Note this is a long route with a lot of continuous riding. We will be at our usual easy pace\, but probably cycling for 3 hours +. SUMMARY:Tour de Rotherhithe Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Tour de Rotherhithe Healthy Ride\nNB Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/tour-de-rotherhithe-ride-tickets-732213729977\n \nRotherhithe has a remarkable history. This 2 hour ride takes you on a tour.  Due to of the excellent planning from the late 1980s there are lots of pedestrian/cycle paths and this ride is nearly completely off-road. A great ride for someone relatively new to cycling.  Start/finish point will be Deal Porter Square\, opposite Canada Water Station\, SE16 7AR. Start time 10am and finish 12 noon. Route is: Southwark Park\, King Stairs Gardens\, then Thames path all the way to Deptford Historic Riverside. Along this stretch will pass the departure point of the Mayflower\, the first underwater tunnel anywhere (by Brunel) and the Surrey Docks Farm. From Deptford will head back via the Surrey Canal Linear Park to South Dock\, Greenland Dock and Russia Woodland. Final stop at Stave Hill to admire the view then loop past Surrey Water and along the canal to Canada Water. All this in 10 miles and as a final bonus – this route is entirely without hills! No coffee break as this is a short ride\, but time for a coffee at the end. Bruce leading.  Annotated route map at https://goo.gl/5pFd9b.  Last ridden April 2022\, report here. \nGPX route file: fqmdhodyr_Tour-de-Rotherhithe-Plus (2019_06_27 21_53_24 UTC)

SUMMARY:Burgess Park to Wandsworth and Putney Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Burgess Park to Wandsworth and Putney\nNB Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/burgess-park-to-wandsworth-and-putney-cycle-ride-tickets-728835535707  \nStart/Finish Burgess Park (Fuorvito Cafe\, Chumleigh Gardens\, Off Albany Rd. SE5 0RJ). Start 10am\, finish 1.30pm. Outward route will go via Vauxhall and Battersea Power Station to Battersea Park. Then across the park and on to the nice paths along the Battersea and Wandsworth riverside\, eventually reaching Wandsworth Park. Coffee break in Wandsworth Park during return\, but sadly no time for a round on the well-maintained Crazy Golf Course. If time\, for those who wish to\, will lead a further 1km to have a look at the rowers on the Putney Embankment. Return route has great contrasts. Back along the river to the bridge over Bell Lane Creek\, the mouth of the River Wandle. Then head south into Wandsworth town centre along shared use pavement and across cycle crossings to avoid the traffic on the 1-way system. Next King George’s Park with a nice path by the Wandle. At the south end of the park\, turn left and start heading home via Wandsworth and Clapham Commons. 28km\, a lot of park and riverside is traffic free. Bruce leading. Simon S leading. The route takes in lots of hidden gems\, including the Skip House\, Iliffe Yard artisan workshops\, Royal Surrey Zoological Gardens (Pasley Park)\, a Tangerine Tree\, some WWII stretchers and Del Boy’s Reliant Robin. About 12 miles\, very flat\, taking 2.5 hours – which gives us time for a coffee stop at the Little Cat Café in Myatt’s Field Park.  Will as usual ride as much as possible on quiet streets and paths. We last did this ride in Nov 2021 with the emphasis on flood risk. The sea levels predicted if CO2 targets are missed would mean most of the route would be under water.  Pause for thought…  Route on Google Maps: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1bwtJBZIypO6HXpAGPUrD9QqKhm2xlOw&usp=sharing \nGPX file of route:  Hidden_Peckham to London Bridge loop

