SUMMARY:Climate Safe Streets Cycle Ride for the Election
DESCRIPTION:Local boroughs decide the layout of almost all roads in London. Councillors talk the talk about active transport\, but do they walk the walk (or cycle the cycle)? \nElections are a time to pressure our local politicians to TAKE ACTION. To improve cycling facilities MUCH MORE so that our roads are safer\, our planet less polluted – and we are all healthier. \nThe London Cycling Campaign are organising a programme of action for Climate Safe Streets (https://lcc.org.uk/campaigns/climate-safe-streets/). As part of this the local groups in Southwark\, Lewisham and Greenwich are having a joint ride on Saturday 23rd April. Will be an easy route and marshals will control the busy bits so families can join in. You do not have to be a member of LCC. SUMMARY:Exploring Engineering Ride - London Bridge to Abbey Mills
DESCRIPTION:As part of the ICE’s Explore Engineering Weekend\, we have partnered with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) to showcase the legacy of civil engineering greats such as Brunel\, Telford and Bazalgette.  The tour with will start and finish at the Southwark Gateway Needle on the south side of London Bridge and head up the Cycle Superhighway directly to Abbey Mills Pumping station (Bazalgette). The tour will then return via the Rivers Lea and Thames\, passing by:Bow Locks\, Limehouse Basin\, Wapping Hydraulic Power Station\, Wapping Overground station (Brunel’s Thames Tunnel) and St Katherines Dock (designed by Thomas Telford).  It’s free and everyone is welcome. The whole thing will probably take 2-3 hours\, so ending 12-1pm. The likely cycle route can be viewed here . SUMMARY:Northern Heights.  London Bridge to Alexandra Palace.
DESCRIPTION:Special 21 mile Bank Holiday ride to Alexandra Palace and back\, using a different route each way.  Begin northwards through the City and Islington. At Canonbury make the first of several contacts with the New River. Continue to Clissold Park (2nd New River sighting)\, then Woodberry Wetlands (New River 3) and Finsbury Park (New River 4).  Roughly following the New River has ensured a flat ride to this point.  But that changes as the route travels north.  From Finsbury Park pick up Quietway 10\, crossing the New River another 2 times. At Alexandra Palace Station\, leave Q10 and ascend to the Palace and collect the reward for climbing\, a view down upon London (and lunch at the Boating Lake Café). \nReturn route runs a bit to the west of the outward route.  Initially along a short part of the Parkland Walk to Muswell Hill then round to Archway Rd close to Highgate Station in order to join the longer section of Parkland Walk\, a green path along disused railway to Finsbury Park (info at https://underground-history.co.uk/northernh.php).  Delightful\, nearly 2 miles of off-road path.  Through the SW corner of Finsbury Park then join Q10 going south past the Emirates Stadium\, through Barnsbury and Legal London to join the East-West Superhighway (CS3) at Temple Avenue.  CS3 to Monument and across London Bridge to finish.  Hope to finish around 3pm as we will be going at our usual rather easy pace with plenty of stops at places of interest.  Everyone welcome on any type of bike. \nRoute worked out by Werner who will be leading.  Route track here http://taffimai.w2.org.uk/healthy-rides/NorthernHeights-20190505.html

SUMMARY:Freecycle Ride to central London
DESCRIPTION:We are leading a ride to the London Freecycle which is a brilliant opportunity to get the whole family together to experience the fun and freedom of cycling on traffic-free roads in central London. It’s part of a festival of cycling led by the Mayor of London. Bits of it are remarkably silly. \n \nThe route takes in the Strand and Lincoln’s Inn Fields and returns to the Victoria Embankment\, taking in a section of the newly opened East-West Cycle Superhighway (CS3). This eight-mile circuit passes all the landmarks most people have heard of — Buckingham Palace\, Trafalgar Square\, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England. It even goes south of the river to places some people haven’t heard of like Waterloo. \nOur feeder ride starts at 10am outside the cafe in Peckham Rye Park. At this point I should warn you that the cafe may not look like a cafe because it is closed for renovations. Plus the path in front of the cafe which is called Strakers Road (because it used to be a road) is not named on Google maps. So we meet at a cafe that’s sadly closed\, on a path with a little known name. I hope that’s clear. The postcode is SE15 3UA. \nThe ride has set off surprisingly punctually in the past. It’s slow because I am glad to say that lots of kids come. Many of them are faster than me but not all. \nThere will be a pick up point under Peckham Arch near the Pulse and the Library and another at 10.30am by the Park Life Cafe in Burgess Park. The official address of the cafe is 3 Chumleigh St\, SE5 0RJ. Another way of thinking about it is that it is beside the big playground just off the Albany Road and has lots of toddler-sized fountains outside it. \nThis (by now very large) group will join the Freecycle route at Southwark Bridge and there will be a ride back to Peckham from there at 3pm. DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists will be leading a feeder ride to the Prudential Ride London event.  There will also be a led return.  Ride will be fully marshalled and suitable for all cyclists of any age.  Meeting place is at the Cafe on Strakers Rd\, in the middle of Peckham Rye Park. \nThe cafe is marked in a slightly weird place on the map. it is right beside Strakers Road rather than as marked (as anyone who knows the park will know) over in the bushes. \nAfter 10 mind bending minutes of trying to draw a map I will just say that a lot of the route is down parks\, green spaces\, on-pavement cycle lanes and cycle superhighways. \nThere are two pick-up points on the way — the first at around 10.10am will be under Peckham Arch which is the access point into Peckham Square from Rye Lane. Eleanor will be meeting and greeting and the Arch looks like this: \n \nWe will meet a group from the north of the borough at Burgess Park Cafe (which is 200 Albany Road if you want to look at it on a google map) at 10.30am. A group from Crystal Palace are also expected to join us here and then we will all go on together to Southwark Bridge. \nAfter that it’s every man\, woman and child for themselves. From Tower Bridge to Buckingham Palace\, London’s greatest sights create an inspiring backdrop for a memorable day of cycling. \nSouthwark Cyclists will be leading an all-age ride up to join the London FreeCycle on July 30th. DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train ride with no work at the other end of it. What’s not to like? \nThe idea is to start from the place the Bike Train starts at Peckham Rye Station\, from the bike stands behind McDonalds. Then to follow the Bike Train route up to town\, do a loop to look at the sights and come home again. \nThe advantage of doing it on a non-working day would be less stress\, quieter roads\, and no feeling of having to get anywhere by a certain time. The pace would be slower\, we could take the kids\, anyone could stop\, drop out or turn round and go home at any point\, less commitment\, less stress. \nWe will do an interesting circle from Blackfriars along the Embankment to Westminster and back via the South Bank Centre so that it’s not just a route but has more context and shows ways to get to more interesting places than work.

Then via Victoria Park to Olympic Park.  Stop at Velodrome and look in\, maybe have coffee.  Explore Olympic Park then down River Lea towpath and Limehouse Cut to Wapping.  On to Tower Bridge and back along the river to Canada Water.
