SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer Werner will be holding the speedgun with PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down the numbers of miscreants. TfL fund this bit of the war on the motorist and it’s remarkable fun. Kevin picks the locations. He likes to have a long view of the road so that the motorist who is not paying attention (no\, no\, I can’t believe it) takes a few moments to see the speedgun pointing at them and jump on the brakes. Considering that Kevin in is full uniform and the volunteer has to wear hi-vis\, a fair number must be phoning their mothers and checking the satnav. All this is fun and if you want to join in\, email Kevin on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. He will be pleased to hear from you.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer Werner will be holding the speedgun in Long Lane with PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down the numbers. Those doing more than 25mph get rude letters from TfL (who fund Kevin) and if they get caught again the Met start to pursue them. Drivers with bad records come back to try and re-assure Kevin that they are good guys and offer him excuses like “I was going downhill” (on Dog Kennel Hill) and “the wind was pushing me along” (a scooter in Long Lane). You can join in and hear these things for yourself. Email Kevin on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will find you a spot.

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be holding the speedgun\, with police protection in the shape of PCSO Kevin Phillips (see pic). Passing pedestrians can be relied on to support speed control and often suggest other roads which double as race tracks. Passing drivers not so much. There’s me thinking that car drivers were peaceful\, law-abiding individuals\, deeply shocked by cyclists jumping red lights. I was totally unprepared for the shouting\, jeering and hooting aimed at the police. Lawless\, I say\, lawless. \nSo if you want to stand up for the Rule of Law\, volunteer for Speedwatch. Protect the police from ruffians. Email Kevin at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and tell him you want to join in. He will send you a schedule and cheerfully discuss dates\, times and locations with you. It’s good fun\, enjoy. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be pointing a speed gun at hurriedly braking drivers on Salter Road. With her will be PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down number plates\, make and colour of those who didn’t stamp on the brakes hard enough. Getting noted down for the first time gets you a letter from TfL pointing out the error of your ways. Three strikes gets you onto the police national database of badly behaved drivers and extra attention on the road. This can be an enjoyable and even exciting way of passing time. To join in email Kevin on Kevin.j.Phillips@met.police.uk and he will be delighted to add you to his workforce.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be helping the police with their enquiries in Long Lane. Specifically their enquiries into who’s driving too fast and not spotting the guys in yellow fluorescent holding a speed gun. Answer: a surprisingly large number. The volunteer holds the gun\, clocks the speeds and shouts them out. PCSO Kevin Phillips knows the car makes and takes their number plates. Success. It’s remarkable fun. To join in\, email Kevin at Kevin.j.Phillips@met.police.uk and he will add you to his little list. You can suggest likely spots and Kevin will check them out. The suggested schedule includes weekends. It’s fun.

DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclist volunteer will be holding the speed gun and shouting out car speeds on Lordship Lane. With him will be PCSO Kevin Phillips writing down car numbers\, makes and colours.  A succession of drivers\, spotting them\, will be standing on their brakes. It’s a good way to help them remember what the speed limit is (20mph for those interested).  One small step towards putting the motor car in its place. SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer Bob Eva\, the speedgun and his personal protection\, PCSO Kevin Phillips will be at the junction of Lordship Lane and Court Lane. This is always a popular spot with the guys — lots of law-breaking\, as anyone who cycles through here can testify. It’s a mutual protection society. Kevin protects Bob from irate drivers and Bob protects Kevin from irate members of the public (who want him to do more). SUMMARY:Funeral for the Unknown Cyclist - Pedal on Parliament
DESCRIPTION:This is a  national cycling and walking protest & die-in against the government & Parliament before the autumn budget. It’s organised by Stop Killing Cyclists\, who base their approach on the very successful Stop the Child Murders die-ins in Holland\, during the early 70s\, which were the catalyst for the transformation of Holland into  the most bike-friendly country in the world. If you’ve ever ridden a bike in The Netherlands\, you’ll know how far we have to go..\n\n\n\n\nThe protest is to condemn all existing and previous governments from all the major parties for their failure to take comprehensive action on safer cycling. It calls for £3 billion a year to be invested in a national protected cycling network and no more tax cuts for fuel. These cuts are damaging our children’s lungs for life and shortening lives.\n\n\n\nWe have some of the lowest levels of cycling investment in Europe and the highest levels of childhood obesity We need urgent action to tackle these problems and investment in cycling is one of the best.\n\nThere’s a feeder ride to the protest which will pass by Crol coffee shop at the Dunton Road/Lynton Road lights on QW1. Join Jane Dent for a coffee and then join the ride at 11.25am to Webber St and pick up more people at the corner of CS6 Blackfriars Rd at 11.40am. Or join the protest at midday in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. At 1pm the procession starts and from 2-3pm there’s a rally and die-in at the Treasury\, Parliament Square.\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on QW1
DESCRIPTION:Let the Doctor check your bike. The Doctor and his bike health workers will tighten your brakes\, pump up your tyres and index your gears. Never make those strange noises again when you brake or change gear. The doctor likes to be challenged so bring your problems along. \nHis aides and attendants will be handing out literature\, discussing the latest news on bringing safe cycling to the Old Kent Road and gossiping. Everything is free. Everyone is welcome. A good time will be had by all unless it rains in which case I don’t know what we will do. No Bike Marking. Sorry. \n\nThe google map below is more or less right. In practice we will be a little closer to the traffic lights on the opposite corner of Lynton Road to Crol and Co (77 Dunton Road) (excellent cafe). \n\n

