DESCRIPTION:Who was Passmore Edwards?\nNOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link below. \nAs in recent years\, the Healthy Rides are having a special all day ride for the bank holiday. \nEaster Monday Ride. April 6th 2026. Who was Passmore Edwards? < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/who-was-passmore-edwards-tickets-1986202397839?aff=oddtdtcreator > \nJohn Passmore Edwards (1823-1911) was a journalist\, publisher\, MP\nand philanthropist who left a lasting legacy in London. Principally his libraries\, several of which still exist\, but also hospitals and drinking fountains. Werner has researched a route that will visit as many sites as possible in an all-day\, 2-part ride on Easter Monday\, April 6th. \nMeet at London Bridge (Southwark Gateway Needle\, south side) at 9am (note early time). Morning will cover north of the river cycling a 40km loop including Bow Library\, East Ham Hospital and  Canning Town Boys Club.  After a lunch break at about 1.30 continue with a 20km south of the river circuit down to Dulwich (Passmore Edwards Library)\, South London Art Gallery and Wells Way Public Baths. Estimated finish at London Bridge at 3.30pm. \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.  Remember things can\, and do\, happen on bike rides and we sometimes get delayed. It is therefore advised not to schedule anything to immediately follow the expected end time. This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides\, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.

SUMMARY:Woodberry Wetlands Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Woodberry Wetlands Healthy Ride\nYou must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-bridge-to-woodberry-wetlands-ride-tickets-1984547522061?aff=oddtdtcreator \nWoodberry Wetlands is a haven for wildlife in North London: 11 hectares of reed-fringed ponds and dykes There and back makes an excellent 11-mile\, 3 hour ride. Jacqui is leading\, starting from The Southwark Needle\, London Bridge\, south side. Route will pick up Cycleway 14 and cross river at Southwark bridge. Through the City and follow C11\, then C1. Return via Clissold Park then C1 back to the starting point on London Bridge. Time for a comfort stop at the Coal House café in the Wetlands. To access the café we will have to walk our bikes along the boardwalk.  Queue for coffee etc may be long\, so perhaps bring snacks and drink. Mostly quiet streets but possibly a bit busy in the City on our return. Traffic free in the Wetlands where the path is narrow and shared with pedestrians and runners\, so please give way when necessary. The surface there is compacted gravel. Numbers will be restricted to 10 (including Ride Leader) as a big group would be difficult (and unpopular) in the Nature reserve. So please only register when you are sure you will be able to attend. \nGeneral Info. Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. SUMMARY:Waterlink Way Healthy Ride from Canada Water
DESCRIPTION:Waterlink Way Healthy Ride from Canada Water\nPlease register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/waterllink-way-cycle-ride-from-canada-water-tickets-1981014568903?aff=oddtdtcreator \nWork is starting in February to replace the worn out bridge at the start of the Waterlink Way (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DTabTFPjP-l/).  This means the Waterlink Way will effectively be closed for 3 months. Bruce will lead a last WW ride before the closure. Meet 10am at Deal Porter Square (next to Canada Water Library\, opposite CW Station) and take the Windrush Line ( ex-Overground) to Sydenham. Taking bikes on these trains is surprisingly easy especially at step free stations like Canada Water and Sydenham. We will then ride back to Canada Water arriving about 12.30. Can also join at Sydenham Station at 10.25am; please indicate on Eventbrite if you intend to do this.  NOTE this is Sydenham Station\, not Lower Sydenham or Sydenham Hill. \nRoute back at https://goo.gl/4DQ9Tb.  Down to Bells Green and join the Waterlink Way (Nat Route 21). Follow this excellent off-road path to Ladywell Fields\, then continue to Brookmill Park. Use the new segregated lane on Deptford Church St and get back to Canada Water on either Cycleway 10 or 4. Easy 1.5 – 2 hour ride back with lots of off road path. Remember to bring card or equivalent (fare £2:10). Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-great-river-race-by-bike-tickets-1706854871869?aff=oddtdtcreator\nThe aim is to follow the Great River Race from start to finish. Around 300 human-powered craft take part in this race every year\, craft of all shapes and sizes heading up with the tide from Millwall Slip to Ham\, a bit from Richmond. We will start from Canada Water (next to Canada Water Library\, opposite Canada Water Station) at 10am with Cap’n Jamie in charge. Ride first to a good point near South Dock to watch the first boats start. Then ride upstream stopping at several points. We hope to reach Richmond\, near the finish\, by 2pm. Please note this is a very approximate finish time. Do not come on this ride if you need to be finished promptly. We will guide riders to Richmond Station to get transport back.