SUMMARY:Bike Taxi
DESCRIPTION:This is part of our series of personalised rides which do what it says on the tin and escort riders to where they want to go — within reason folks\, within reason. To arrange one for yourself or your BF contact southwark@lcc.org.uk. \nThis one goes from East Dulwich station to the Tower of London. There are routes to do it which don’t involve going over Tower Bridge but the escorted cyclist chose to look her fears in the eye. Tower Bridge is not as scary as it looks because the ferocious speed control on the bridge itself keeps the motors under control — it’s the junctions at either end of it which can feel less enjoyable and we shall be keeping those to a minimum. \nTo join or arrange a different one\, contact the email address above or text 07842 640 207. \n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on Quietway 1
DESCRIPTION:Our team of four is led by professional mechanic Charlie\, with three ace amateurs\, Andy\, Mike and Bruno. Andy co-ordinates Southwark Cyclists (I’m not sure what that means but I think it must be a bit like herding cats) and Bruno co-ordinates HMG (ditto) \nWhen Andy\, Mike and Bruno are baffled\, I’m afraid they pass you on to the queue for Charlie but then you will definitely get the best advice cycling experience and hard-earned knowledge can provide. \nWith his assistants Charlie can index your gears\, tighten your brakes\, diagnose that squeak and give advice on treatment for your hub gears and bottom bracket. The supporting cast keeps the queue in order (it doesn’t last long but it does build up sometimes) and dispenses maps\, gossip and cheerful chat. \nYou can find us at the crossroads of Lynton Road and Dunton Road. Just across from Cafe Crol. Nice coffee at Cafe Crol. Interesting heritage bike stands. See pic: \n \nEverything is free. We don’t carry parts so if you know (or suspect) that you need new brake blocks or cables it’s best to bring them. There are no restrictions. Occasionally people ask what the catch is. Let me know if you find out. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for safe\, enjoyable cycling in London. You don’t have to join\, sign anything or live in Southwark. Everyone is welcome.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:Peckham Arch looks like this but with a lot (a lot) more cars\, buses\, lorries and\, of course\, cyclists. The sky isn’t blue all the time either. The Arch is due to be demolished and the site turned into houses. It was due to be shut in the autumn of 2017 since legally it has to be shut before it’s pulled down. But so far that hasn’t happened and until it does we will be holding a Dr Bike underneath it on the first Thursday of every month. \nThree mechanics\, one pro and two ace amateurs\, will be mending bikes\, indexing gears\, tightening brakes\, pumping up tyres\, fixing that squeak and telling you why your back wheel wobbles. We don’t carry parts but if you bring brake pads we can fit them. Use our oil. Listen to our wise advice and ask tricky bike-questions. I’ve learned a lot just by listening. \nWe have bike maps\, local gossip to give as well as receive. Everyone is welcome. Everything is free. THERE IS NO CATCH. The next person to snigger knowingly when I say that will be reported to the cynicism police. \nWe are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which works for safe\, enjoyable cycling in London. You don’t need to be a member or live in Southwark. Everything we do is free and as welcoming as we can make it.

DESCRIPTION:Put these tools to work on your bike. This is just part of the kit Charlie cycles around with. Charlie is fit\, is Charlie. He’s the best pro-mechanic we know and he appears with two top quality amateurs. When they are baffled\, I’m afraid they pass you on to the queue for Charlie but then you will definitely get the best advice cycling experience and hard-earned knowledge can provide. \nWith his assistants Charlie can index your gears\, tighten your brakes\, diagnose that squeak and give advice on treatment for your hub gears and bottom bracket. SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:I know he looks a bit mad but he’s very good with bikes. Assuming Peckham Arch is still sheltering all-comers\, Dr Bike will be under the Arch indexing gears\, pumping up tyres\, tightening brakes and giving wise advice on filthy chains (“clean it” would be a printable precis) \nNothing costs anything. The wise advice is naturally free. One professional mechanic and two first-class amateurs. Maps\, chat\, cycling gossip. I’m afraid there is sometimes a queue but they clear it quickly. \nThere must be more to it than that. Er\, no there isn’t. We don’t make a profit. You don’t have to join anything\, sign anything or do anything more than let the goodwill roll over you. Wave as you go by.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on QW1
DESCRIPTION:Isn’t she gorgeous? None of our actually Bike Doctors look like this\, I’m sorry to have to tell you\, so this picture is just an opportunist stunt to stick in a girlie pic. Our Dr Bikes are all male (very male you may feel when you meet them)\, married (irrelevant) and fully clothed (be grateful). \nThey will be bike-doctoring on Quietway 1 on the third Thursday of every month starting today (April 19th). The unreliability of the number of Thursday in any particular month means that this arrangement will appear to jump about a bit but the general pattern will be one Thursday a month. \nWe will be on the Lynton Road/Dunton Road traffic lights — Crol coffee-shop might be a better signpost. It’s on the corner. We will be on a different corner where there are lights\, space but no shelter from the rain. What we will do in the rain has not been decided yet. Maybe retire to Crol. \nWe bring one professional mechanic called Charlie and two amateurs called Bruno and Andy. All staff are chosen for top-notchness except the hangers-on who give out maps\, wave their arms around and try to remember who is next in the queue. They are pretty second-rate. \nDon’t let anyone tell you that you will have to pay. You don’t. Or that you have to belong to the London Cycling Campaign. You don’t. We sort out bikes’ niggles\, brakes\, gears and tyres. We give wise advice “clean that chain” ” pump up this tyre more often” but we don’t carry spare parts. If you want simple stuff fitted like brake pads\, bring them with you. \nToodle-oo

