SUMMARY:Freecycle Ride to central London
DESCRIPTION:We are leading a ride to the London Freecycle which is a brilliant opportunity to get the whole family together to experience the fun and freedom of cycling on traffic-free roads in central London. It’s part of a festival of cycling led by the Mayor of London. Bits of it are remarkably silly. \n \nThe route takes in the Strand and Lincoln’s Inn Fields and returns to the Victoria Embankment\, taking in a section of the newly opened East-West Cycle Superhighway (CS3). This eight-mile circuit passes all the landmarks most people have heard of — Buckingham Palace\, Trafalgar Square\, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England. It even goes south of the river to places some people haven’t heard of like Waterloo. \nOur feeder ride starts at 10am outside the cafe in Peckham Rye Park. At this point I should warn you that the cafe may not look like a cafe because it is closed for renovations. Plus the path in front of the cafe which is called Strakers Road (because it used to be a road) is not named on Google maps. So we meet at a cafe that’s sadly closed\, on a path with a little known name. I hope that’s clear. The postcode is SE15 3UA. \nThe ride has set off surprisingly punctually in the past. It’s slow because I am glad to say that lots of kids come. Many of them are faster than me but not all. \nThere will be a pick up point under Peckham Arch near the Pulse and the Library and another at 10.30am by the Park Life Cafe in Burgess Park. The official address of the cafe is 3 Chumleigh St\, SE5 0RJ. Another way of thinking about it is that it is beside the big playground just off the Albany Road and has lots of toddler-sized fountains outside it. \nThis (by now very large) group will join the Freecycle route at Southwark Bridge and there will be a ride back to Peckham from there at 3pm. DESCRIPTION:Special Southwark Cyclists ride.  Bazalgette 2.  April 22\, 2019 \nBank Holiday ride of 4-5 hours celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Bazalgette\, the great Victorian civil engineer.  Organised by the same people as the regular Southwark Healthy Rides.  Easy paced all day ride with a lunch stop (Fulham Palace\, bring your own food or buy some there).  Will concentrate on the embankments and the upstream bridges (including Putney\, Battersea\, and Hammersmith\, latter now upgraded to car-free!). \nNote we are also having a shorter Bazalgette 1 ride on Easter Saturday (April 20th\, see listings)

SUMMARY:Northern Heights.  London Bridge to Alexandra Palace.
DESCRIPTION:Special 21 mile Bank Holiday ride to Alexandra Palace and back\, using a different route each way.  Begin northwards through the City and Islington. At Canonbury make the first of several contacts with the New River. Continue to Clissold Park (2nd New River sighting)\, then Woodberry Wetlands (New River 3) and Finsbury Park (New River 4).  Roughly following the New River has ensured a flat ride to this point.  But that changes as the route travels north.  From Finsbury Park pick up Quietway 10\, crossing the New River another 2 times. At Alexandra Palace Station\, leave Q10 and ascend to the Palace and collect the reward for climbing\, a view down upon London (and lunch at the Boating Lake Café). \nReturn route runs a bit to the west of the outward route.  Initially along a short part of the Parkland Walk to Muswell Hill then round to Archway Rd close to Highgate Station in order to join the longer section of Parkland Walk\, a green path along disused railway to Finsbury Park (info at https://underground-history.co.uk/northernh.php).  Delightful\, nearly 2 miles of off-road path.  Through the SW corner of Finsbury Park then join Q10 going south past the Emirates Stadium\, through Barnsbury and Legal London to join the East-West Superhighway (CS3) at Temple Avenue.  CS3 to Monument and across London Bridge to finish.  Hope to finish around 3pm as we will be going at our usual rather easy pace with plenty of stops at places of interest.  Everyone welcome on any type of bike. \nRoute worked out by Werner who will be leading.  Route track here http://taffimai.w2.org.uk/healthy-rides/NorthernHeights-20190505.html

SUMMARY:Exploring Engineering Ride - London Bridge to Abbey Mills
DESCRIPTION:As part of the ICE’s Explore Engineering Weekend\, we have partnered with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) to showcase the legacy of civil engineering greats such as Brunel\, Telford and Bazalgette.  The tour with will start and finish at the Southwark Gateway Needle on the south side of London Bridge and head up the Cycle Superhighway directly to Abbey Mills Pumping station (Bazalgette). The tour will then return via the Rivers Lea and Thames\, passing by:Bow Locks\, Limehouse Basin\, Wapping Hydraulic Power Station\, Wapping Overground station (Brunel’s Thames Tunnel) and St Katherines Dock (designed by Thomas Telford).  It’s free and everyone is welcome. The whole thing will probably take 2-3 hours\, so ending 12-1pm. The likely cycle route can be viewed here . DESCRIPTION:Still happening but certainly not on Easter Monday  any more \nWhen it happens this ride round London will visit every location on the Monopoly Board.  Werner leading.  Ride will start at a central location (probably Southwark Needle or South Bank\, check back for this and other details).  Route details nearer date.  Will be about 25 miles\, probably take 4-5 hours.  Although brought to you by the Healthy Ride team\, this is much longer than our usual rides\, but pace will be as easy as ever.  Likely to start early – provisionally 9am. SUMMARY:Climate Safe Streets Cycle Ride for the Election
DESCRIPTION:Local boroughs decide the layout of almost all roads in London. Councillors talk the talk about active transport\, but do they walk the walk (or cycle the cycle)? \nElections are a time to pressure our local politicians to TAKE ACTION. To improve cycling facilities MUCH MORE so that our roads are safer\, our planet less polluted – and we are all healthier. \nThe London Cycling Campaign are organising a programme of action for Climate Safe Streets (https://lcc.org.uk/campaigns/climate-safe-streets/). As part of this the local groups in Southwark\, Lewisham and Greenwich are having a joint ride on Saturday 23rd April. Will be an easy route and marshals will control the busy bits so families can join in. You do not have to be a member of LCC.
