SUMMARY:Dr Bike on Quietway 1
DESCRIPTION:The last Dr Bike of the season. Sad. Let’s hope it’s not raining because there’s no shelter at our workplace — and it will be getting dark by the end of it too. \nFour mechanics\, one pro and three ace amateurs\, will be mending bikes\, indexing gears\, tightening brakes\, pumping up tyres\, fixing that squeak and telling you why your back wheel wobbles. We don’t carry parts but if you bring brake pads we can fit them. Use our oil. Listen to our wise advice and ask tricky bike-questions. I’ve learned a lot just by listening. \nWe have bike maps\, local gossip to give as well as receive. Everyone is welcome. Everything is free. THERE IS NO CATCH. Our user reviews report excellent value for money. \nWe are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which works for safe\, enjoyable cycling in London. You don’t need to be a member or live in Southwark. Everything we do is free and as welcoming as we can make it.

SUMMARY:Funeral for the Unknown Cyclist - Pedal on Parliament
DESCRIPTION:This is a  national cycling and walking protest & die-in against the government & Parliament before the autumn budget. It’s organised by Stop Killing Cyclists\, who base their approach on the very successful Stop the Child Murders die-ins in Holland\, during the early 70s\, which were the catalyst for the transformation of Holland into  the most bike-friendly country in the world. If you’ve ever ridden a bike in The Netherlands\, you’ll know how far we have to go..\n\n\n\n\nThe protest is to condemn all existing and previous governments from all the major parties for their failure to take comprehensive action on safer cycling. It calls for £3 billion a year to be invested in a national protected cycling network and no more tax cuts for fuel. These cuts are damaging our children’s lungs for life and shortening lives.\n\n\n\nWe have some of the lowest levels of cycling investment in Europe and the highest levels of childhood obesity We need urgent action to tackle these problems and investment in cycling is one of the best.\n\nThere’s a feeder ride to the protest which will pass by Crol coffee shop at the Dunton Road/Lynton Road lights on QW1. Join Jane Dent for a coffee and then join the ride at 11.25am to Webber St and pick up more people at the corner of CS6 Blackfriars Rd at 11.40am. Or join the protest at midday in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. At 1pm the procession starts and from 2-3pm there’s a rally and die-in at the Treasury\, Parliament Square.\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:The headline is not entirely accurate. As so often — it’s a lot more complicated than that. If it is raining the mechanics will be under the Arch\, sheltering. If it is not raining and looks reasonably likely to stay that way they may well be at the foot of the steps beside the ramp. SUMMARY:Dr Bike on Quietway 1
DESCRIPTION:This is Mike. He stopped by one day\, joined in and since then has turned up every time. I’m told that his day job is re-designing the world to make it more bike friendly. A big job but he will be up to it. \nWith Charlie\, Bruno and Andy he makes up the Dr Bike problem-solving team. They do the straightforward stuff: tightening brakes\, indexing gears\, pumping up tyres and giving wise advice (“That chain needs cleaning”) (“Do you ever check your tyres?”). Embarrassing stuff like that. \nBut what they really like is a difficult problem. One they can all go into a huddle about. Let’s hope it’s not your bike that brings a huddle on. \nThe ground rules are that there aren’t very many ground rules. It’s all free. Everyone is welcome\, you don’t have to live anywhere or belong to anything. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign and this is just a bit of what we do. \nYou can find us on QW1 at the Dunton Road/Lynton Road traffic lights just across the road from Cafe Crol (see pic below) including fine heritage bike stands)

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:These hands have been working. Put them to work on your bike. They belong to Mike who is one of the three volunteer mechanics led by ace-pro Charlie who make up the Dr Bike team. \nThey will tighten your brakes\, index your gears and pump up your tyres. All the easy stuff. Speak nicely to them and they will also think about your bottom bracket\, sort out your spokes\, fix that squeak and tell you why your back wheel wobbles. We don’t carry parts but if you bring brake pads we can fit them. Use our oil. Listen to our wise advice and ask tricky bike-questions. I’ve learned a lot just by listening. \nThere’s no particular point to any of this apart from making bikes better and being nice to one another. The guys just like doing stuff with their hands. Fixing bikes is their thing. \n\nWe have bike maps\, local gossip to give as well as receive. Everyone is welcome. We are the Southwark Branch of the London Cycling Campaign and everything we do is free.