SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be holding the speedgun\, with police protection in the shape of PCSO Kevin Phillips (see pic). Passing pedestrians can be relied on to support speed control and often suggest other roads which double as race tracks. Passing drivers not so much. There’s me thinking that car drivers were peaceful\, law-abiding individuals\, deeply shocked by cyclists jumping red lights. I was totally unprepared for the shouting\, jeering and hooting aimed at the police. Lawless\, I say\, lawless. \nSo if you want to stand up for the Rule of Law\, volunteer for Speedwatch. Protect the police from ruffians. Email Kevin at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and tell him you want to join in. He will send you a schedule and cheerfully discuss dates\, times and locations with you. It’s good fun\, enjoy. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer Werner will be holding the speedgun in Long Lane with PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down the numbers. Those doing more than 25mph get rude letters from TfL (who fund Kevin) and if they get caught again the Met start to pursue them. Drivers with bad records come back to try and re-assure Kevin that they are good guys and offer him excuses like “I was going downhill” (on Dog Kennel Hill) and “the wind was pushing me along” (a scooter in Long Lane). You can join in and hear these things for yourself. Email Kevin on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will find you a spot.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Speedwatch is a joint enterprise between the community and the police\, going equipped with a speedgun. The volunteer points the gun and calls out the mph and PCSO Kevin Phillips\, representing the long arm of the law\, writes down the car numbers. It can be a bit frustrating. Drivers stamp hard on the brakes when they spot the speedgun and the gun can’t give a reading until the speed stops dropping. Still\, every little helps. \nPedestrians and cyclists are generally very supportive. Drivers\, and particularly scaffolding lorry drivers\, less so. The volunteer is an essential part of the process so if you can join in\, please do so. You can email Kevin directly at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will try and arrange times\, dates and locations to suit you. Highly recommended. Surprisingly good fun.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer Werner will be holding the speedgun with PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down the numbers of miscreants. TfL fund this bit of the war on the motorist and it’s remarkable fun. Kevin picks the locations. He likes to have a long view of the road so that the motorist who is not paying attention (no\, no\, I can’t believe it) takes a few moments to see the speedgun pointing at them and jump on the brakes. Considering that Kevin in is full uniform and the volunteer has to wear hi-vis\, a fair number must be phoning their mothers and checking the satnav. All this is fun and if you want to join in\, email Kevin on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be pleased to hear from you.

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:This a first-ever Community Speedwatch on the Heygate in Walworth. Speeds can get very high here\, with a nice\, straight road ahead. Speedwatch is a collaboration between concerned volunteers\, TfL and the Met. A Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer will be holding the speedgun and shouting out the speeds “45” “32” Beside her will be a PCSO noting down the car numbers\, makes and colours. Shortly after than deploring letters will be on their way to the drivers from TfL. It’s TfL who fund the PCSO. But it’s the Met who follow up the letters with action\, if required. \nThe PCSO is Kevin Phillips\, an affable guy who has been sorting out errant parkers and drivers for more than 20 years. See his pic up above. You can join in by texting him on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be pleased to hear from you and interested in suggestions for places where drivers speed (everywhere\, Kevin). Try him and see

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist Werner will be tracking the speeders on Long Lane in SE1. He holds the speedgun and PCSO Kevin Phillips (see pic) writes down the car numbers\, colours and makes. Kevin sends the details\, by now including names and addresses\, to TfL. At this stage it’s TfL who send out deploring letters to the speeding drivers pointing out the error of the ways\, and that the next deploring post will come from the Met. Most pedestrians (and all cyclists) are supportive. Drivers not so much. \nThe idea is that the volunteer shows that the community cares about speed and the policeman protects the volunteer from abuse. To a surprising extent the abuse switches to the man in police uniform. Van drivers in particular seem convinced that the format is illegal and shout threats to complain. It isn’t and they don’t. \nAll in all\, it’s quite good fun and an interesting take on the war on the motorist. You can join in. Email kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be delighted to hear from you and will investigate locations you suggest. There are weekend and evening sessions to fit any schedule. Enjoy.

DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer will be helping police with their enquiries this morning with a particular emphasis on speed and other anti-social behaviours relating to motor cars. As far as War on the Motorist goes this is low level stuff but it’s a pretty complete answer to the idea that if speeding mattered the police would police it..  They are trying and you can help them. SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist volunteer\, Werner\, will be wielding the speed gun this evening on Southwark Bridge Road. He’s a dedicated speeder-catcher and currently tops the board for numbers of taxis caught in one session. Admittedly he hangs out in SE1 (principally) where the black cabs hang out too so he has an advantage on the rest of us. Top speed caught on speedgun so far (any vehicle- type eligible) is 66 mph. There aren’t any prizes and anyone can join in. Email PCSO Kevin Phillips (pictured) at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and tell him you want to volunteer. He’ll encourage you. SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclists volunteer will be holding the speed gun in East Dulwich Grove — giving drivers a little surprise when they tear out of the traffic lights. \nFortunately the speedgun holders are protected by the long arm of the law in the form of PCSO Kevin Phillips and he in turn benefits from evidence that the community cares about speeding and wants to control it. SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist Sally will be taking the fight against speeding to the motorway between Peckham and New Cross. Trafffic explodes out of the High Street jams (five sets of traffic lights) and sets off at speed to make up the “lost” time. \nPCSO Kevin Phillips and our volunteer will be there with our speedgun. The speedwatch locations are suggested by the public and checked out by Kevin. \nThe top speed logged so far (in a 20mph zone) is 66. Full story and details of how Speedwatch works here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-in-a-20mph-zone/. Motor cyclists are worth extra points because a) they ae often going faster and b) they don’t have a front nunber plate. Team work required. \nYou can join in. Email Kevin at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk\, suggest a spot and let him know when you are available and you’re in. He’s nice. Affable. (see pic)

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:How we police our roads (or don’t) is a political big deal at the moment.  You can help it up the agenda. Speedwatch produces the data which show how much speeding goes on when the police aren’t looking. \nThis report https://www.police-foundation.org.uk/publication/the-future-of-roads-policing/ calls for more emphasis on keeping the roads safe\, It calls for the Home Office to adopt roads policing as a Strategic Policing Requirement\,  advocates adopting Vision Zero with police aiming for zero road deaths and recommends closer collaboration\, including with third sector aka you and me\, us \nTo join in contact PCSO Kevin Phillips@kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He’s an affable\, flexible\, agreeable sort of chap and will cheerfully adjust his ideas to yours. Operating the speedgun is easy\, passers-by overwhelmingly supportive and drivers
