SUMMARY:Peckham to Blackheath Loop - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:New version of a route we have cycled several times (see report 27 Oct 2017\, http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-oct-dec-2017.html).  This time will include Telegraph Hill.  We have not been up there to admire the view for a while.  Outward route up to Telegraph Hill then down to Brookmill Park and a not too steep route up to Blackheath and Greenwich Park.  At Lewisham will make a small diversion to see how the new landscaping at the Ravensbourne/Quaggy confluence is coming along. Short stop at the entrance to Greenwich Park where there are loos. Return down through the park and along Quietway 1\, as you know a favourite route and by far the best Quietway so far. \n10.5 miles\, all quiet streets or paths.  Plenty of time for walking the short steep bits.  Route at https://goo.gl/itW2R4.  GPX file at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/autumn-winter-2019-20.html \n

SUMMARY:Healthy Rides Picnic with Bexley Cyclists and others
DESCRIPTION:Meet in Greenwich Park at the bandstand\, up the hill\, bit to the east of observatory buildings\,  Lat\, Long 51.476547\, 0.002763.  From about 12 noon.  Most people will ride (see below) but non-riders are also welcome. \nThe ride to picnic with Bexley Cyclists starts at 10am in Dulwich Park (Dulwich Clock Cafe\, SE21 7BQ) and picks up riders in Peckham (10.30\, Peckham Square by Peckham Library\, SE15 5JR) and at Canada Water Library (11am\, Deal Porter Square\, opposite Canada Water Station). Meet-up in Greenwich Park is at the bandstand\, up the hill\, bit to the east of observatory buildings\,  Lat\, Long 51.476547\, 0.002763.  Route at http://tiny.cc/683raz   Aiming to reach there about 12 noon. \nWe all (or the more mature of us) sit down to eat (so remember to bring food and drink)\, but not before some games.  Maybe a slow cycling “race”\, longest track stand\, musical bikes\, who knows what else. \nWe are aiming to beat the turnout in 2018 when we held the picnic at the Thames Barrier and more than 60 people came (the photo shows some of them).  An amazing time was had by all. Last year’s report is here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-healthy-riders-on-picnic-ride/ — loads of photos and there’s a video too. Book the date – August 17th – and come along. \n

SUMMARY:Cutty Sark to Cody Dock - Healthy Ride +
DESCRIPTION:One of our faviourate places\, Cody Dock is tucked away off the River Lea not far from Canning Town. It is a community-led project to redevelop the old dock and open up parts of the Lower Lea.  Nice Cafe\, marvellous flowers\, a Damian Hurst and more.  We last visited in March when the weather was atrocious and we only did a ride through.  This time Amanda guarantees lovely weather so we can all fully enjoy this magical spot. Probable route will be east along the Thames Path past the O2 and the Flood Barrier\, then across the river on the Woolwich Ferry and round the Royal Docks dodging the planes taking off from City Airport. Up to the Greenway\, west to Stratford and on to the River Lea towpath. From Cody\, grotty bit past Canning Town\, then Canary Wharf\, the Isle of Dogs and the Greewich Foot tunnel.  Fabulous route.  Loads of it traffic free.  And pretty much flat. \nProbable route map: Cody_20jan18PART_1516380786867_IMG_9890

Very suitable ride for less experienced riders as it is all on quiet streets\, segregated tracks or off road paths. An easy\, flat\, 10mile ride. Everyone welcome on any type of bike. SUMMARY:Northern Heights. London Bridge to Alexandra Palace.
DESCRIPTION:Special 21 mile Bank Holiday ride to Alexandra Palace and back\, using a different route each way.  Begin northwards through the City and Islington. At Canonbury make the first of several contacts with the New River. Continue to Clissold Park (2nd New River sighting)\, then Woodberry Wetlands (New River 3) and Finsbury Park (New River 4).  Roughly following the New River has ensured a flat ride to this point.  But that changes as the route travels north.  From Finsbury Park pick up Quietway 10\, crossing the New River another 2 times. At Alexandra Palace Station\, leave Q10 and ascend to the Palace and collect the reward for climbing\, a view down upon London (and lunch at the Boating Lake Café). \nReturn route runs a bit to the west of the outward route.  Initially along a short part of the Parkland Walk to Muswell Hill then round to Archway Rd close to Highgate Station in order to join the longer section of Parkland Walk\, a green path along disused railway to Finsbury Park (info at https://underground-history.co.uk/northernh.php).  Delightful\, nearly 2 miles of off-road path.  Through the SW corner of Finsbury Park then join Q10 going south past the Emirates Stadium\, through Barnsbury and Legal London to join the East-West Superhighway (CS3) at Temple Avenue.  CS3 to Monument and across London Bridge to finish.  Hope to finish around 3pm as we will be going at our usual rather easy pace with plenty of stops at places of interest.  Everyone welcome on any type of bike. \nRoute worked out by Werner who will be leading.  Route track here http://taffimai.w2.org.uk/healthy-rides/NorthernHeights-20190505.html

