SUMMARY:Dulwich to Vauxhall Bridge - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride using a lot of quiet streets and paths as well as some busy roads on the outward leg. Ride created to demonstrate that it was possible to have a flat ride from Dulwich.  Trick is to follow the River Effra valley\, going via Brockwell Park and Brixton. Last did this ride Sept 1st 2018 (see report).  Will have a stop on Vauxhall Bridge to note where the  Effra was marked as flowing into the Thames next to MI6. Cannot do this any more as marked exit covered up due to Tideway Sewer works. Anyway\, this is not where the Effra mostly enters the Thames – find out more here (http://vauxhallhistory.org/river-effra-jon-newman/).  Note Effra was buried in a sewer by Bazalgette in the mid-1860s. SUMMARY:Peckham Healthy Ride - Quaggy River
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride\, this one mostly quiet roads with a few path sections through parks.  Some gentle hills\, nothing extreme. \nInspiration comes from the last Waterlink way ride that made me curious about another tributary of the Ravensbourne\, the one with the easy-to-remember-name\, the Quaggy River.  The Quaggy meets the Ravensbourne down by Lewisham station where all the new development is taking place.  Here we get a first view of Quaggy river where some quality landscaping (not yet finished) is going in at the confluence with the Ravensbourne. \nThe ride will follow the Quaggy\, mostly hidden behind buildings in a sad concrete culvert.  At Manor Park the river emerges\, but is still hidden away to start with\, although at the south end of the park you can get close on natural banks. Then on to Manor House Gardens where the Quaggy is kept in a channel\, behind railings.  What a contrast to the Ravensbourne in Brookmill Park which we will have seen earlier in the ride.  Lots of information about the Quaggy on the web site of QWAG (Quaggy Waterways Action Group\, https://qwag.org.uk/river-quaggy/) an active organization whose “goal is to demonstrate\, using the Quaggy\, that rivers can be major assets to an urban environment – bringing natural beauty\, educational facilities and wildlife value into urban landscapes and urban lives.” \nRoute is at https://goo.gl/svHy65 or download GPX file from Healthy Riders site.  Outward leg goes via Brookmill Park\, return leg goes past the Lewisham Leisure Centre\, Brockley Station and Nunhead.  16.5km\, just over 10 miles.

SUMMARY:Northern Heights. London Bridge to Alexandra Palace.
DESCRIPTION:Special 21 mile Bank Holiday ride to Alexandra Palace and back\, using a different route each way.  Begin northwards through the City and Islington. At Canonbury make the first of several contacts with the New River. Continue to Clissold Park (2nd New River sighting)\, then Woodberry Wetlands (New River 3) and Finsbury Park (New River 4).  Roughly following the New River has ensured a flat ride to this point.  But that changes as the route travels north.  From Finsbury Park pick up Quietway 10\, crossing the New River another 2 times. At Alexandra Palace Station\, leave Q10 and ascend to the Palace and collect the reward for climbing\, a view down upon London (and lunch at the Boating Lake Café). \nReturn route runs a bit to the west of the outward route.  Initially along a short part of the Parkland Walk to Muswell Hill then round to Archway Rd close to Highgate Station in order to join the longer section of Parkland Walk\, a green path along disused railway to Finsbury Park (info at https://underground-history.co.uk/northernh.php).  Delightful\, nearly 2 miles of off-road path.  Through the SW corner of Finsbury Park then join Q10 going south past the Emirates Stadium\, through Barnsbury and Legal London to join the East-West Superhighway (CS3) at Temple Avenue.  CS3 to Monument and across London Bridge to finish.  Hope to finish around 3pm as we will be going at our usual rather easy pace with plenty of stops at places of interest.  Everyone welcome on any type of bike. \nRoute worked out by Werner who will be leading.  Route track here http://taffimai.w2.org.uk/healthy-rides/NorthernHeights-20190505.html
