DESCRIPTION:I couldn’t truthfully tell you that this is a good likeness of our bike doctor. In fact I could truthfully tell you that it isn’t. However I could also truthfully tell you that he’s very good at his job and works very hard. \nHe’s coming to Quietway 1 for the first time with supporting bike health workers. With the bike nurses he will be indexing gears\, tightening brakes and pumping up tyres as well as giving wise advice. The doctor likes a challenge so bring your problems along. \nHis aides and attendants will be handing out literature\, discussing the latest news on bringing safe cycling to the Old Kent Road and gossiping. Everything is free. Everyone is welcome. A good time will be had by all unless it rains in which case I don’t know what we will do. \nThe google map below is more or less right. In practice we will be a little closer to the traffic lights on the opposite corner of Lynton Road to Crol and Co (77 Dunton Road) (excellent cafe).

SUMMARY:Bike Train to Blackfriars and onwards
DESCRIPTION:This is one of London’s largest and little-known parks. There’s 140 acres of it. Cyclists can use it but mysteriously not a lot do. Burgess Park and the Canal Path make up about a third of the Bike Train route. The segregated cycle lanes are about another third and traffic calmed backstreets are the final bit. The Bike Train goes through here. Nice. \nYou get the idea. The Bike Train route is mostly off-road with hundreds and hundreds of added cyclists. Come with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it’s OK that they start at the same time. \nThe starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. Camberwell Grove and Windsor Walk have both been closed since we started so this route keeps getting better. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, up a traffic-calmed back street\, onto the on-pavement cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the still lovely but no longer so new segregation up St George’s Way and Blackfriars Road. All legal and all as safe as your mother would make it. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and then a group goes north to Kings Cross and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. DESCRIPTION:As part of Southwark Cyclists bid for world domination we have been thinking of copying Hackney. They have a Family Cycling Library of bikes useful for families\, carrying children\, babies\, toddlers\, and lots and lots of shopping — bike seats\, trailers\, cargobikes\, tagalongs and other bits of family cycling equipment – all free to borrow. \nThe picture gives you the idea and shows founder Ruth-Anna Macqueen of Hackney Family Cycling who is coming to our monthly meeting to tell us how she set it up and how it operates. https://hackney.cc/events/hackney-family-cycling-library-launch-and-family-ride/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis meeting is at our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \n \nVery respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, left into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nLast time I said that\, sadly\, there was no pub in the area. DESCRIPTION:Cycle campaigning is simpler than you think\, but we need volunteers.  \nSouthwark Council and TfL won’t act without evidence that local people want cycling improvements. We need a bigger team to help us build cycling in Southwark and gather evidence that people support Space for Cycling. You can be a resident\, employee or business\, and even 15 minutes of your time will make a difference. \nTo learn more\, why not visit our “New Volunteers Meet-Up” on the 4th of July\, 6.30-8.30pm\, at The Grove pub on Camberwell Grove (formerly the Grand Union). You can drop in for 10 minutes or stay all evening.  \nIf you’ve already got an idea but you don’t know how to achieve it\, then come along and we’ll happily give advice. You usually need enthusiasm more than expertise!  \nIf you’re interested in helping but you don’t know what to do\, we need individuals and teams of volunteers to do things like:     \n– Identify problems on a route\n– Ride a proposed cycle route with Southwark Council planners\n– Write to local councillors\n– Teach a new cyclist a good commuter route\n– Write up a good cycling route for our website\n– Hand out recruitment or campaigning leaflets one morning\n– Add information about local problems to our wiki\n– Help marshal a Dr Bike session and advertise it to passers-by\n– Help load and unload bikes for the Dunwich Dynamo ride\n– Write to politicians about Direct Vision lorries\n– Project manage a group response to a Quietway or Superhighway proposal\n– Help make the proposed Dog Kennel Hill controlled parking zone better for cycling\n– Start organising Autumn Cycle to Work day\n– Run a hackspace\n– Help us to communicate our campaigns better \nA lot of new cycle routes are being proposed by Southwark Council and the Mayor of London – but if we don’t demonstrate enough community support they aren’t going to happen. SUMMARY:Exchanging Places and free Bike Marking