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:Doesn’t look like your average GP\, does he? Certainly the screwdriver and the spanner would worry me if my doctor whipped them out. The mad glare doesn’t help either. But more calmly now. Fear not. Dr Bike is returning from his winter sleep. He reckons that by April it will be safe to come out from under the covers. He will be under Peckham Arch on the first Thursday of every month and on Quietway 1 near the crossing on Dunton Road every third one. On the second and fourth Thursdays\, he rests. \nThe series starts under Peckham Arch because there’s shelter against early April rain. Working on site will be one ace professional mechanic\, two amateur but brilliant volunteers and an assortment of people handing out chat\, maps\, info and keeping the queue in order. \nThe mechanics tighten brakes\, sort out clicking gears (aka indexing\, I’m told)\, pump up tyres and give wise advice (“clean that chain”\, “I would buy a new tyre”\, “needs new brake blocks”). It’s all free and everyone is welcome. If anyone tells you we charge\, they are confused. \n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on QW1
DESCRIPTION:Let the Doctor check your bike. The Doctor and his bike health workers will tighten your brakes\, pump up your tyres and index your gears. Never make those strange noises again when you brake or change gear. The doctor likes to be challenged so bring your problems along. \nHis aides and attendants will be handing out literature\, discussing the latest news on bringing safe cycling to the Old Kent Road and gossiping. Everything is free. Everyone is welcome. A good time will be had by all unless it rains in which case I don’t know what we will do. No Bike Marking. Sorry. \n\nThe google map below is more or less right. In practice we will be a little closer to the traffic lights on the opposite corner of Lynton Road to Crol and Co (77 Dunton Road) (excellent cafe). \n\n

SUMMARY:Bike Train and Bike Taxis
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train has fans (lots of them) but we recognise it can’t be perfect for everyone. That’s why we are introducing Bike Taxis. These will be customised rides designed for individuals. For some people the Bike Train just doesn’t work. They don’t work on Wednesdays or they don’t like Blackfriars Bridge. If I’m describing you just get in touch and we will discuss Bike Taxis in greater depth. \nThe Bike Train will still run. It’s a commuter ride leaving out the crush\, the waiting\, the heat and the congestion. We take about 35 minutes to get from Peckham Rye to Blackfriars Bridge and we do not go fast. I’m the pace-setter and I go about 8mph. Occasionally I overtake (small) children but I’m generally overtaken by everyone else. \n\n\n\nCome with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station. The starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds. Today we are using Quietway 1 — London’s first and best Quietway. It runs from Greenwich to Waterloo with spurs to all bridges and it runs close to Peckham and Nunhead. \nWe get to the river about 8.30am and then we can split up depending on which where you are going and which bridge you want to use. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). \n\n\n\nSouthwark Cyclists is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for more\, better cycling in London. Most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Most of us live in Southwark but some of us don’t and you don’t have to. And everything we do is free

