SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:The dark adds a little romance to Dr Bike as the night’s draw in. It gets cold and wet too so the workers may be huddled together under the Arch to keep warm. As we all know the best way to keep warm is to keep active so keep them working. The good Doctor and his attendant bike nurses will fettle your bike. They index gears\, tighten brakes\, pump up your tyres and warn you to clean your chain. Their bike health care assistants have maps\, info\, and lots of local cycling-related gossip. \nAll this for your bike. It’s free. All bikes are welcome. We are all part of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns to make London safer for cyclists (what could be better?). Most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Most of live in Southwark but you don’t have to. As at all the best parties\, there are no rules\, just wander up.

SUMMARY:To central London by Bike Taxi and Bike Train
DESCRIPTION:It seems to be just me who finds black cabs romantic. Most people immediately associate them with enormous fares. Anyway Bike Taxi will not be romantic (during working hours at any rate) and they are free. \nThe idea is that your Bike Taxi will take you anywhere you wish to go — any time\, any place — by arrangement. Which means if your Bike Taxi-driver is up for getting you there. So you say what you want to do and we find someone to get you there. Your flexible friend. \nThe Bike Train will still run. It’s a commuter ride leaving out the crush\, the waiting\, the heat and the congestion. We take about 35 minutes to get from Peckham Rye to Blackfriars Bridge and we do not go fast. I’m the pace-setter and I go about 8mph. Occasionally I overtake (small) children but I’m generally overtaken by everyone else. \n\n\n\nCome with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it’s OK that they start at the same time. \nThe starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. Camberwell Grove and Windsor Walk have both been closed since we started so this route keeps getting better. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, up a traffic-calmed back street\, onto the on-pavement cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the still lovely but no longer so new segregation up St George’s Way and Blackfriars Road. All legal and all as safe as your mother would make it. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up \nThe map is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12 \nNota Bene that the bit from Dulwich Village to Denmark Hill only runs for special occasions and subject to bribery (surprisingly small amounts accepted). So if that’s the bit for you let us know asap so that we run it. \n\n\n\nAnd the cycle.travel map is here: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/41005. The info with the map says we do 500m on major roads so it may not know about the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road — and 130m pushing. No pushing. I’m fine to push when required but it’s not required. \n\n\n\n\n\nSouthwark Cyclists is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for more\, better cycling in London. SUMMARY:Dr Bike on QW1
DESCRIPTION:This isn’t a good likeness of Charlie or Andy but you get the idea. What they have in common is that they are good at fixing bikes. Our bike doctors will be indexing gears\, tightening brakes and fixing tyres and their health assistants will be dispensing maps\, cycling info and gossip. \nCharlie and Andy will be working on Quietway 1 at the Dunton Road/Lynton Road lights — near the excellent Crol coffee shop. There’s no shelter in this salubrious spot. The current weather forecast shows fluffy white clouds with sunny rays but that may change. If it changes to rain  the doctor may stay in bed. If not\, she’ll see you there. \n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:The doctor doesn’t look like this\, of course\, and neither do his bike health care assistants. But pictures of cheerful and friendly looking young women improve everything. No cycle marking\, sorry\, we’re working on it. \nThe different looking doctor and bike nurses will be fixing brakes\, indexing gears\, pumping up tyres and offering wise advice. He carries a few (very cheap and very basic) spare parts and tells it how it is. His unmechanical assistants dispense goodwill\, gossip and TfL maps. \nIf that sounds good look for him under Peckham Arch at the north end of Rye Lane/south end of Surrey Canal Path between 5.30-7.30pm. Open to all and all welcome. No charges\, no enquiries into your habits or requests for donations. Free.

