SUMMARY:Climate Safe Streets Cycle Ride for the Election
DESCRIPTION:Local boroughs decide the layout of almost all roads in London. Councillors talk the talk about active transport\, but do they walk the walk (or cycle the cycle)? \nElections are a time to pressure our local politicians to TAKE ACTION. To improve cycling facilities MUCH MORE so that our roads are safer\, our planet less polluted – and we are all healthier. \nThe London Cycling Campaign are organising a programme of action for Climate Safe Streets (https://lcc.org.uk/campaigns/climate-safe-streets/). As part of this the local groups in Southwark\, Lewisham and Greenwich are having a joint ride on Saturday 23rd April. Will be an easy route and marshals will control the busy bits so families can join in. You do not have to be a member of LCC. We want everyone to come along and demonstrate to councillors and candidates that more needs to be done to encourage cycling – to improve road safety and reduce pollution. \nThere are start/finish points in each borough. \n\n\n\nBorough\nLocation of start point \nStart time \nEnd time \n\n\nGreenwich\nCutty Sark Gardens \n \n09:30am \n \n12:30pm\n\n\nLewisham\nFolkestone Gardens\, Trundleys Rd SE8 5JE \n \n10:00am \n \n1:00pm\n\n\nSouthwark\nSouthwark Park Pavilion Cafe \n \n10:30am \n \n1.30pm\n\n\n\n  \nYou do not have to do the whole route. Fine to join us for just a stretch. Or great if you can do the entire route back and forth through all 3 boroughs. Route map. \nDecorate your bike. Make a placard and work out how to carry it on your bike. We want to attract attention! \nPlease register on Eventbrite if you can\, it helps with the planning\, Climate Safe Streets Ride – Greenwich\, Lewisham & Southwark.  However\, not required – it is OK to just turn up. \nP.S Nice LCC video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gufyAgd4qQw

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Werner will be holding the speedgun and pointing it at errant drivers. The fall in cars on the road and the consequent fall in congestion have increased speeds. Whoever could have guessed that wide empty roads would increase dangerous driving!!! \nRoads policing is rising steadily up the political agenda and CSW has got a part to play. Our data makes it harder for the police to ignore the speeding that goes on when they aren’t around. Cameras on cycle helmets make dangerous tail-gating that little less likely to go unobserved and unreported. \nSpeedwatch in Southwark is run by PCSO Kevin Phillips who is affable and keen. To join in email him at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will listen to your views on good locations\, take a look for himself and arrange dates and times suitable for you. Enjoy. It’s good fun

SUMMARY:Community Speed Watch
DESCRIPTION:Organised by the Met\, this is a partnership between the police and the community. Representing the police we have PCSO Kevin Phillips\, new father and Welshman\, loves his volunteers and hates speeders. Representing the community\, a Southwark Cyclist volunteer holding the speed gun. Not just us I should explain: councillors\, concerned residents and a cross-section of the law-abiding take a turn. To join in email Kevin at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He’s very flexible on dates and times and interested to review new locations. People who do it once tend to do it again so it can’t be bad.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike at Walworth Living Room
DESCRIPTION:Reduce\, re-use\, re-cycle. How about Repair? This is a skill-sharing event and we will be sending our pro-mechanic to share his skills and teach other people to fettle their bikes. This is a community event to draw on skills in the community to mend stuff and get stuff mended. My grandad used to mend his family’s shoes and clocks. My aunt made clothes for four children. Fixing broken things is very satisfying. The idea is to value some of those skills again. \nIt’s being held at the Walworth Living Room (see pic above) but probably indoors rather than out. This is a new community space in Walworth\, for eating\, learning\, playing\, working\, sharing a cup of tea and getting to know your neighbours. The heart of the building is the community kitchen\, with shared activity\, meeting and office spaces. \nWe are just working on the bike-fixing bits but anyone with a broken thing or skills in mending other (not too enormous) things should phone 020 7703 3803 to contact the organisers or just come along.

It’s also used by young people from Dulwich College and Kingswood School. And is made still more fun by a blind left turn. To show your support email PCSO Kevin Phillips on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk\, He will be very pleased to hear from you.

SUMMARY:Car-free day 2019
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists Car Free Day \nSouthwark Cyclists are planning to run rides and events as part of London Car Free Day\, starting at 11am.  The programme will include group rides around the car free area (including Tooley St\, Tower Bridge\, Fenchurch St\, Bank\, Bishopsgate\, London Bridge).  We will be organising some small competitions on Tooley St to test your cycling skills\, e.g. slow races\, track standing\, limbo.  Bring any equipment for street games\, e.g. tennis or badmnton rackets and shuttles/balls\, in case we get bored with cycling (unlikely\, but we might just fancy a quick game of something else). \nWe are asking you to sign up so we have an idea of numbers and can do some planning. If a lot of people are coming we will maintain a constant presence at the Needle.  If we are not there\, come and search for us. Look for a bike with an orange flag on a tall pole.  See you there! \nIt would be helpful to know rough numbers\, so if you are planning to come along there’s an (optional) Evenbrite form at:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/southwark-cyclists-car-free-day-tickets-72845110687   Do not worry if you have not done this – just turn up. We will be there. \nSeptember 22nd is London’s biggest car-free day so far\, closing 12.3 miles (20km) of roads in the centre of the city. Roads will be closed around London Bridge\, Tower Bridge and much of the City of London.  Boroughs across the city will also hold events promoting walking\, cycling and public transport\, as well as creating scores of “play streets”.