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:This is Andy\, the brain behind all this free bike maintenance. Cyclists cycle 120 miles to Dunwich on the east coast in the light of the full moon and collapse on Dunwich Beach as the sun rises. Those who don’t feel like cycling the 120 miles back\, climb on a coach and wake up in Surrey Quays. Andy organises those coaches and the profit funds Dr Bike. \nAndy with Bruno and Mike makes up the three volunteers who support ace pro-mechanic Charlie (for pic see July 5th). Together they fix brakes\, index gears\, pump up tyres and knowledgeably discuss bottom brackets. They often but not always carry small parts so it’s best to bring them yourself if you know or suspect that you need them. \nEverything is free. You don’t need to live in Southwark or be a member of anything at all. There isn’t a catch that I’ve come across. People sometimes ask why we’re doing this and TBH I’m not entirely sure but we have a good time and everyone seems pleased with the results. \nYou can find us in Peckham Square between Peckham Pulse and Peckham Library. Assuming that you are going south we will be just before you get to Peckham Arch (which  looks like this): \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Freecycle Ride to central London
DESCRIPTION:We are leading a ride to the London Freecycle which is a brilliant opportunity to get the whole family together to experience the fun and freedom of cycling on traffic-free roads in central London. It’s part of a festival of cycling led by the Mayor of London. Bits of it are remarkably silly. \n \nThe route takes in the Strand and Lincoln’s Inn Fields and returns to the Victoria Embankment\, taking in a section of the newly opened East-West Cycle Superhighway (CS3). This eight-mile circuit passes all the landmarks most people have heard of — Buckingham Palace\, Trafalgar Square\, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England. It even goes south of the river to places some people haven’t heard of like Waterloo. \nOur feeder ride starts at 10am outside the cafe in Peckham Rye Park. At this point I should warn you that the cafe may not look like a cafe because it is closed for renovations. Plus the path in front of the cafe which is called Strakers Road (because it used to be a road) is not named on Google maps. So we meet at a cafe that’s sadly closed\, on a path with a little known name. I hope that’s clear. The postcode is SE15 3UA. \nThe ride has set off surprisingly punctually in the past. It’s slow because I am glad to say that lots of kids come. Many of them are faster than me but not all. \nThere will be a pick up point under Peckham Arch near the Pulse and the Library and another at 10.30am by the Park Life Cafe in Burgess Park. The official address of the cafe is 3 Chumleigh St\, SE5 0RJ. Another way of thinking about it is that it is beside the big playground just off the Albany Road and has lots of toddler-sized fountains outside it. \nThis (by now very large) group will join the Freecycle route at Southwark Bridge and there will be a ride back to Peckham from there at 3pm. Everyone welcome. It’s a great fun day. You can register beforehand here: https://app.realbuzzregistrations.com/events/lmel/2018-prl-freecycle/login/ and you will be sent tabards and numbers. You don’t need either. The numbers enable you to find and download any pix the official photographers take of you. You can put the numbers on your bike or not. \nYou can register with the Pru\, you can register with us on southwark@lcc.org.uk or you can not register at all. Everyone welcome.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on QW1
DESCRIPTION:This is Andy\, boss of Southwark Cyclists and the man who makes the money that pays Dr Bike. With Charlie (see July 5th) Bruno and Mike he’s part of the Dr Bike team. “Four great guys” as one satisfied customer said. Only three today because Bruno is on holiday. \nThey index your gears\, tighten your brakes\, diagnose that squeak and give advice on treatment for your hub gears and bottom bracket. The supporting cast keeps the queue in order (it doesn’t last long but it does build up sometimes) and dispenses maps\, gossip and cheerful chat. \nYou can find us at the crossroads of Lynton Road and Dunton Road. SUMMARY:Bike Taxi