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:The meeting is at our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVery respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, left into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nLast time I said that\, sadly\, there was no pub in the area. There is some dispute about this but I have to say I haven’t noticed anywhere to drink. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:The doctor doesn’t look anything like this of course but it’s a media tradition that everything is improved with a picture of a good looking young woman and why should I resist. \nThe three guys that do all the work are not actually bad to look at especially when they are working on your bike. SUMMARY:Dr Bike comes to Bermondsey
DESCRIPTION:I couldn’t truthfully tell you that this is a good likeness of our bike doctor. In fact I could truthfully tell you that it isn’t. However I could also truthfully tell you that he’s very good at his job and works very hard. \nHe’s coming to Quietway 1 for the first time with supporting bike health workers. With the bike nurses he will be indexing gears\, tightening brakes and pumping up tyres as well as giving wise advice. The doctor likes a challenge so bring your problems along. \nHis aides and attendants will be handing out literature\, discussing the latest news on bringing safe cycling to the Old Kent Road and gossiping. Everything is free. Everyone is welcome. A good time will be had by all unless it rains in which case I don’t know what we will do. \nThe google map below is more or less right. In practice we will be a little closer to the traffic lights on the opposite corner of Lynton Road to Crol and Co (77 Dunton Road) (excellent cafe).

SUMMARY:Dr Bike
DESCRIPTION:Come and meet our all-knowing\, all-seeing mechanic who distributes wisdom and bike knowledge to those who have ears to hear. The accompanying elves are pretty wise too though a lot more modest. \n\nGet these tools to work on your bike in London’s most skilled hands. Dr Bike and his expert team will fine-tune your bike — tighten the brakes\, index the gears and pump up the tyres. His team of support workers will be offering maps\, info and gossip. Sadly\, no coffee. \nThe new TfL cycling maps will be available and freely distributed if you get there on time. If you want to order your own you can do that here: https://tfl.gov.uk/forms/12419.aspx . You can only order 6 at a time unless you pretend to be very important in which case they probably try and send you a bill. \nTo help you find all the wonderfulness\, Peckham Arch looks like this: [upload.wikimedia.org] And the map to find the Arch looks like this: [www.bing.com]

SUMMARY:Dr Bike and Bike Marking
DESCRIPTION:Get your bike checked over and security marked. All free. Mechanics will be tightening brakes\, pumping up tyres and indexing your gears. Never make those strange noises again when you brake or change gear. \nBack in the day the police used to offer Bike Marking for free as part of their fight against crime. They can’t afford to do that now so Team London Bridge are stumping up to offer a bike marking service. \nBest is not to get your bike stolen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxBmfvwJnZM. Starring our own much-loved Barry Mason. Two good locks. \nNext best is to get it back again. Register your bike. https://www.bikeregister.com \n

SUMMARY:Bike Train to Blackfriars and onwards
DESCRIPTION:This is one of London’s largest and little-known parks. There’s 140 acres of it. Cyclists can use it but mysteriously not a lot do. Burgess Park and the Canal Path make up about a third of the Bike Train route. The segregated cycle lanes are about another third and traffic calmed backstreets are the final bit. The Bike Train goes through here. Nice. \nYou get the idea. The Bike Train route is mostly off-road with hundreds and hundreds of added cyclists. Come with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and then a group goes north to Kings Cross and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up \nThe map is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12. The bit from Dulwich Village to Denmark Hill only runs for special occasions and subject to bribery (quite small amounts accepted). So if that’s the bit for you let us know asap so that it runs. \n\n\n\n\n\nAnd the cycle.travel map is here: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/41005. The info with the map says we do 500m on major roads so it may not know about the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road — and 130m pushing. No pushing. I’m fine to push when required but it’s not required.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike
DESCRIPTION:Have toolkit will travel. Meet our all-knowing\, all-seeing mechanic who distributes wisdom and bike knowledge to those who have ears to hear.

