive rampart. Take a look at the Sky Pool. Then past Nine Elms station\, followed by back streets across Stockwell and on to Herne Hill.  Finally Burbage Rd\, past the Velodrome (maybe pop in if we have time) to Dulwich Village and the Park.  Overall a mixture of quiet and busy streets\, some cycle lane. Care needed at Brixton central\, but we have done this ride several times without problems (report from Oct 2021).  Simon S. leading. Route at http://tinyurl.com/y7ul6r9r

SUMMARY:Ride Leaders Course
DESCRIPTION:Interested in leading social group rides? Maybe helping with our Healthy Rides? Or doing rides for another organisation\, or even just doing your own self-organised rides?  It is useful to learn from others which is why we run free 1-day courses to instruct experienced riders about organising and conducting group rides. \nNext course will be Sunday March 26th\, 10am to 4pm\, based at Dockhead Fire Station.  You do not have to be a member of Southwark Cyclists to join the course. If interested email Bruce Lynn at cyclebuddies@southwarkcyclists.org.uk. \nBut before doing this think about the following: \n\nAm I experienced enough? For example\, several years riding regularly in London (or equivalent city) .\nAm I really OK with being (partly) responsible for the safety of maybe 15 others?\nDo I have the time/energy to actually lead rides?\n\nNote other Ride Leader and Ride Marshal courses will be announced soon by the London Cycling Campaign\,

SUMMARY:Twelve London Cats Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/twelve-london-cats-cycle-ride-tickets-588559817257\n \nStart 10am\, London Bridge (Southwark Needle). Jane leading this 13 mile ride. This is a fun ride in which we will see at least 12 London Cats portrayed in stone\, wood\, bronze and gold\, so it’s hypoallergenic – though we may spot Hodge the resident mouser at Southwark Cathedral. Starting in SE1 and The City\, on to Bloomsbury\, up to Mornington Crescent & back via Covent Garden and Strand\, ending at The Little Cat cafe in Myatts Fields. \nSome short stretches on busy roads but mostly on quieter cycle routes. It will be stop/start with pauses (pawses?) for information en route and a coffee stop probably at Russell Square. Note that we are not finishing at the start location\, so make sure you have looked at your route home from Myatts Fields. Jane will be happy to suggest routes if needed.  Route map at https://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_5292470.html
