SUMMARY:Peckham to Severndroog Castle - Healthy Ride +
DESCRIPTION:This ride starts at 9.30am from Peckham Square and turns at Severndroog Castle (see pic) on top of Shooters Hill. It ends back in Peckham at 1pm. That’s an earlier start and a later finish than usual and Severndroog Castle is 20m higher than the top of Sydenham Hill which was the previous summit. A new altitude record\, who could resist. \nPeckham Square is between Peckham Library\,and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre at the north end of Rye Lane (SE15 5JR). The outward route will use the bus lanes on busy A202 and A2 to Deptford Bridge and then come off road and use quiet roads to Eltham Well Hall via Lewisham and Kidbrooke Village. \nThere will be a coffee stop at Tudor Barn in Well Hall Pleasaunce [ www.tudorbarneltham.com ]. The website gives the impression it will be open but it looks a bit posh. \nNext comes a short ride to the southwest corner of Jack Wood and the steep (but short) path up to Severndroog Castle. There will be plenty of time to just walk up – the really steep section is only 300m long. \nAfter all that up there will be a fast return route all downhill\, initially using Shooters Hill Road\, then the underpass at the Sun in the Sands roundabout and quiet streets to Greenwich Park. More whizzing down the hill in the park and more quiet streets to Quietway 1 at the Halfpenny Bridge. Finally Quietway 1 to Surrey Canal Rd\, Bridgehouse Meadows and back streets to Peckham Square. \nThere will be several short stops at places of interest plus the one longer coffee stop. First-timers and old hands welcome! Be sure to wrap up warm\, the forecast for Saturday is a high of 5 degrees and a low of nought. The route is here [ www.google.com ]. It’s 16 miles at an easy pace. All welcome. Free and open to all. \n

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride via Hackney
DESCRIPTION:This +Plus ride will explore the City and Hackney en route to St Pancras and home again. Like all the +Plus rides it starts earlier at 9.30am and finishes at 1pm — offering the opportunity to explore new bits of London before lunch. \nThe ride starts outside Canada Water library where there are seats overlooking the water. Canada Water station has lifts which will take three full-size bikes but not all stations are so hospitable. East Dulwich Station has walk up access to trains and Queens Road has a lift (in theory\, check it’s working before basing your plans on it). Nunhead and Peckham Rye are inhospitable for bikes with lots of steps and no lifts. In fact\, check whether the Overground will be working at all because as of this moment it appears it may not. \nWerner will be leading the group north from Canada Water via Southwark Bridge and quietly through the City\, using CS1 to cross Great Eastern St and Old St safely. Once in Hackney they will pick up Quietway 2 and follow it to Cycle Superhighway 6 and St Pancras where there will be a coffee stop before turning for home. \nThe pace will be easy. The atmosphere cheerful. No need to book. The ride is free for all. These rides are organised by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. SC is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for safer cycling in London. Everything we do is free and open to all. No need to belong to LCC or live in Southwark.

SUMMARY:Boxing Day Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:I know we are all thinking so hard about Christmas Day that it’s difficult to think about the world afterwards. However for all those who think that it might be nice to get out of the living room and into the fresh air (and especially nice to take the kids away from their electronics) here is a Boxing Day ride. \nIt’s part of the series of Saturday rides though of course not on a Saturday. So it is two hours long\, easy paced\, open to all\, no need to book and free for everyone. It starts from Canada Water at 10am. East Dulwich station has easy access by bike and there are lifts at Canada Water which will take 3 full-size bikes at a time. \nIt will be led by Werner and head into town to look at Sculptures in the City and enjoy the empty City streets. Info on Sculpture in the City is here: [www.sculptureinthecity.org.uk]. Among the highlights is a Tracy Emin near the Gherkin and a picture is attached. \nNo need to book. Just turn up. These rides are organised by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for safer cycling in London. They are open to everyone. You don’t need to be a member of the group\, or the LCC or to live in Southwark.

