It may be a wide and empty road but that doesn’t mean you can make up your own rules. The guy in charge is PCSO Kevin Phillips who does the organising and provides protective muscle if any if required. DESCRIPTION:TfL and the Met are studying the Speedwatch stats and trying to make patterns with them. So this Speedwatch will be in a location only previously done at the weekend. At the weekend it catches loads of drivers\, particularly cabbies. The aim is to see whether it is better or worse when the tradesmens’ vans are rushing about. Doing the work of holding the speedgun and writing down the numbers will be a Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer and PCSO Kevin Phillips. Specifically their enquiries into who’s driving too fast and not spotting the guys in yellow fluorescent holding a speed gun. Answer: a surprisingly large number. The volunteer holds the gun\, clocks the speeds and shouts them out. PCSO Kevin Phillips knows the car makes and takes their number plates. Success. It’s remarkable fun. DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be pointing a speed gun at hurriedly braking drivers on Salter Road. With her will be PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down number plates\, make and colour of those who didn’t stamp on the brakes hard enough. Getting noted down for the first time gets you a letter from TfL pointing out the error of your ways. Three strikes gets you onto the police national database of badly behaved drivers and extra attention on the road. This can be an enjoyable and even exciting way of passing time. At the moment he’s the CSW top scorer with five pages of wrong-doers car numbers and top speeds in the 40s. \nYou can join in. The response from pedestrians is very warm and enthusiastic — criticism is usually limited to “you ought to go down there\, the speeds are even worse”. Drivers are a bit more luke-warm but subdued. After all\, one of you is a policeman in full uniform.

Drivers with bad records come back to try and re-assure Kevin that they are good guys and offer him excuses like “I was going downhill” (on Dog Kennel Hill) and “the wind was pushing me along” (a scooter in Long Lane). DESCRIPTION:Speedwatch is a joint enterprise between the community and the police\, going equipped with a speedgun. The volunteer points the gun and calls out the mph and PCSO Kevin Phillips\, representing the long arm of the law\, writes down the car numbers. It can be a bit frustrating. Drivers stamp hard on the brakes when they spot the speedgun and the gun can’t give a reading until the speed stops dropping. Still\, every little helps. \nPedestrians and cyclists are generally very supportive. Drivers\, and particularly scaffolding lorry drivers\, less so. The volunteer is an essential part of the process so if you can join in\, please do so. He likes to have a long view of the road so that the motorist who is not paying attention (no\, no\, I can’t believe it) takes a few moments to see the speedgun pointing at them and jump on the brakes. Considering that Kevin in is full uniform and the volunteer has to wear hi-vis\, a fair number must be phoning their mothers and checking the satnav. DESCRIPTION:This a first-ever Community Speedwatch on the Heygate in Walworth. Speeds can get very high here\, with a nice\, straight road ahead. Speedwatch is a collaboration between concerned volunteers\, TfL and the Met. A Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer will be holding the speedgun and shouting out the speeds “45” “32” Beside her will be a PCSO noting down the car numbers\, makes and colours. Shortly after than deploring letters will be on their way to the drivers from TfL. It’s TfL who fund the PCSO. But it’s the Met who follow up the letters with action\, if required. \nThe PCSO is Kevin Phillips\, an affable guy who has been sorting out errant parkers and drivers for more than 20 years. He’s a dedicated speeder-catcher and currently tops the board for numbers of taxis caught in one session.