DESCRIPTION:Take a look at life from the cab of a lorry and see how much (or how horrifyingly little) the driver sees. ‘Exchanging Places’ cycle safety events are run by the Metropolitan Police and allow cyclists to get a better understanding of what drivers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and buses see around them by sitting in the cab. \nThe Met’s finest will also security mark your bike — which is a good idea as it means that there is a full record of your bike on file somewhere and if it gets nicked and the police by chance find it\, you might get it back. \nGetting your bicycle visibly security marked and registered acts as a deterrent to potential cycle thieves as they know your bike is traceable\, and reduces your chances of being a victim of cycle theft. And\, if it should be stolen\, registered bicycles and far more likely to be reunited with their rightful owners. \nTeam London Bridge are hosting this event at the junction of Weston Street and St Thomas Street (just outside London Bridge Station)\, 5pm-7pm on Tuesday 4th April. SUMMARY:Mardi Gras Bike Parade
DESCRIPTION:Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday or\, lapsing into English\, Shrove Tuesday. Your last chance to eat sugar\, butter\, eggs and flour for a month. For the first time it will be celebrated in Borough and Bankside with a Bike Parade. \nStarting at 1pm\, decorated bikes\, included disabled-accessible bikes from Wheels for Wellbeing\, will travel a short route through Bankside and Borough\, taking some Mardi Gras colour to the Tate. The exact route is still under discussion but experienced cyclists\, abled and dis-abled are needed to marshal the ride plus some arty/crafty types to decorate the bikes. \nThe day will round off with a free Mardi Gras Pancake Party. Children are invited to come after school from 3:30 to 5pm for pancake flipping contests\, fresh pancakes\, live music and a chance to ride the decorated Mardi Gras bikes. The party will take place next to The Fruit Tree on Great Suffolk Street\, SE1 1PE. \nExperienced cyclists are needed both to ride the accessible bikes and to join in on their own bikes. The Parade will be marshalled and riders with experience of guided group cycling are particularly needed. Children\, sadly\, are not allowed on the Parade but can try the accessible bikes at the Pancake Party. DESCRIPTION:See as much (or as little) as he sees. This information could save your life. You can get your bike safety marked and registered at the same time which could save your bike. \nMace construction project\, Highpoint\, will be partnering Met Police and Balfe’s Bikes to provide a cycle safety event for local cyclists. Balfe’s will give your bike a mini-MOT and the Met will security mark it. After that it’s too cold for the mechanics hands and also too dark for them to see what they are doing. \nLet the Doctor have a look at your bike before the winter sets in. The Doctor will be there indexing gears\, sorting out brakes and dispensing wise advice. And with him will be his able assistants also working away on bikes with various side-kicks dispensing maps\, gossip and goodwill. \nFind them under Peckham Arch (at the south end of Surrey Canal Path) from 5.30-7.30pm. DESCRIPTION:You don’t need to be a student to bring your bike to this Dr Bike but it’s timed to be useful for those who get creative\, learn or otherwise feed their minds during the day. Dr Bike is free bike maintenance event. DESCRIPTION:Peddlemywheels are bringing their bike market to the Lambeth Car Free Day in Cornwall Road \nhttp://www.peddlemywheels.com/home \n\n\n\nLambeth Car Free Day\, SE1 \nCelebrating the better use of public space than merely for cars\, the council will be filling Cornwall Road with “fun and music”. \nCornwall Road will be closed to cars for the day on Saturday 24 September and returned it to the people. The council said “Encouraging cycling and walking over sedentary travel is particularly important at the moment with startling number of obese children and the shocking levels of air pollution. Adding a bit of active travel into your day will improve health\, decrease carbon emissions and in many cases save time and money.” \nLambeth Sustainable Travel stall will be there with staff to discuss schemes such as ‘try before you bike’ and cycle training. If you have a bike to sell you can bring it on the day and also buy a quality second hand one for you or your child at the fabulous Lambeth Bike Market which tours schools and is being showcased this year at Car Free Day. \nCornwall Road runs between Upper Ground and The Cut. SUMMARY:Bike Train to Central London