SUMMARY:Last Dr Bike under Peckham Arch in 2017
DESCRIPTION:What can I say? The grief\, the despair. Nothing to do but stay at home in the warm and drink. The final opportunity of 2017 to get someone to work on your bike for nothing. They may be grumpier than usual. They may be cold. \nNevertheless they are still good workers. The good Doctor and his attendant bike nurses will fettle your bike. They index gears\, tighten brakes\, pump up your tyres and warn you to clean your chain. Their bike health care assistants have maps\, info\, and lots of local cycling-related gossip. \nAll this for your bike. It’s free. All bikes are welcome. Most of live in Southwark but you don’t have to. As at all the best parties\, there are no rules\, just wander up.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:The dark adds a little romance to Dr Bike as the night’s draw in. It gets cold and wet too so the workers may be huddled together under the Arch to keep warm. SUMMARY:To central London by Bike Taxi and Bike Train
DESCRIPTION:It seems to be just me who finds black cabs romantic. Most people immediately associate them with enormous fares. Anyway Bike Taxi will not be romantic (during working hours at any rate) and they are free. \nThe idea is that your Bike Taxi will take you anywhere you wish to go — any time\, any place — by arrangement. Which means if your Bike Taxi-driver is up for getting you there. So you say what you want to do and we find someone to get you there. Your flexible friend. \n\nThe Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it’s OK that they start at the same time. \nThe starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. Camberwell Grove and Windsor Walk have both been closed since we started so this route keeps getting better. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, up a traffic-calmed back street\, onto the on-pavement cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the still lovely but no longer so new segregation up St George’s Way and Blackfriars Road. All legal and all as safe as your mother would make it. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up \nThe map is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12 \nNota Bene that the bit from Dulwich Village to Denmark Hill only runs for special occasions and subject to bribery (surprisingly small amounts accepted). So if that’s the bit for you let us know asap so that we run it. \n\n\n\nAnd the cycle.travel map is here: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/41005. The info with the map says we do 500m on major roads so it may not know about the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road — and 130m pushing. No pushing. I’m fine to push when required but it’s not required. \n\n\n\n\n\nSouthwark Cyclists is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for more\, better cycling in London. SUMMARY:Dr Bike on QW1
DESCRIPTION:This isn’t a good likeness of Charlie or Andy but you get the idea. What they have in common is that they are good at fixing bikes. Our bike doctors will be indexing gears\, tightening brakes and fixing tyres and their health assistants will be dispensing maps\, cycling info and gossip. \nCharlie and Andy will be working on Quietway 1 at the Dunton Road/Lynton Road lights — near the excellent Crol coffee shop. There’s no shelter in this salubrious spot. The current weather forecast shows fluffy white clouds with sunny rays but that may change. If it changes to rain  the doctor may stay in bed. If not\, she’ll see you there. \n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:The doctor doesn’t look like this\, of course\, and neither do his bike health care assistants. But pictures of cheerful and friendly looking young women improve everything. No cycle marking\, sorry\, we’re working on it. \nThe different looking doctor and bike nurses will be fixing brakes\, indexing gears\, pumping up tyres and offering wise advice. He carries a few (very cheap and very basic) spare parts and tells it how it is. His unmechanical assistants dispense goodwill\, gossip and TfL maps. \nIf that sounds good look for him under Peckham Arch at the north end of Rye Lane/south end of Surrey Canal Path between 5.30-7.30pm. Open to all and all welcome. No charges\, no enquiries into your habits or requests for donations. Free.

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:The meeting is at our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVery respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, left into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nLast time I said that\, sadly\, there was no pub in the area. There is some dispute about this but I have to say I haven’t noticed anywhere to drink. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

SUMMARY:Bike Train for active commuters to central London
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train is a commuter ride leaving out the crush\, the waiting\, the heat and the congestion. \nWe take about 35 minutes to get from Peckham Rye to Blackfriars Bridge and we do not go fast. I’m the pace-setter and I go about 8mph. Occasionally I overtake (small) children but I’m generally overtaken by everyone else. \n\nCome with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:The doctor doesn’t look anything like this of course but it’s a media tradition that everything is improved with a picture of a good looking young woman and why should I resist. \nThe three guys that do all the work are not actually bad to look at especially when they are working on your bike. They index gears\, tighten brakes\, pump up tyres and talk seriously about chain health (chains like being cleaned). Assistants will ply you with maps\, gossip and local cycling-related info until you look so bored they can’t help but notice. \n\nAll this for your bike. It’s free. All bikes are welcome. SUMMARY:Dr Bike comes to Bermondsey
DESCRIPTION:I couldn’t truthfully tell you that this is a good likeness of our bike doctor. In fact I could truthfully tell you that it isn’t. However I could also truthfully tell you that he’s very good at his job and works very hard. \nHe’s coming to Quietway 1 for the first time with supporting bike health workers. With the bike nurses he will be indexing gears\, tightening brakes and pumping up tyres as well as giving wise advice. The doctor likes a challenge so bring your problems along. \nHis aides and attendants will be handing out literature\, discussing the latest news on bringing safe cycling to the Old Kent Road and gossiping. Everything is free. Everyone is welcome. A good time will be had by all unless it rains in which case I don’t know what we will do. \nThe google map below is more or less right. In practice we will be a little closer to the traffic lights on the opposite corner of Lynton Road to Crol and Co (77 Dunton Road) (excellent cafe).