DESCRIPTION:This is part of our series of personalised rides which do what it says on the tin and escort riders to where they want to go — within reason folks\, within reason. To arrange one for yourself or your BF contact southwark@lcc.org.uk. \nThis one goes from East Dulwich station to the Tower of London. There are routes to do it which don’t involve going over Tower Bridge but the escorted cyclist chose to look her fears in the eye. Tower Bridge is not as scary as it looks because the ferocious speed control on the bridge itself keeps the motors under control — it’s the junctions at either end of it which can feel less enjoyable and we shall be keeping those to a minimum. \nTo join or arrange a different one\, contact the email address above or text 07842 640 207. \n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on Quietway 1
DESCRIPTION:Our team of four is led by professional mechanic Charlie\, with three ace amateurs\, Andy\, Mike and Bruno. Andy co-ordinates Southwark Cyclists (I’m not sure what that means but I think it must be a bit like herding cats) and Bruno co-ordinates HMG (ditto) \nWhen Andy\, Mike and Bruno are baffled\, I’m afraid they pass you on to the queue for Charlie but then you will definitely get the best advice cycling experience and hard-earned knowledge can provide. \nWith his assistants Charlie can index your gears\, tighten your brakes\, diagnose that squeak and give advice on treatment for your hub gears and bottom bracket. SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:Peckham Arch looks like this but with a lot (a lot) more cars\, buses\, lorries and\, of course\, cyclists. The sky isn’t blue all the time either. The Arch is due to be demolished and the site turned into houses. It was due to be shut in the autumn of 2017 since legally it has to be shut before it’s pulled down. But so far that hasn’t happened and until it does we will be holding a Dr Bike underneath it on the first Thursday of every month. \nThree mechanics\, one pro and two ace amateurs\, will be mending bikes\, indexing gears\, tightening brakes\, pumping up tyres\, fixing that squeak and telling you why your back wheel wobbles. When they are baffled\, I’m afraid they pass you on to the queue for Charlie but then you will definitely get the best advice cycling experience and hard-earned knowledge can provide. \nWith his assistants Charlie can index your gears\, tighten your brakes\, diagnose that squeak and give advice on treatment for your hub gears and bottom bracket. The supporting cast keeps the queue in order (it doesn’t last long but it does build up sometimes) and dispense maps\, gossip and cheerful chat. \nEverything is free. We don’t carry parts so if you know (or suspect) that you need new brake blocks or cables it’s best to bring them. There are no restrictions. You don’t have to join anything or sign anything. Occasionally people ask what the catch is. We’re still working that out. See you there.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:I know he looks a bit mad but he’s very good with bikes. Assuming Peckham Arch is still sheltering all-comers\, Dr Bike will be under the Arch indexing gears\, pumping up tyres\, tightening brakes and giving wise advice on filthy chains (“clean it” would be a printable precis) \nNothing costs anything. The wise advice is naturally free. One professional mechanic and two first-class amateurs. Maps\, chat\, cycling gossip. I’m afraid there is sometimes a queue but they clear it quickly. \nThere must be more to it than that. Er\, no there isn’t. We don’t make a profit. You don’t have to join anything\, sign anything or do anything more than let the goodwill roll over you. Wave as you go by.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on QW1
DESCRIPTION:Isn’t she gorgeous? None of our actually Bike Doctors look like this\, I’m sorry to have to tell you\, so this picture is just an opportunist stunt to stick in a girlie pic. Our Dr Bikes are all male (very male you may feel when you meet them)\, married (irrelevant) and fully clothed (be grateful). \nThey will be bike-doctoring on Quietway 1 on the third Thursday of every month starting today (April 19th). The unreliability of the number of Thursday in any particular month means that this arrangement will appear to jump about a bit but the general pattern will be one Thursday a month. \nWe will be on the Lynton Road/Dunton Road traffic lights — Crol coffee-shop might be a better signpost. It’s on the corner. We will be on a different corner where there are lights\, space but no shelter from the rain. What we will do in the rain has not been decided yet. Maybe retire to Crol. \nWe bring one professional mechanic called Charlie and two amateurs called Bruno and Andy. All staff are chosen for top-notchness except the hangers-on who give out maps\, wave their arms around and try to remember who is next in the queue. They are pretty second-rate. \nDon’t let anyone tell you that you will have to pay. You don’t. Or that you have to belong to the London Cycling Campaign. You don’t. We sort out bikes’ niggles\, brakes\, gears and tyres. We give wise advice “clean that chain” ” pump up this tyre more often” but we don’t carry spare parts. If you want simple stuff fitted like brake pads\, bring them with you. \nToodle-oo