DESCRIPTION:Come on our famous Bike Train and find\, like previous riders\, that it “changes everything” about getting on your bike to work. Another rider said it’s “very stress-free”.Our route follows the route of the old Surrey Canal of which this mega-park is just a part. This is a canal bridge over the former canal about half way through. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, north along a traffic-calmed backstreet\, onto the pavement-cycling lanes along the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle bypass and then onto the lovely new TfL segregation all the way to Blackfriars. Arrival time approx 8.45am. On time every time. Fun and free. \nFrom there riders are taken on by individual arrangement and we have taken people to Mayfair\, Kings Cross\, Faringdon and Tower Hill. All easy\, legal and free. Return rides arranged individually. \nWe start at 8am from Nunhead Station and pick up riders from Peckham Rye station (from the bike stands behind McDonalds) at 8.10am. DESCRIPTION:Feeder Ride from Peckham Rye Park Cafe departs 10am \nThis is Britain’s biggest bike festival and last year around 50\,000 riders took part. This celebration of cycling\, the event gives cyclists of all abilities the chance to ride through traffic-free streets in central London. The route will take in the Strand and Lincoln’s Inn Fields and returns to the Victoria Embankment\, taking in a section of the newly opened East-West Cycle Superhighway (CS3). \nThe eight-mile circuit passes iconic London landmarks including Buckingham Palace\, Trafalgar Square\, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England and again goes south of the river with a loop over Waterloo Bridge\, offering stunning views of London. You can stop and start\, take photos and experience the fun and freedom of riding without worrying about cars\, lorries and buses. From Tower Bridge to Buckingham Palace\, London’s greatest sights create an inspiring backdrop for a memorable day of cycling. \nSouthwark Cyclists will be leading an all-age ride up to join the London FreeCycle on July 30th. Our feeder ride departs from the cafe on Peckham Rye Common and there will be a ride back for those who want it at 3pm on the day. To take part just turn up.

SUMMARY:Monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly meeting will be at the new Nunhead Green Community Centre — upstairs in Holly. There’s a lift for those who can’t manage stairs. \nThere’s parking for 6 bikes outside the centre and more in a bike shed behind the centre which is dark and unobserved and accessible over the back wall. There’s more parking around the Green and there’s always been enough so far. \nThe approach from Nunhead Lane involves a not very nice\, not very wide blind bend which the traffic takes too fast\, so the advised approach is via Scylla Road. This route needs some railings removed and some drop kerbs but from an absence of traffic point of view\, it is the best.

SUMMARY:Bike Train runs again
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train runs again — the weather gods are smiling on us. We skip (can trains skip?) between the rain-drops\, lightening bolts and thunder. \nOur route is the usual one; two parks\, one traffic-calmed backstreet\, the pavement-cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the lovely new segregated cycle lanes. Everyone who tries it is converted. \nWe start from Nunhead Station at 8am; pick up at Peckham Rye station at 8.10am and meet a branch line coming in from Denmark Hill Station at 8.20am in Burgess Park. The departure point from Peckham Rye station is the bike stands behind McDonalds (west end of Holly Grove). We arrive at the north end of Blackfriars Bridge at 8.45am. \nFrom there we take riders on individually. So far we have taken people to Kings Cross\, Faringdon\, Mayfair\, Hyde Park and the Tower (not for incarceration). All this is free. Everyone is cheerful and no one fears for their life at any point. \nReturn rides are also arranged individually. Like real trains these are heart-stoppingly expensive. No that’s a joke.