DESCRIPTION:Get your bike checked over and security marked. All free. Mechanics will be tightening brakes\, pumping up tyres and indexing your gears. Never make those strange noises again when you brake or change gear. \nBack in the day the police used to offer Bike Marking for free as part of their fight against crime. They can’t afford to do that now so Team London Bridge are stumping up to offer a bike marking service. \nBest is not to get your bike stolen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxBmfvwJnZM. DESCRIPTION:This is one of London’s largest and little-known parks. There’s 140 acres of it. Cyclists can use it but mysteriously not a lot do. SUMMARY:Talk by Hackney Family Cycling
DESCRIPTION:As part of Southwark Cyclists bid for world domination we have been thinking of copying Hackney. They have a Family Cycling Library of bikes useful for families\, carrying children\, babies\, toddlers\, and lots and lots of shopping — bike seats\, trailers\, cargobikes\, tagalongs and other bits of family cycling equipment – all free to borrow. \nThe picture gives you the idea and shows founder Ruth-Anna Macqueen of Hackney Family Cycling who is coming to our monthly meeting to tell us how she set it up and how it operates. https://hackney.cc/events/hackney-family-cycling-library-launch-and-family-ride/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis meeting is at our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \n \nVery respectable. There is some dispute about this but I have to say I didn’t notice one. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Cycling away from Peckham Library on the Surrey Canal Path. It gets quite a bit busier than this in the rush hours of course. About 1000 cyclists come up here in the morning and one assumes that the same number come back in the evening only slightly more spread out (having gone to the pub\, worked late etc) \nHowever\, you get the idea. Most of us live in Southwark but not all of us and you certainly don’t have to. And you don’t have to pay\, it’s free

SUMMARY:New Members Meet-Up
DESCRIPTION:Cycle campaigning is simpler than you think\, but we need volunteers. \nSouthwark Council and TfL won’t act without evidence that local people want cycling improvements. We need a bigger team to help us build cycling in Southwark and gather evidence that people support Space for Cycling. You can be a resident\, employee or business\, and even 15 minutes of your time will make a difference. \nTo learn more\, why not visit our “New Volunteers Meet-Up” on the 4th of July\, 6.30-8.30pm\, at The Grove pub on Camberwell Grove (formerly the Grand Union). You can drop in for 10 minutes or stay all evening. \nIf you’ve already got an idea but you don’t know how to achieve it\, then come along and we’ll happily give advice. You usually need enthusiasm more than expertise! \nIf you’re interested in helping but you don’t know what to do\, we need individuals and teams of volunteers to do things like: \n– Identify problems on a route\n– Ride a proposed cycle route with Southwark Council planners\n– Write to local councillors\n– Teach a new cyclist a good commuter route\n– Write up a good cycling route for our website\n– Hand out recruitment or campaigning leaflets one morning\n– Add information about local problems to our wiki\n– Help marshal a Dr Bike session and advertise it to passers-by\n– Help load and unload bikes for the Dunwich Dynamo ride\n– Write to politicians about Direct Vision lorries\n– Project manage a group response to a Quietway or Superhighway proposal\n– Help make the proposed Dog Kennel Hill controlled parking zone better for cycling\n– Start organising Autumn Cycle to Work day\n– Run a hackspace\n– Help us to communicate our campaigns better \nA lot of new cycle routes are being proposed by Southwark Council and the Mayor of London – but if we don’t demonstrate enough community support they aren’t going to happen. If you want to know more about potential improvements near you\, come along to the meet up or email southwark “at” lcc.org.uk \np.s. Seeing as you’ve read to the end\, why not answer the one-question Southwark Council Cycle Parking consultation\, if you live in affected streets.