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:Doesn’t look like your average GP\, does he? Certainly the screwdriver and the spanner would worry me if my doctor whipped them out. The mad glare doesn’t help either. But more calmly now. Fear not. Dr Bike is returning from his winter sleep. He reckons that by April it will be safe to come out from under the covers. He will be under Peckham Arch on the first Thursday of every month and on Quietway 1 near the crossing on Dunton Road every third one. On the second and fourth Thursdays\, he rests. \nThe series starts under Peckham Arch because there’s shelter against early April rain. Working on site will be one ace professional mechanic\, two amateur but brilliant volunteers and an assortment of people handing out chat\, maps\, info and keeping the queue in order. \nThe mechanics tighten brakes\, sort out clicking gears (aka indexing\, I’m told)\, pump up tyres and give wise advice (“clean that chain”\, “I would buy a new tyre”\, “needs new brake blocks”). It’s all free and everyone is welcome. If anyone tells you we charge\, they are confused. \n

DESCRIPTION:Let the Doctor check your bike. The Doctor and his bike health workers will tighten your brakes\, pump up your tyres and index your gears. Never make those strange noises again when you brake or change gear. The doctor likes to be challenged so bring your problems along. \nHis aides and attendants will be handing out literature\, discussing the latest news on bringing safe cycling to the Old Kent Road and gossiping. Everything is free. Everyone is welcome. A good time will be had by all unless it rains in which case I don’t know what we will do. No Bike Marking. Sorry. \n\nThe google map below is more or less right. In practice we will be a little closer to the traffic lights on the opposite corner of Lynton Road to Crol and Co (77 Dunton Road) (excellent cafe). \n\n

SUMMARY:Bike Train and Bike Taxis
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train has fans (lots of them) but we recognise it can’t be perfect for everyone. That’s why we are introducing Bike Taxis. These will be customised rides designed for individuals. For some people the Bike Train just doesn’t work. They don’t work on Wednesdays or they don’t like Blackfriars Bridge. If I’m describing you just get in touch and we will discuss Bike Taxis in greater depth. \nThe Bike Train will still run. It’s a commuter ride leaving out the crush\, the waiting\, the heat and the congestion. We take about 35 minutes to get from Peckham Rye to Blackfriars Bridge and we do not go fast. I’m the pace-setter and I go about 8mph. Occasionally I overtake (small) children but I’m generally overtaken by everyone else. \n\n\n\nCome with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station. The starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds. Today we are using Quietway 1 — London’s first and best Quietway. It runs from Greenwich to Waterloo with spurs to all bridges and it runs close to Peckham and Nunhead. \nWe get to the river about 8.30am and then we can split up depending on which where you are going and which bridge you want to use. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). \n\n\n\nSouthwark Cyclists is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for more\, better cycling in London. Most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Most of us live in Southwark but some of us don’t and you don’t have to. And everything we do is free

SUMMARY:Last Dr Bike under Peckham Arch in 2017
DESCRIPTION:What can I say? The grief\, the despair. Nothing to do but stay at home in the warm and drink. The final opportunity of 2017 to get someone to work on your bike for nothing. They may be grumpier than usual. They may be cold. \nNevertheless they are still good workers. The good Doctor and his attendant bike nurses will fettle your bike. They index gears\, tighten brakes\, pump up your tyres and warn you to clean your chain. Their bike health care assistants have maps\, info\, and lots of local cycling-related gossip. \nAll this for your bike. It’s free. All bikes are welcome. SUMMARY:To central London by Bike Taxi and Bike Train