SUMMARY:Talk by Hackney Family Cycling
DESCRIPTION:As part of Southwark Cyclists bid for world domination we have been thinking of copying Hackney. They have a Family Cycling Library of bikes useful for families\, carrying children\, babies\, toddlers\, and lots and lots of shopping — bike seats\, trailers\, cargobikes\, tagalongs and other bits of family cycling equipment – all free to borrow. \nThe picture gives you the idea and shows founder Ruth-Anna Macqueen of Hackney Family Cycling who is coming to our monthly meeting to tell us how she set it up and how it operates. https://hackney.cc/events/hackney-family-cycling-library-launch-and-family-ride/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis meeting is at our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \n \nVery respectable. There is some dispute about this but I have to say I didn’t notice one. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Cycling away from Peckham Library on the Surrey Canal Path. It gets quite a bit busier than this in the rush hours of course. About 1000 cyclists come up here in the morning and one assumes that the same number come back in the evening only slightly more spread out (having gone to the pub\, worked late etc) \nHowever\, you get the idea. The Bike Train route is mostly off-road with hundreds and hundreds of added cyclists. Come with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train is at a new earlier time due to popular demand. That means 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it’s OK that they start at the same time. \nThe starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. SUMMARY:New Members Meet-Up
DESCRIPTION:Cycle campaigning is simpler than you think\, but we need volunteers. \nSouthwark Council and TfL won’t act without evidence that local people want cycling improvements. We need a bigger team to help us build cycling in Southwark and gather evidence that people support Space for Cycling. You can be a resident\, employee or business\, and even 15 minutes of your time will make a difference. \nTo learn more\, why not visit our “New Volunteers Meet-Up” on the 4th of July\, 6.30-8.30pm\, at The Grove pub on Camberwell Grove (formerly the Grand Union). You can drop in for 10 minutes or stay all evening. \nIf you’ve already got an idea but you don’t know how to achieve it\, then come along and we’ll happily give advice. You usually need enthusiasm more than expertise! \nIf you’re interested in helping but you don’t know what to do\, we need individuals and teams of volunteers to do things like: \n– Identify problems on a route\n– Ride a proposed cycle route with Southwark Council planners\n– Write to local councillors\n– Teach a new cyclist a good commuter route\n– Write up a good cycling route for our website\n– Hand out recruitment or campaigning leaflets one morning\n– Add information about local problems to our wiki\n– Help marshal a Dr Bike session and advertise it to passers-by\n– Help load and unload bikes for the Dunwich Dynamo ride\n– Write to politicians about Direct Vision lorries\n– Project manage a group response to a Quietway or Superhighway proposal\n– Help make the proposed Dog Kennel Hill controlled parking zone better for cycling\n– Start organising Autumn Cycle to Work day\n– Run a hackspace\n– Help us to communicate our campaigns better \nA lot of new cycle routes are being proposed by Southwark Council and the Mayor of London – but if we don’t demonstrate enough community support they aren’t going to happen. If you want to know more about potential improvements near you\, come along to the meet up or email southwark “at” lcc.org.uk \np.s. Seeing as you’ve read to the end\, why not answer the one-question Southwark Council Cycle Parking consultation\, if you live in affected streets.

SUMMARY:Return of Dr Bike
DESCRIPTION:The doctor returns after his winter sleep. He will be under Peckham Arch (south end of Surrey Canal Path) ably assisted by his team of elves. \nThe doctor will tighten your brakes\, pump up your tyres and do technical things to your gears which will stop them clicking and jumping and not feeling quite right. He will also give wise advice on whether larger scale or more serious things need doing. \nThe elves have supplies of propaganda\, and info on local cycling matters aka gossip. They don’t have maps because TfL haven’t reprinted them.  Drop by and give them a try.

SUMMARY:Exchanging Places and free Bike Marking
DESCRIPTION:Take a look at life from the cab of a lorry and see how much (or how horrifyingly little) the driver sees. ‘Exchanging Places’ cycle safety events are run by the Metropolitan Police and allow cyclists to get a better understanding of what drivers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and buses see around them by sitting in the cab. \nThe Met’s finest will also security mark your bike — which is a good idea as it means that there is a full record of your bike on file somewhere and if it gets nicked and the police by chance find it\, you might get it back. \nGetting your bicycle visibly security marked and registered acts as a deterrent to potential cycle thieves as they know your bike is traceable\, and reduces your chances of being a victim of cycle theft. And\, if it should be stolen\, registered bicycles and far more likely to be reunited with their rightful owners. \nTeam London Bridge are hosting this event at the junction of Weston Street and St Thomas Street (just outside London Bridge Station)\, 5pm-7pm on Tuesday 4th April. No need to register\, feel free to drop by.