Into Kennington to the Three Stags pub\, frequented by Charlie’s father\, followed by the Lambeth Workhouse\, now the Cinema Museum\, with which Charie was well acquainted. Finally 3 more places where Charlie lived and another popular pub. SUMMARY:Tottenham Marshes Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Tottenham Marshes Ride\n\nNB Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-bridge-to-tottenham-marshes-cycle-ride-tickets-715740197197 \nNew route devised by John and Jean. John will be leading.  9.30 start from The Southwark Needle\, SE side of London Bridge.  A round trip of 25miles so we do not expect to be back until 2 – 2.30pm.  Route out to the Marshes will cross the City and pick up Cycleway 1 which is very well signposted along the route. Mostly quiet backstreets and a few cycle paths and passing by the impressive Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Tottenham Marshes form part of the Lee Valley Regional Park and there is a nice pathway through the Marshes which runs in between the Lea River and the Lee Navigation. Return route will follow the Lea Navigation towpath all the way down to the Limehouse cut which will take us to Limehouse basin where we will pick up CS3 to London Bridge.  There will be a coffee stop probably early on the return leg.  This is quite a long ride for us although we are allowing plenty of time so we will be at our usual easy pace. Good idea to bring drinks and snacks

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride through Lambeth’s Small Open Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Ride through Lambeth’s Small Open Spaces\nNB Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycle-ride-through-lambeths-small-open-spaces-tickets-712469163447 > \nSmall parks often have a charm of their own. And we are lucky to have lots of them in London. Most have some individual feature of interest. Some have remarkable activities embedded. This flat\, easy-paced\, 10 mile route includes 12 small parks and also visits 2 larger parks. A mixture of paths\, quiet streets and some short stretches of busy street. \nRide will start (10am) and finish (12.30pm) at Waterloo Millenium Green\, across from The Old Vic. Meet up next to the Baylis St entrance.  Cannot resist starting via the Graffiti Tunnel under Waterloo Station.  Then start the ride proper by  visiting some small parks close to the river\, Archbishop’s Park\, Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens\, Vauxhall Park. Next\, heading a bit inland\, Larkhall Park and on to Wyck Gardens\, Brixton\, home of the Ebony Horse Club\, a Community Riding Centre. Heading back traverse Elam Open space\, Myatts Fields\, Eythorne Park and Kennington Park.  On to Cleaver Square\, then a small diversion to the Beefeater Gin Distillery (sadly no time for a tour)\, the Cinema Museum and its neighbour the house in a water tower.  Briefly into Southwark for Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park (at the moment with unusual Agave plant in flower) and finally back to Waterloo Millenium Green. Coffee break\, perhaps in Myatts Fields. Probable route showing all the parks at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1R6fTBvDP_CWqVtzEhbo-kHtOydWA1ne2&usp=sharing (note this map also includes a longer version going to Battersea Park; we are planning the short version for the 9th)

SUMMARY:London Bridge to Trinity Buoy Wharf and the Royal Docks Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:** This ride is now (22/8) fully booked. You can join the Wait List and hope **\nLondon Bridge to Trinity Buoy Wharf and the Royal Docks\nNOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link- https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-bridge-to-trinity-buoy-wharf-and-the-royal-docks-bike-ride-tickets-703431982997\n \nStart/finish Southwark Needle\, south side London Bridge\, 9.30am. NOTE EARLY START. Amanda leading and aiming to finish around 1pm. We subtitled this ride the first time we did it in 2018 “The New\, The Old and The Derelict”. There is now less of the derelict and more of the new and the route has to change to reflect this. You can read about the 2021 ride here.  In addition the Woolwich Ferry is not working at present and the foot tunnels are unreliable so this year we are using London Bridge to cross the river (Tower Bridge is also closed!). \nThere is much of interest in the East London Docklands. We go over Tower Bridge\, then past Tobacco Dock to WestFerry to connect to Canary Wharf.  Subway & through Old London Wall section (same route for return from here as its prettier than alternatives.)  A loop for Trinity where will have a stop. Then on to Barrier Park North (exit through maze)\, over Connaught Bridge\, past the right hand side of ExCel Centre as they are extending it and riverside is closed. Finally Canning Town\, back to London Wall section and over Tower Bridge. About 15 miles. The image file below shows the track of Amanda’s recce. \nFor those of you who have not visited Trinity Buoy Wharf\, try to get on this ride. Completely unique site with 2 decent cafes and some interesting art. Plus the history related to Trinity House and Michael Faraday.  Coffee stop at Trinity or possibly Prime\, north side Albert Dock next to Connaught Bridge.

