SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist will be manning the speedgun on Christmas Eve. It’s a good time to catch the tired and emotional feeling cross that they to go to work. They will be supported by PCSO Kevin Phillips who soothes those who come back to complain and has an ear open for bonkers excuses. “The wind was behind me” and “I was going down hill” \nYou can join in. Contact Kevin on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He’s an affable guy\,  see his pic at the top. The Met take notice of his results which feed into road safety discussions with campaigners. Hint: we want more of it. Add your pressure.

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist volunteer\, Werner\, will be wielding the speed gun this evening on Southwark Bridge Road. He’s a dedicated speeder-catcher and currently tops the board for numbers of taxis caught in one session. Admittedly he hangs out in SE1 (principally) where the black cabs hang out too so he has an advantage on the rest of us. Top speed caught on speedgun so far (any vehicle- type eligible) is 66 mph. There aren’t any prizes and anyone can join in. Email PCSO Kevin Phillips (pictured) at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and tell him you want to volunteer. He’ll encourage you. More detail here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-in-a-20mph-zone/

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer will be holding the speedgun and PCSO Kevin Phillips (see pic) will be writing down the car numbers\, colours and makes. He sends the details\, by now including names and addresses\, to TfL. At this stage it’s TfL who send out deploring letters to the speeding drivers pointing out the error of the ways\, and that the next deploring post will come from the Met. Most pedestrians (and all cyclists) are supportive. Drivers not so much. \nThe idea is that the volunteer shows that the community cares about speed and the policeman protects the volunteer from abuse. To a surprising extent the abuse switches to the man in police uniform. Van drivers in particular seem convinced that the format is illegal and shout threats to complain. It isn’t and they don’t. \nAll in all\, it’s quite good fun and an interesting take on the war on the motorist. You can join in. Email kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be delighted to hear from you and will investigate locations you suggest. There are weekend and evening sessions to fit any schedule. Enjoy.

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:This a first-ever Community Speedwatch on the Heygate in Walworth. Speeds can get very high here\, with a nice\, straight road ahead. Speedwatch is a collaboration between concerned volunteers\, TfL and the Met. A Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer will be holding the speedgun and shouting out the speeds “45” “32” Beside her will be a PCSO noting down the car numbers\, makes and colours. Shortly after than deploring letters will be on their way to the drivers from TfL. It’s TfL who fund the PCSO. But it’s the Met who follow up the letters with action\, if required. \nThe PCSO is Kevin Phillips\, an affable guy who has been sorting out errant parkers and drivers for more than 20 years. See his pic up above. You can join in by texting him on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be pleased to hear from you and interested in suggestions for places where drivers speed (everywhere\, Kevin). Try him and see

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer Werner will be holding the speedgun with PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down the numbers of miscreants. TfL fund this bit of the war on the motorist and it’s remarkable fun. Kevin picks the locations. He likes to have a long view of the road so that the motorist who is not paying attention (no\, no\, I can’t believe it) takes a few moments to see the speedgun pointing at them and jump on the brakes. Considering that Kevin in is full uniform and the volunteer has to wear hi-vis\, a fair number must be phoning their mothers and checking the satnav. All this is fun and if you want to join in\, email Kevin on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be pleased to hear from you.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Speedwatch is a joint enterprise between the community and the police\, going equipped with a speedgun. The volunteer points the gun and calls out the mph and PCSO Kevin Phillips\, representing the long arm of the law\, writes down the car numbers. It can be a bit frustrating. Drivers stamp hard on the brakes when they spot the speedgun and the gun can’t give a reading until the speed stops dropping. Still\, every little helps. \nPedestrians and cyclists are generally very supportive. Drivers\, and particularly scaffolding lorry drivers\, less so. The volunteer is an essential part of the process so if you can join in\, please do so. You can email Kevin directly at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will try and arrange times\, dates and locations to suit you. Highly recommended. Surprisingly good fun.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer Werner will be holding the speedgun in Long Lane with PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down the numbers. Those doing more than 25mph get rude letters from TfL (who fund Kevin) and if they get caught again the Met start to pursue them. Drivers with bad records come back to try and re-assure Kevin that they are good guys and offer him excuses like “I was going downhill” (on Dog Kennel Hill) and “the wind was pushing me along” (a scooter in Long Lane). You can join in and hear these things for yourself. Email Kevin on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will find you a spot.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist Werner will be holding the speedgun on Salter Road. He likes to bag lots of speeders and usually does. At the moment he’s the CSW top scorer with five pages of wrong-doers car numbers and top speeds in the 40s. \nYou can join in. To book a session text PCSO Kevin Phillips on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will sort you out with a time and place. It’s fun. The response from pedestrians is very warm and enthusiastic — criticism is usually limited to “you ought to go down there\, the speeds are even worse”. Drivers are a bit more luke-warm but subdued. After all\, one of you is a policeman in full uniform.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be pointing a speed gun at hurriedly braking drivers on Salter Road. With her will be PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down number plates\, make and colour of those who didn’t stamp on the brakes hard enough. Getting noted down for the first time gets you a letter from TfL pointing out the error of your ways. Three strikes gets you onto the police national database of badly behaved drivers and extra attention on the road. This can be an enjoyable and even exciting way of passing time. To join in email Kevin on Kevin.j.Phillips@met.police.uk and he will be delighted to add you to his workforce.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be helping the police with their enquiries in Long Lane. Specifically their enquiries into who’s driving too fast and not spotting the guys in yellow fluorescent holding a speed gun. Answer: a surprisingly large number. The volunteer holds the gun\, clocks the speeds and shouts them out. PCSO Kevin Phillips knows the car makes and takes their number plates. Success. It’s remarkable fun. To join in\, email Kevin at Kevin.j.Phillips@met.police.uk and he will add you to his little list. You can suggest likely spots and Kevin will check them out. SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:TfL and the Met are studying the Speedwatch stats and trying to make patterns with them. So this Speedwatch will be in a location only previously done at the weekend. At the weekend it catches loads of drivers\, particularly cabbies. The aim is to see whether it is better or worse when the tradesmens’ vans are rushing about. Doing the work of holding the speedgun and writing down the numbers will be a Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer and PCSO Kevin Phillips. Kevin does all the organising and to join in email Kevin on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He’s very jovial (see pic) and will be glad to hear from you. SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer\, Werner will be pointing his speed gun at motorists in SE16. The speed limit is 20mph guys. It may be a wide and empty road but that doesn’t mean you can make up your own rules. The guy in charge is PCSO Kevin Phillips who does the organising and provides protective muscle if any if required. Mostly not though because these sessions are hugely popular with everyone other than motorists. To join in email Kevin at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be very pleased to hear from you.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer Sally Eva will be wielding the speedgun and PCSO Kevin Phillips will be taking the numbers of offending vehicles. These sessions are organised by the Met in collaboration with TfL. TfL do the funding and the volunteers and the Met do the doing. Some of the speeds they find are rather remarkable https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-in-a-20mph-zone/ \nThere are lots of fun aspects to this: watching drivers slam their brakes on when they spot you is sort of  bitter-sweet. They slowed down (good) but now you can’t catch them. You can join in. Email Kevin on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and state your preferences. He’s an affable guy with the correct views on speeders (he’s against them). He’s flexible about locations though he wants to check them out first.

DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer Werner will be wielding the speedgun on Salter Road in SE1. Numbers on the road have risen as people have been frightened off the buses and tubes and aggro has increased at the same time. SUMMARY:Community Speed Watch
DESCRIPTION:Organised by the Met\, this is a partnership between the police and the community. Representing the police we have PCSO Kevin Phillips\, new father and Welshman\, loves his volunteers and hates speeders. Representing the community\, a Southwark Cyclist volunteer holding the speed gun. Not just us I should explain: councillors\, concerned residents and a cross-section of the law-abiding take a turn. To join in email Kevin at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He’s very flexible on dates and times and interested to review new locations. People who do it once tend to do it again so it can’t be bad.

SUMMARY:community speedwatch (2)
DESCRIPTION:Don’t think we’re picking on Salter Road or anything. It’s just that our cycling volunteers specially object to speeding around here. The man with the gun for this second outing of the day on Salter Road will be Werner who runs some of our Saturday rides about Victorian engineers. \nThis is always a popular spot with the guys — lots of law-breaking\, as anyone who cycles through here can testify. It’s a mutual protection society. Kevin protects Werner from irate drivers and Werner protects Kevin from irate members of the public (who want him to do more). To join in\, mail Kevin at Kevin.j.Phillips@met.police.uk and/or read https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-in-a-20mph-zone/ for further useful information. \n

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be standing beside the road with a speed gun and a PCSO in full uniform beside him. Both of them have to wear hi-vis (because rules). Still drivers don’t spot them. Just bear that in mind when you are wondering if a driver has seen you or not. To join in mail PCSO Kevin Phillips on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will find lots of things for you to do.

DESCRIPTION:The team are concentrating on this bit of fast road which is used as a cut through by every van driver in south London. It’s also used by young people from Dulwich College and Kingswood School. And is made still more fun by a blind left turn. To show your support email PCSO Kevin Phillips on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk\, He will be very pleased to hear from you.

DESCRIPTION:New Year but the speed limit hasn’t changed. A lot of speeding goes on along this road. Our local volunteers are doing their bit to persuade drivers into more law-abiding ways. The general idea is here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-in-a-20mph-zone/ and the man to contact if you want to join in is PCSO Kevin Phillips on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk

SUMMARY:Dulwich Air Quality and School Streets meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dulwich Society meeting to discuss “Getting Around Dulwich: towards a healthier\, safer and more active future”. Air pollution and car ownership are high in Dulwich and many elderly people feel very dependent on their cars. \nA parent\, Dr Henrietta Collier\, from Bessemer Grange primary school will tell them about the success of their street closure in keeping the school run at bay and encouraging more active travel. A complete closure is already in place around Bellenden School and school-run barriers are planned at Robert Browning JMI off the Walworth Road. \nDr Helen Wood\, an academic at Queen Mary’s researching “The health effects of traffic-related air pollution”\, MP Helen Hayes and Southwark Cabinet member with responsibility for Air Pollution reduction\, councillor Richard Livingstone\, will also speak. \nMore controversially the meeting will discuss Controlled Parking Zones and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:This activity is called Community Speedwatch in the rest of the country but Boris Johnson felt Community Roadwatch was less offensive to the motoring lobby. However we will call it by its proper name which is a good description of what it does — point a speed camera at drivers going too fast and then tick them off. Car-crushing would be nice but even finger-wagging is a start. \nThe police need civilian protection so the drivers don’t get too offensive. Bob Eva will be representing Southwark Cyclists and holding the gun on Sydenham Hill at the junction with Crescent Wood Road. PCSO Kevin Phillips (see pic) will be writing the numbers down with added tellings-off for using a phone while driving\, going through no entry signs\, jumping red lights. I could go on.