\nIt may well be a bit chaotic but will be fun. Route is 21 miles\, so be prepared. Check and lube your bike\, bring water\, snacks\, suitable clothing\, spare inner tube etc. At present the forecast is dry. SUMMARY:Upminster to Southend Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Upminster to Southend Healthy Ride\nNOTE. Please register for the ride on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/upminster-to-southend-cycle-ride-tickets-1526787856579?aff=oddtdtcreator \nThe ride starts at Upminster library at 9.30am. We head East into the Essex countryside. Our first stop at 11 miles is Langdon Discovery Centre (Essex Wildlife Trust).  Our second stop at 20 miles is at Hadley Park café.  At 25.5 miles is Southend seafront our destination and our lunch break.  Aim to be at Southend by 12.30. Give ourselves an hour for lunch and set off back at 1.30. Those that want to leave the ride at this point can catch the c2c train from Southend Central back to London. Trains run every 20 minutes.  The journey back traces much of the route outbound but we will have only one stop roughly half way at the Langdon Discovery Centre. We’ll then return to Upminster library after a short break aiming to arrive there about 4.30. \nUpminster station is step free. In Zone 6\, longish journey on District line (e.g. Monument\, 42min\, £3.70). Bit quicker on c2c from Fenchurch St\, 22min\, £3.80). Upminster Library is 400m south of the station\, mostly along busy Station Road.  GPX route map:.Upminster_to_Southend_3 \nPersonal memories of Southend from Ride Leader Owen \nI remember as a 9 year old boy\, a recent immigrant from Hong Kong with virtually no English\, being woken up in the middle of a cold winter’s night to go fishing. After wiping the sleep from my eyes I joined my father and our compassionate elderly neighbour\, a keen fisherman\, to drive down to Southend to fish off the end of the pier.  Still in pitch darkness we dropped lines with about half a dozen hooks on each line into the water. When the tide came in we pulled in our lines and there were two\, three\, four flat fish on each line. \nFish were plentiful in those days and the town was a major holiday destination. Southend today may not glisten the way it used to but on sunny summer weekends thousands of day trippers still pack the promenades. You hear Chubby Chequer being belted out from arcades along with the ping\, ping\, ping sound of pinball machines and the occasional crashing of coins as a lucky punter registers a winning line on the fruit machine. You hear choruses of screaming from those on fairground rides. Every kid seems to be holding a candy floss or an ice cream cone and every adult has a big grin on their face.  Best of all is the ubiquitous seductive aroma of fish and chips with lashings of malt vinegar and pickled onions wafting along the seafront.\nSouthend seafront is still an amazing place to visit. Southend still touches my heart.\nWhat are your memories of Southend? Better still join me on my bike ride from Upminster to Southend and back. \nGeneral Information.   \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Southwark Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.   Remember finish times are approximate and it is best not to schedule something immediately after the ride; give yourself an allowance for mechanical or other problems on the ride. \nThese rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides\, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/. \nNote. Reports of previous rides\, often with photos and route maps\, are posted to the Southwark Cyclists web site\, yearly index at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.  Future/provisional ride plans can be viewed on our planning spreadsheet. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Peckham Rye Park to Chinbrook Meadows - Ravensbourne and Quaggy Rivers Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Peckham Rye Park to Chinbrook Meadows – Ravensbourne and Quaggy Rivers\nPlease register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/small-se-london-rivers-peckham-rye-park-to-chinbrook-meadows-cycle-ride-tickets-819208403387 \nNew route devised by Bruce who will be leading.  Will take us on an 18 mile loop through SE London that is focussed on the Ravensbourne River and its tributary\, the Quaggy River. These rivers spend much of their time out of sight in narrow concrete culverts. But occasionally they are released and form attractive landscape features and wildlife habitats. The route includes 3 such areas\, Brookmill Park\, Sutcliffe Park and Chinbrook Meadows. \nRide will start at the Peckham Rye Park Café (The Round\, Straker’s Rd.\, SE15 3UA). Note NOT our usual Peckham starting point.  Begin by heading up to Nunhead then down to Brookmill Park. From there we will ride to Lewisham where the confluence of the Ravensbourne and the Quaggy lies amongst the new buildings next to Lewisham Station. The main part of the ride will then follow the Quaggy to Sutcliffe Park in Kidbrooke and on to Chinbrook Meadows near Grove Park.  The route then heads west to find the Ravensbourne as it exits Beckenham Place Park and we finally head back to Peckham Rye Park via Bellingham\, Ladywell Fields and Nunhead. \nTotal distance is 29 km (18 miles) and we climb up to Nunhead twice. Am allowing 4½ hours\, starting at 9.30 am and finishing around 2pm.  We will have a Cafe break but bring drink and snacks.  And make sure your bike and your legs are in tip top condition!  Route map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1Lo1Rx-SH5AdrXu13iX1vCm5CtizXXvI&usp=sharing.

Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:   https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/awayday-ride-to-crab-and-winkle-trail-tickets-685937506547 \nAll day excursion by train with Jamie leading.  Here are his (very) full instructions.  Please read carefully. \n============================================================ \nAwayday ride from Faversham to Canterbury via Whitstable on Saturday 5th Aug 2023 \nThis ride will start from Faversham Station at 10am and is expected to finish at Canterbury by 4.30pm. \nMission\nTo cycle this enjoyable ride in two phases covering a total distance of about 20 miles in all.\nPhase 1 will be to cycle from Faversham to reach the Kent coast at Sea Salter and on to Whitstable beach where we will stop for lunch for an hour. The first stage involves reasonably flat cycling along the stunning Kent coast to Whitstable Bay.\nPhase 2 will be to cycle from Whitstable to Canterbury along the iconic and scenic ‘Crab & Winkle’ disused railway line which involves a few hill climbs on unsurfaced woodland tracks best suited to more confident riders \nCoordinating Instructions and Timings\nRiders will meet at 10.00am sharp on Saturday 5th August at Faversham Station car park where a quick safety brief will be given.\nRiders are advised to book their single rail ticket to Faversham station and their single ticket back to London from either East Canterbury or West Canterbury Station without delay as these destinations become busy at this time of year. \nPlease note that although the ride is estimated to finish in Canterbury by approx. 4.30pm the timings have to remain flexible to mitigate unforeseen mechanical problems etc on the ride.  For those who do not know it\, Canterbury is a stunning city with some fascinating cycle paths in and around the Cathedral Precincts where there are many restaurants\, bars and take aways to suit all needs. Some riders may consider booking a return train that departs an hour or two later should you wish to explore the city further. \nRations and Water\nA brief coffee stop will take place near Faversham.\nWe will stop at approx. 12.30pm for fish & chips etc on Whitstable beach weather permitting (or in the Old Neptune Pub) riders are welcome to bring their own picnics.\nIf time permits we will stop again briefly in Canterbury for a cup of tea before dispersing to train stations which are relatively near each other. \nChecks and Equipment\nDue to the remote nature of our route\, Riders are particularly urged to carry-out or basic pre-check ABC bike serviceability before the event. A = Air in tyres\, B = Brakes\, C= Chain & gears etc as there are no obvious cycle repair shops available on sections of these routes.\nRiders are further advised to bring: water\, fleece\, waterproof top & trousers\, puncture tube canister\, bike lock\, bike pump & cycle lights. \nCommunications\nPlease feel free to contact me with any queries regarding this event or in case of any issues on the day by phone: 07976 803741 or email on jamie.pedrick@outlook.com \n============================================================== \nJamie is leaving it to individual riders to sort out trains.  There are 2 train routes both operated by Southeastern Trains. There is a Victoria to Ramsgate train calling at Faversham at 9.49. This stops at Bromley South. A possible route for people could be to use the Thameslink service to Sevenoaks which goes to Bromley S after calling at the Elephant and Peckham Rye stations.  There is also a St Pancras service calling at Stratford\, might suit riders living north of the river. \nThere is an overtime ban by Aslef in place on the 5th. \nSoutheastern Trains say “The ASLEF union has an overtime ban from 31 July to 5 August\, and from 7 to 12 August. We expect to run our full service during this time.”  You can check here: https://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/travel-information/live-travel-information/industrial-action. \nThameslink say “Travel Advice for Saturday 5 August. We’ll provide further information on this when it becomes available.” Check for updates at https://www.thameslinkrailway.com/travel-information/plan-your-journey/industrial-action \nAs for getting home. Several options from the two Canterbury stations. Check these out a.s.a.p.