SUMMARY:Awayday Healthy Ride to Crab and Winkle Way\, Kent
DESCRIPTION:Awayday Healthy Ride to Crab and Winkle Way\nNOTE. Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:   https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/awayday-ride-to-crab-and-winkle-trail-tickets-685937506547 \nAll day excursion by train with Jamie leading.  Here are his (very) full instructions.  Please read carefully. \n============================================================ \nAwayday ride from Faversham to Canterbury via Whitstable on Saturday 5th Aug 2023 \nThis ride will start from Faversham Station at 10am and is expected to finish at Canterbury by 4.30pm. \nMission\nTo cycle this enjoyable ride in two phases covering a total distance of about 20 miles in all.\nPhase 1 will be to cycle from Faversham to reach the Kent coast at Sea Salter and on to Whitstable beach where we will stop for lunch for an hour. The first stage involves reasonably flat cycling along the stunning Kent coast to Whitstable Bay.\nPhase 2 will be to cycle from Whitstable to Canterbury along the iconic and scenic ‘Crab & Winkle’ disused railway line which involves a few hill climbs on unsurfaced woodland tracks best suited to more confident riders \nCoordinating Instructions and Timings\nRiders will meet at 10.00am sharp on Saturday 5th August at Faversham Station car park where a quick safety brief will be given.\nRiders are advised to book their single rail ticket to Faversham station and their single ticket back to London from either East Canterbury or West Canterbury Station without delay as these destinations become busy at this time of year. \nPlease note that although the ride is estimated to finish in Canterbury by approx. 4.30pm the timings have to remain flexible to mitigate unforeseen mechanical problems etc on the ride.  For those who do not know it\, Canterbury is a stunning city with some fascinating cycle paths in and around the Cathedral Precincts where there are many restaurants\, bars and take aways to suit all needs. Some riders may consider booking a return train that departs an hour or two later should you wish to explore the city further. \nRations and Water\nA brief coffee stop will take place near Faversham.\nWe will stop at approx. 12.30pm for fish & chips etc on Whitstable beach weather permitting (or in the Old Neptune Pub) riders are welcome to bring their own picnics.\nIf time permits we will stop again briefly in Canterbury for a cup of tea before dispersing to train stations which are relatively near each other. \nChecks and Equipment\nDue to the remote nature of our route\, Riders are particularly urged to carry-out or basic pre-check ABC bike serviceability before the event. A = Air in tyres\, B = Brakes\, C= Chain & gears etc as there are no obvious cycle repair shops available on sections of these routes.\nRiders are further advised to bring: water\, fleece\, waterproof top & trousers\, puncture tube canister\, bike lock\, bike pump & cycle lights. \nCommunications\nPlease feel free to contact me with any queries regarding this event or in case of any issues on the day by phone: 07976 803741 or email on jamie.pedrick@outlook.com \n============================================================== \nJamie is leaving it to individual riders to sort out trains.  There are 2 train routes both operated by Southeastern Trains. There is a Victoria to Ramsgate train calling at Faversham at 9.49. This stops at Bromley South. A possible route for people could be to use the Thameslink service to Sevenoaks which goes to Bromley S after calling at the Elephant and Peckham Rye stations.  There is also a St Pancras service calling at Stratford\, might suit riders living north of the river. \nThere is an overtime ban by Aslef in place on the 5th. \nSoutheastern Trains say “The ASLEF union has an overtime ban from 31 July to 5 August\, and from 7 to 12 August. We expect to run our full service during this time.”  You can check here: https://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/travel-information/live-travel-information/industrial-action. \nThameslink say “Travel Advice for Saturday 5 August. We’ll provide further information on this when it becomes available.” Check for updates at https://www.thameslinkrailway.com/travel-information/plan-your-journey/industrial-action \nAs for getting home. Several options from the two Canterbury stations. Check these out a.s.a.p.