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride +
DESCRIPTION:NOTE CHANGE OF START/FINISH LOCATION.  Meet 9.30 at Southwark Needle\, on south east corner of London Bridge\, top of Duke St Hill\, adjacent to London Bridge station.  Ride into Central London\, look at some of the Christmas lights. Plan is to get to extend the westward reach of rides to Notting Hill. Also will take a turn past Parliament to celebrate the first election with both sexes voting (anniversary Dec 14th). Wikipedia says “The British General Election on the 14 December 1918 was held just a month after the Armistice. Under the terms of the new Representation of the People Act\, the electorate now included most women aged over thirty and all men over twenty-one. A special provision also lowered the voting age to nineteen for those who had served in the war. The new electorate\, at 21\,392\,322\, was nearly triple what it had been in the previous election of December 1910 (7\,709\,981).” Often referred to as “The Khaki Election”.  Finish 1pm back at London Bridge.  There will be a coffee stop somewhere.  Should be quite a ride!  But all at our usual easy pace.  Everyone welcome.

SUMMARY:By Air and Under Sea - Healthy Ride from Greenwich to the Olympic Park
DESCRIPTION:Repeat of this popular\, easy-paced\, ride last ridden in July. Start/finish from Cutty Sark\, Greenwich\, beside the foot tunnel entrance.  It is surprisingly easy to take a bike on the Emirates Airline cable car at North Greenwich (although you do have to pay – £3.50 with Oyster Card etc). Route will go from the Airline to the Olympic Park via the Greenway (including the new access ramp near the southeast end). Coffee break somewhere in the Park\, then back via Isle of Dogs and the Greenwich Tunnel (so not strictly under sea\, but  the Thames here is tidal and salty). Route track below. Be assured the missing bit will be alright on the night! Philippa leading.  Part of our regular Healthy Rides series using as far as possible paths and quiet roads. SUMMARY:Dulwich to the Thames at Vauxhall - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:We did this route last year (see report) to demonstrate that you could do a non-hilly ride from Dulwich. Route follows the the “lost” river Effra to the Thames. Outward leg via Brockwell Park to Brixton town centre where traffic can be heavy. Down Brixton Road and round the Oval is gently downhill and mostly uses bus lanes. Will have a stop on Vauxhall Bridge to admire the Effra flowing into the Thames next to MI6. Return ride is via Kennington Park and Myatts Fields. There really are no significant hills on this Dulwich ride. Starting at 131ft and descending to 16 ft. With all the small bumps there is a total of 245ft of ascent\, all low slope stuff. SUMMARY:Healthy Rides Picnic Ride to Thames Barrier
DESCRIPTION:Joint ride for Southwark Cyclists and Bexley Cyclists. Note that you do not have to be a Southwark or Bexley rider to take part. Everyone is welcome.\nThis is a ride to celebrate the Saturday morning Healthy Rides and the opening of the new section of the Thames Path east of the Barrier (the “missing link”). Plus it provides a great opportunity to bring the 2 borough groups together.\nRides will set out as usual for a 3rd Saturday “+” ride at 9.30. Southwark riders from Peckham Square (with later pick ups at Canada Water\, 10.00\, and Cutty Sark\, 10.30). Route from Peckham will be Glengall Rd\, bit of Quietway 1 and Southwark Park to Canada Water. Bexley riders from Danson Park car park. Then Nat Route 4\, mostly Thames Path\, to Greenwich and continuing on Thames Path to the Barrier.\nPlan is to meet up at the Barrier at 11.30. Then the combined group will ride the missing link. If we get a decent turnout there could be 40+ cyclists\, so hopefully some great photos! Everyone then rides back along the link to the Barrier where we have a picnic. All riders need to bring their own food and drink\, or buy it from the Information Centre Café.\nWe would normally aim to get back from a “+” ride at 1pm. Clearly for this ride and picnic we will be much later. The plan is to depart around 1.30 and be back by 3.30. Anyone can\, of course\, leave earlier and get home closer to 1pm but they will have to do their own navigating.\nThis should be a fun day so please try to attend if you can. Also\, as with all Healthy Rides\, anyone who wants to join the rides can do so. New riders are\, as ever\, very welcome. \nRoute at https://goo.gl/kneMyH \n