DESCRIPTION:It seems to be just me who finds black cabs romantic. Most people immediately associate them with enormous fares. Anyway Bike Taxi will not be romantic (during working hours at any rate) and they are free. \nThe idea is that your Bike Taxi will take you anywhere you wish to go — any time\, any place — by arrangement. Which means if your Bike Taxi-driver is up for getting you there. So you say what you want to do and we find someone to get you there. Your flexible friend. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it’s OK that they start at the same time. \nThe starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. Camberwell Grove and Windsor Walk have both been closed since we started so this route keeps getting better. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, up a traffic-calmed back street\, onto the on-pavement cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the still lovely but no longer so new segregation up St George’s Way and Blackfriars Road. All legal and all as safe as your mother would make it. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up \nThe map is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12 \nNota Bene that the bit from Dulwich Village to Denmark Hill only runs for special occasions and subject to bribery (surprisingly small amounts accepted). So if that’s the bit for you let us know asap so that we run it. \n\n\n\nAnd the cycle.travel map is here: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/41005. The info with the map says we do 500m on major roads so it may not know about the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road — and 130m pushing. No pushing. DESCRIPTION:This isn’t a good likeness of Charlie or Andy but you get the idea. What they have in common is that they are good at fixing bikes. Our bike doctors will be indexing gears\, tightening brakes and fixing tyres and their health assistants will be dispensing maps\, cycling info and gossip. \nCharlie and Andy will be working on Quietway 1 at the Dunton Road/Lynton Road lights — near the excellent Crol coffee shop. DESCRIPTION:The doctor doesn’t look like this\, of course\, and neither do his bike health care assistants. But pictures of cheerful and friendly looking young women improve everything. No cycle marking\, sorry\, we’re working on it. \nThe different looking doctor and bike nurses will be fixing brakes\, indexing gears\, pumping up tyres and offering wise advice. He carries a few (very cheap and very basic) spare parts and tells it how it is. His unmechanical assistants dispense goodwill\, gossip and TfL maps. \nIf that sounds good look for him under Peckham Arch at the north end of Rye Lane/south end of Surrey Canal Path between 5.30-7.30pm. SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:The meeting is at our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVery respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, left into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nLast time I said that\, sadly\, there was no pub in the area. There is some dispute about this but I have to say I haven’t noticed anywhere to drink. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

SUMMARY:Bike Train for active commuters to central London
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train is named after the Brighton Bike Train which took students along the A23 from their halls of residence far away to their places of learning in the town. It’s a commuter ride leaving out the crush\, the waiting\, the heat and the congestion. \nWe take about 35 minutes to get from Peckham Rye to Blackfriars Bridge and we do not go fast. I’m the pace-setter and I go about 8mph. Occasionally I overtake (small) children but I’m generally overtaken by everyone else. \n\nCome with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. No pushing. I’m fine to push when required but it’s not required. \n\n\n\n\n\nSouthwark Cyclists is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for more\, better cycling in London. Most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Most of us live in Southwark but some of us don’t and you don’t have to. And everything we do is free

SUMMARY:Dr Bike
DESCRIPTION:Put these tools to work on your bike. We are part of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns to make London safer for cyclists (what could be better?). Most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Most of live in Southwark but you don’t have to. As at all the best parties\, there are no rules\, just wander up.