This is a bigger and better ride round the many sites used by the BBC from its beginning in 1922 to the present.  9 am start at Southwark Needle (S side of London Bridge\, near LB Station). 7 hr ride with Werner leading. Stops for coffee and lunch so about 6 hours actual riding. Note on long ride like this it is hard to be certain about duration. Assume in planning that we could take 8 hrs and finish may not be before 5pm. Bring water or sports drinks and snacks. We expect to do the lunch stop at the old TV Centre at White City where you can buy food. But feel free to bring a packed lunch.  Route will include Ealing Studios\, BBC Park Western\, White City\, Riverside Studios Hammersmith\, Alexandra Palace\, Langham Place\, Aldwych and Maida Vale (but not in that order!).  Annotated route map at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/BBC101-1.pdf.. \nThis is a considerably longer ride than usual. It also has 530 m of ascending\, concentrated in the second half of the ride.  Average speeds will be at our usual modest pace.  But you will need to be able to maintain this for 6 hours with only one long break. Your bike also needs to be ready for the challenge so check it over\, sort out any niggles and bring a spare inner tube. Annotated route map attached.   We did a 60K version in April. The weather was dire – you can read all about it at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2023/ride-report-19th-april-2023/. \n

SUMMARY:The Full Wandle Trail - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:The Full Wandle Trail\nNOTE. Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-full-wandle-trail-tickets-674377038877 \nThis ride is a nice challenge: ride the entire Wandle Trail on a Saturday morning starting from Southwark (Southwark Needle\, south east side of London Bridge). In fact we are going to cheat a bit by ending the ride at East Croydon Station. So bring your Travel Pass or equivalent to get home by train.  This ride is Amanda’s idea and she will be leading. Total ride distance is 19 miles and we are planning to finish by 2pm following a 9am start. This should allow time for looking around at some of the interesting parts of the Trail and having a coffee break. Parts of the trail are not surfaced and can be quite uneven\, so difficult on narrow wheels with tyres inflated hard. \nRoute outline. Start Southwark Gateway Needle\, SE side London Bridge\, 9am. From London Bridge take Cycleway 10 to Waterloo.  Over Westminster Bridge and along the cycle lane on the embankment to and over Chelsea Bridge and into Battersea Park. Pick up the Thames Path to the start of the trail where the River Wandle meets the Thames.  Nice stretches include Abbey Water Mill\, Morden Hall Park\, Carshalton Ponds and Beddington Park.  Useful guide: http://wandlevalleypark.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Wandle-Trail-Map-Print.pdf. \nWe did this ride for the first time last September and it was a big success. Riders managed to finish at 1.30 well before the projected finish time of 2pm\, see report https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2022/ride-reports-sept-17th-2022/. \nThis ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides\, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.

SUMMARY:Afternoon NHS 75th Anniversary Cycle Ride
DESCRIPTION:Afternoon NHS 75th Anniversary Cycle Ride\nThis is a repeat of the morning ride. Please use Eventbrite to register so we have an idea of numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/afternoon-nhs-75th-anniversary-cycle-ride-tickets-671680653917.  Note this is not the same link as for the morning ride.  Details: \nThis ride is about how the NHS got started. First stop Lloyd George. His Liberal government introduced in 1911 National Insurance for workers. This included free health care. Next the Blue Plaque commemorating Aneurin Bevan\, Minister of Health in the post-war Labour Government that started the NHS in 1948. Finally 2 stops about how the idea of a national health service developed in the first half of the 20th century. Southwark played a key role. An outstanding figure was Dr Alfred Salter\, a socialist who practiced medicine in the borough from 1900 and whose campaigning on many social issues led to his becoming MP from 1922-1945. He and his family are commemorated by statues on the Bermondsey waterfront. Before this a stop at a plain 1937 building on Grange Rd. This is still an NHS Centre\, but started as a local authority-run public health centre\, the first in the country. Local authorities increasingly ran accessible heath centres in the 1930s. \n12 mile\, 2.5 hour ride\, Bruce leading. Easy paced ride\, but note there are some busy stretches of road on this route.