SUMMARY:BBC Centenary 80K Ride
DESCRIPTION:BBC Centenary 80K Ride\nNOTE. Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link below.  Also note this is a special Sunday ride starting at 9am. \nBBC Centenary 80K. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bbc-century-80k-bike-ride-tickets-676636507007 > \nSunday July 23rd. Last October saw the BBC become 100 years old and we did a 60K ride to celebrate with terrible weather and few riders. This is a bigger and better ride round the many sites used by the BBC from its beginning in 1922 to the present.  9 am start at Southwark Needle (S side of London Bridge\, near LB Station). 7 hr ride with Werner leading. Stops for coffee and lunch so about 6 hours actual riding. Note on long ride like this it is hard to be certain about duration. Assume in planning that we could take 8 hrs and finish may not be before 5pm. Bring water or sports drinks and snacks. We expect to do the lunch stop at the old TV Centre at White City where you can buy food. But feel free to bring a packed lunch.  Route will include Ealing Studios\, BBC Park Western\, White City\, Riverside Studios Hammersmith\, Alexandra Palace\, Langham Place\, Aldwych and Maida Vale (but not in that order!).  Annotated route map at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/BBC101-1.pdf.. \nThis is a considerably longer ride than usual. It also has 530 m of ascending\, concentrated in the second half of the ride.  Average speeds will be at our usual modest pace.  But you will need to be able to maintain this for 6 hours with only one long break. Your bike also needs to be ready for the challenge so check it over\, sort out any niggles and bring a spare inner tube. Annotated route map attached.   We did a 60K version in April. The weather was dire – you can read all about it at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2023/ride-report-19th-april-2023/. \n

DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/boat-race-course-cycle-ride-tickets-405412077437 \nThis ride will be led by Jamie. As Jamie says: “We last did the Boat Race ride on 2nd April when it was unpleasantly cold with a bitter east wind in our faces. One hopes that late August will be more forgiving.” The long range forecast is much better\, 22 degrees\, sunny intervals\, gentle breeze. Here are the detailed instructions.  Note also that this ride does not involve any trains. These have proved very unreliable recently… \nMission To cycle the iconic 4.25 mile Boat Race route from Putney to Chiswick Bridge. \nRoute  Riders should note that this is predominantly a relaxed and social event that involves some enjoyable cycling in stages for about 22 miles in all. 80% of our route is on quieter roads and unsurfaced river paths. This circular route is predominantly flat and thus suitable for all types of bicycles and most rider abilities. There will be loo stops along the route.\nFrom Waterloo Station the ride will follow the river path west to reach the start at Putney embankment. From Putney we will stay on the south side of the river and head to Mortlake before crossing the river by the finish post at Chiswick Bridge. We will then follow the river back down the north river side passing Chiswick Eyot\, Hammersmith Bridge and the Fulham Palace on our return to Waterloo Station which should be approximately 4.30pm. \nCoordinating Instructions and Timings  Riders will meet at 10.00am on Saturday 2nd April at the bottom of the steps outside and under the Waterloo Station Victory Arch that is 50 yards up on the right from where York Road meets Mepham Street and Cab Road just before the road bridge. A Riders safety briefing will be given at 10.00am. \nRations and Water  Our first coffee stop will be at Putney embankment around 11.00 am where we will stop for about 30 minutes. We will stop for lunch around 12.30 at The Ship Inn at Chiswick Bridge south side overlooking the River. Riders are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch/snack should they wish.  Time permitting we will also stop at the stunning Fulham Palace for tea and cakes before returning to Waterloo. \nChecks and Equipment  Riders are urged to pre-check general ABC bike serviceability before the event.