SUMMARY:Peckham Healthy Ride - Quaggy River
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride\, this one mostly quiet roads with a few path sections through parks.  Some gentle hills\, nothing extreme. \nInspiration comes from the last Waterlink way ride that made me curious about another tributary of the Ravensbourne\, the one with the easy-to-remember-name\, the Quaggy River.  The Quaggy meets the Ravensbourne down by Lewisham station where all the new development is taking place.  Here we get a first view of Quaggy river where some quality landscaping (not yet finished) is going in at the confluence with the Ravensbourne. \nThe ride will follow the Quaggy\, mostly hidden behind buildings in a sad concrete culvert.  At Manor Park the river emerges\, but is still hidden away to start with\, although at the south end of the park you can get close on natural banks. Then on to Manor House Gardens where the Quaggy is kept in a channel\, behind railings.  What a contrast to the Ravensbourne in Brookmill Park which we will have seen earlier in the ride.  Lots of information about the Quaggy on the web site of QWAG (Quaggy Waterways Action Group\, https://qwag.org.uk/river-quaggy/) an active organization whose “goal is to demonstrate\, using the Quaggy\, that rivers can be major assets to an urban environment – bringing natural beauty\, educational facilities and wildlife value into urban landscapes and urban lives.” \nRoute is at https://goo.gl/svHy65 or download GPX file from Healthy Riders site.  Outward leg goes via Brookmill Park\, return leg goes past the Lewisham Leisure Centre\, Brockley Station and Nunhead.  16.5km\, just over 10 miles.

SUMMARY:Cutty Sark to Danson Park - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Easy-paced loop to Danson Park\, Bexley and back. Brief stops along the way at points of interest and a longer coffee stop at Danson Park.  Mike and Mary are leading.  Up through Greenwich Park (walking allowed)\, across Blackheath to Kidbrooke.  Pick up Quietway 1 and follow this past Well Hall Pleasaunce\, along Rochester Way to Falconwood.  Leave Q1 and continue parallel to Rochester Way pretty much to Danson Park.  Coffee stop at Old Stables. Back via Welling High St\, then turning south to Plumstead High St and down to last section of the Ridgeway. Negotiate the Plumstead mega-roundabout and on to Woolwich waterfront.  Finish along Thames path back to Cutty Sark.  19 miles. Lots of path and quiet street\, but some moderately busy roads as well.  Usual easy pace\, should be a doddle over 3.5 hours.

SUMMARY:Dulwich to Vauxhall Bridge - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride using a lot of quiet streets and paths as well as some busy roads on the outward leg. Ride created to demonstrate that it was possible to have a flat ride from Dulwich.  Trick is to follow the River Effra valley\, going via Brockwell Park and Brixton. Last did this ride Sept 1st 2018 (see report).  Will have a stop on Vauxhall Bridge to note where the  Effra was marked as flowing into the Thames next to MI6. Cannot do this any more as marked exit covered up due to Tideway Sewer works. Anyway\, this is not where the Effra mostly enters the Thames – find out more here (http://vauxhallhistory.org/river-effra-jon-newman/).  Note Effra was buried in a sewer by Bazalgette in the mid-1860s. SUMMARY:Bazalgette 1 - Easter Saturday Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Werner has planned a Bazalgette-themed ride. It was 200 years from Joseph Bazalgette’s birth on March 28th. A little late\, we plan to celebrate with a ride around sights associated with the great engineer.  Bound to include the memorial on Victoria Embankment and the blue plaque in St Johns Wood. Also a ride past the Institute of Civil Engineers\, whose president he was.   \nMore notes on route: out over Waterloo Bridge; CS3 on top of Victoria Embankment and Bazalgette Memorial\, St Margaret’s Westminster where he got married; Institute of Civil Engineers in Gt George St\, where he was president (report at time:  “appropriately his presidential address discussed ‘those engineering works which promote the health and comfort of the inhabitants of large cities\, and by which human life may be preserved and prolonged'” – sounds like he was a supporter of bike lanes; Hyde Park; A bit of Q12; Pushing the boundary into St John’s Wood and a look at his blue plaque; Stop in Regent’s Park; Dysfunctional pump in Broad(wick) St and Golden Square; Probably back over London Bridge. \nWill be the usual easy-paced ride.  Everyone welcome\, just turn up with your bike\, and note that all our rides are free. \nNB we are also doing a longer Bazalgette 2 ride on April 22nd\, Easter Monday.  Check the Events listing for details.

SUMMARY:Peckham to Clapham and Battersea Power Station - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Slight change to original plan. Will miss Clapham Common\, instead going through Clapham itself and on to the new Battersea Power Station developments before returning. Route at https://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_4850794.html. As far as possible on paths and quiet streets\, but likely to be some short busy stretches and a few busy junctions. Several short stops at interesting places. No long coffee stop as only a 2 hour ride. Jane leading this flat 11.6 mile ride. First-timers welcome!