SUMMARY:Healthy Rides Picnic with Bexley Cyclists and others
DESCRIPTION:Meet in Greenwich Park at the bandstand\, up the hill\, bit to the east of observatory buildings\,  Lat\, Long 51.476547\, 0.002763.  From about 12 noon.  Most people will ride (see below) but non-riders are also welcome. \nThe ride to picnic with Bexley Cyclists starts at 10am in Dulwich Park (Dulwich Clock Cafe\, SE21 7BQ) and picks up riders in Peckham (10.30\, Peckham Square by Peckham Library\, SE15 5JR) and at Canada Water Library (11am\, Deal Porter Square\, opposite Canada Water Station). Meet-up in Greenwich Park is at the bandstand\, up the hill\, bit to the east of observatory buildings\,  Lat\, Long 51.476547\, 0.002763.  Route at http://tiny.cc/683raz   Aiming to reach there about 12 noon. \nWe all (or the more mature of us) sit down to eat (so remember to bring food and drink)\, but not before some games.  Maybe a slow cycling “race”\, longest track stand\, musical bikes\, who knows what else. \nWe are aiming to beat the turnout in 2018 when we held the picnic at the Thames Barrier and more than 60 people came (the photo shows some of them).  An amazing time was had by all. Last year’s report is here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-healthy-riders-on-picnic-ride/ — loads of photos and there’s a video too. Book the date – August 17th – and come along. \n

SUMMARY:Freecycle ride to central London
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists will be leading a feeder ride to the Prudential Ride London event.  There will also be a led return.  Ride will be fully marshalled and suitable for all cyclists of any age. If you want to help you can volunteer here:  https://lcc.org.uk/articles/volunteer-as-a-lcc-ride-marshal-at-freecycle-2019 and there will be free training on July 20th. \nThe starting place is at the Cafe on the Rye in the middle of Peckham Rye Park for a 10am start. The cafe looks like this: \n \nThe cafe is actually on Strakers Road which used to be a road through the park. The map is distinctly unhelpful. I think the picture shows bits of the car park which used to be beside the cafe. where there is now a rather splendid playground. \nWe will meet a group from the north of the borough at Burgess Park Cafe (which is 200 Albany Road if you want to look at it on a google map) at 10.30am. A group from Crystal Palace are also expected to join us here and then we will all go on together to Southwark Bridge. \nAfter that it’s every man\, woman and child for themselves. The return ride from Southwark Bridge at 3pm is not at all compulsory but if you want to ride back with us as well then details will be finalised on arrival. \nRoute: https://cycle.travel/map/journey/110158\nStart point: Strakers Road\, Peckham Rye Park\, Peckham SE15 3UA\nEnd point: Southwark Bridge\nStart time: 10:00\nDistance: Five miles\nReturn ride start point: Southwark Bridge\nReturn ride start time: 15:00 \nMore info about the Freecycle is here: https://www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/events/freecycle/ including a map of exactly which bits of central London are covered. We are part of the London cycling campaign but you don’t have to be to join. SUMMARY:Dulwich Air Quality and School Streets meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dulwich Society meeting to discuss “Getting Around Dulwich: towards a healthier\, safer and more active future”. Air pollution and car ownership are high in Dulwich and many elderly people feel very dependent on their cars. \nA parent\, Dr Henrietta Collier\, from Bessemer Grange primary school will tell them about the success of their street closure in keeping the school run at bay and encouraging more active travel. A complete closure is already in place around Bellenden School and school-run barriers are planned at Robert Browning JMI off the Walworth Road. \nDr Helen Wood\, an academic at Queen Mary’s researching “The health effects of traffic-related air pollution”\, MP Helen Hayes and Southwark Cabinet member with responsibility for Air Pollution reduction\, councillor Richard Livingstone\, will also speak. \nMore controversially the meeting will discuss Controlled Parking Zones and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mardi Gras Bike Parade
DESCRIPTION:Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday or\, lapsing into English\, Shrove Tuesday. Your last chance to eat sugar\, butter\, eggs and flour for a month. For the first time it will be celebrated in Borough and Bankside with a Bike Parade. \nStarting at 1pm\, decorated bikes\, included disabled-accessible bikes from Wheels for Wellbeing\, will travel a short route through Bankside and Borough\, taking some Mardi Gras colour to the Tate. The exact route is still under discussion but experienced cyclists\, abled and dis-abled are needed to marshal the ride plus some arty/crafty types to decorate the bikes. \nThe day will round off with a free Mardi Gras Pancake Party. Children are invited to come after school from 3:30 to 5pm for pancake flipping contests\, fresh pancakes\, live music and a chance to ride the decorated Mardi Gras bikes. The party will take place next to The Fruit Tree on Great Suffolk Street\, SE1 1PE. \nExperienced cyclists are needed both to ride the accessible bikes and to join in on their own bikes. The Parade will be marshalled and riders with experience of guided group cycling are particularly needed. Children\, sadly\, are not allowed on the Parade but can try the accessible bikes at the Pancake Party. All riders must register in advance. \nTo take part\, apply via the website https://se1mardigras.wordpress.com or email hmdigitalprojects@gmail.com.

Or that a community of French Huguenot refugees settled here? Have you spotted the Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Camberwell New Road? Ever bought Cypriot pastries in SE5 or French chocolate in SE15? \n\n\nThis free guided cycle ride will uncover the European history of Camberwell and Peckham. It’s led by Eleanor Margolies\, author of ‘Green Camberwell’. All welcome\, including accompanied children. We will mainly be on quiet roads and will travel at a gentle pace\, with stops for sightseeing and appropriate refreshments. \nBooking: The ride is completely free but it would help us to plan if you book. They will fit parts if you bring them (or rush off and buy them from the good local bike shops). \nSadly\, no coffee. The workforce never gets time to drink it anyway.