SUMMARY:Rotherhithe to Peckham Routes- Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride starting and finishing in Deal Porter Square next to Canada Water Library.  9 miles along mostly quiet streets and paths\, so suitable for pretty well any cyclist.  Part of our regular Saturday morning Healthy Rides programme. \nThe Mayor has announced funding for a new cycle route from Rotherhithe to Peckham. This ride will look at existing routes and at places where new developments offer opportunities to improve routes or provide additional quality cycle path. Plan is to go from Canada Water to Peckham\, then back all the way to the Thames by a different route\, then return to Canada Water. \nWe will look at the site proposed in the Canada Water Masterplan (for the redevelopment of the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre and the Printworks) for a new pedestrian/cycle route from Canada Water to Lower Rd.  Then through Southwark Park to Drummond Rd. Will have a look at the old Peak Frean Biscuit Factory where a new ped/cycle route through railway arches to Blue Anchor Lane is planned.  Will finish the outward leg at Peckham Rye Station.  On the return plan to look at the route of the proposed Peckham Coal Line from Rye Lane to Queens Rd.  Then down Asylum Rd\, across to the paths through Bridgehouse Meadows and on to Surrey Quays. Next follow the NR425 route past Greenland Dock\, through Russia Woodland to the Thames at Durands Wharf.  This is the original location proposed for the Rotherhithe-Canary Wharf Bridge. Complete the ride by returning through Russia Woodland to Canada Water with a look at the proposed alignment of the “Greenway” through the old Printworks site. \nAny easy ride of 9 miles with plenty off-road.  Route with annotation at https://goo.gl/5yFntw

SUMMARY:Rotherhithe Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride using\, as far as possible\, quiet streets and paths. Suitable for all types of cyclist. \nThis ride will use 2 of the new Quietways. Starting at Canada Water a short ride past Greenland Dock and along Oldfield Grove will take us to Q1 at the start of the Millwall Path. Route then follows Q1 past the Den (Millwall Football Stadium)\, over the Connect 2 Bridge then on quiet streets to the South Bank (passing the Old Vic theatre on the way).  A short ride gets us to Superhighway 6 where we will reach the start of Q14 at Nicholson St.  Q14 is a work in progress\, but we can enjoy the 2 new modal filters at Gt Guildford St and Newcomen St and the new crossing of Tower Bridge Rd.  That is where Q14 ends at present. It is planned to continue mostly on the existing National Route 4 alignment and the ride will follow this to the Albion Channel\, turning off there to return to Deal Porter Square. \nQ1 and Q14 are useful routes that provide safe passage east-west across north Southwark.  Q1 is already heavily used and probably when complete Q14 will also prove popular.  Route is 9 miles and flat\, map at https://goo.gl/kV6jUB \nPart of our regular Saturday morning Healthy Rides. SUMMARY:Dulwich Park to Cator Park - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced route using mostly quiet streets and paths. There are some short stretches of busier road. Also some hills\, but short\, and we allow time to walk these. From Dulwich Park up to Horniman Museum\, then over the hill to Sydenham Station and on to Cator Park. Join National route 21\, the Waterlink Way\, at Cator Park and follow this nearly to Catford. So 2 miles that includes some of the nicest off-road path in south London. Back on quiet streets to Honor Oak then up and over the hill to return to Dulwich Park.  Previously ridden Sept 2nd 2017\, see report.  Route map at https://goo.gl/SdXbx8 \nPart of our regular Saturday morning Healthy Rides.