It’s good for everyone and we want to help everyone try it out. \nThe acting Director of Public Health in Southwark Dr Jin Lim is coming to talk to us about cycling for health and (we hope) what we can all do to promote it. He’ll be first on the agenda at 6.30pm. Everyone is welcome to come and hear him. You don’t have to stay for the rest of the meeting. SUMMARY:Mardi Gras Bike Parade
DESCRIPTION:Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday or\, lapsing into English\, Shrove Tuesday. Your last chance to eat sugar\, butter\, eggs and flour for a month. For the first time it will be celebrated in Borough and Bankside with a Bike Parade. \nStarting at 1pm\, decorated bikes\, included disabled-accessible bikes from Wheels for Wellbeing\, will travel a short route through Bankside and Borough\, taking some Mardi Gras colour to the Tate. The exact route is still under discussion but experienced cyclists\, abled and dis-abled are needed to marshal the ride plus some arty/crafty types to decorate the bikes. \nThe day will round off with a free Mardi Gras Pancake Party. Children are invited to come after school from 3:30 to 5pm for pancake flipping contests\, fresh pancakes\, live music and a chance to ride the decorated Mardi Gras bikes. The party will take place next to The Fruit Tree on Great Suffolk Street\, SE1 1PE. \nExperienced cyclists are needed both to ride the accessible bikes and to join in on their own bikes. The Parade will be marshalled and riders with experience of guided group cycling are particularly needed. Children\, sadly\, are not allowed on the Parade but can try the accessible bikes at the Pancake Party. All riders must register in advance. \nTo take part\, apply via the website https://se1mardigras.wordpress.com or email hmdigitalprojects@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Final Dr Bike till Spring
DESCRIPTION:At the end of October Dr Bike returns to hibernation till Spring\, disappearing when the clocks go back and re-appearing when they go forward. The dark he can bear — it’s the cold and wet his hard-working hands don’t like. \nSo this is your last chance for a while to have the good doctor check your gears\, tighten your brakes\, raise your saddle and re-shape your bike to fit you. \nHe will be under Peckham Arch at the south end of Surrey Canal Path (just before the toucan crossing of Peckham High Street) with his trusty band of aiders and abettors. Not so many maps because TfL has taken them off the market to update them but lots of cheerfulness. \nAll free\, all welcome

Free\, everyone welcome. \nThis service must stop at the end of October. Last one: October 27th\, after that it’s too cold for the mechanics’ hands and also too dark to see what they are doing.

SUMMARY:Bike Market -- sell your bike or buy another and have two
DESCRIPTION:Peddlemywheels are bringing their bike market to the Lambeth Car Free Day in Cornwall Road \nhttp://www.peddlemywheels.com/home \n\n\n\nLambeth Car Free Day\, SE1 \nCelebrating the better use of public space than merely for cars\, the council will be filling Cornwall Road with “fun and music”. \nCornwall Road will be closed to cars for the day on Saturday 24 September and returned it to the people. The council said “Encouraging cycling and walking over sedentary travel is particularly important at the moment with startling number of obese children and the shocking levels of air pollution. Adding a bit of active travel into your day will improve health\, decrease carbon emissions and in many cases save time and money.” \nLambeth Sustainable Travel stall will be there with staff to discuss schemes such as ‘try before you bike’ and cycle training. If you have a bike to sell you can bring it on the day and also buy a quality second hand one for you or your child at the fabulous Lambeth Bike Market which tours schools and is being showcased this year at Car Free Day. \nCornwall Road runs between Upper Ground and The Cut. Take no notice of the Google Map. it’s wrong. \n