DESCRIPTION:This delightful spot is our pick-up point by Denmark Hill Station. It’s a good cafe too and I must confess to enjoying the car-free peacefulness of the seats\, flowers and planters. The route goes down here round the corner and then straight until it joins Camberwell Grove. Down the hill\, through the backstreets and into Burgess Park. \nThere it meets the rest of the ride and continues up Portland Street\, along the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the E&C bypass and onto the lovely segregation. We buddy you all the way to your destination and buddy you back. Come with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars.  \nThe Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. We get to Blackfriars at 8.30am. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up \n\n\n\nThe map is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12 \nNota Bene that the bit from Dulwich Village to Denmark Hill only runs for special occasions and subject to bribery (surprisingly small amounts accepted). So if that’s the bit for you let us know asap so that we run it. \n\n\n\nAnd the cycle.travel map is here: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/41005. The info with the map says we do 500m on major roads so it may not know about the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road — and 130m pushing. No pushing. I’m fine to push when required but it’s not required. \n\n\n\n\n\nSouthwark Cyclists is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for more\, better cycling in London. Most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Most of us live in Southwark but some of us don’t and you don’t have to. And everything we do is free

SUMMARY:Freecycle: Ride London
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists will be leading a feeder ride to the Prudential Ride London event.  There will also be a led return.  Ride will be fully marshalled and suitable for all cyclists of any age.  Meeting place is at the Cafe on Strakers Rd\, in the middle of Peckham Rye Park. \nThe cafe is marked in a slightly weird place on the map. it is right beside Strakers Road rather than as marked (as anyone who knows the park will know) over in the bushes. \nAfter 10 mind bending minutes of trying to draw a map I will just say that a lot of the route is down parks\, green spaces\, on-pavement cycle lanes and cycle superhighways. \nThere are two pick-up points on the way — the first at around 10.10am will be under Peckham Arch which is the access point into Peckham Square from Rye Lane. Eleanor will be meeting and greeting and the Arch looks like this: \n \nWe will meet a group from the north of the borough at Burgess Park Cafe (which is 200 Albany Road if you want to look at it on a google map) at 10.30am. A group from Crystal Palace are also expected to join us here and then we will all go on together to Southwark Bridge. \nAfter that it’s every man\, woman and child for themselves. The return ride is not at all compulsory but if you want to come back as well then details will be finalised on arrival. \nDetails: \nRoute: Southwark to Southwark Bridge\nStart point: Strakers Road\, Peckham Rye Park\, Peckham SE15 3UA\nEnd point: Southwark Bridge\nStart time: 10:00\nDistance: Five miles\nReturn ride start point: Southwark Bridge\nReturn ride start time: 15:00 \nMore info at https://www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/events/freecycle/rider-info/led-rides/   (Includes info on other borough led rides.) \nWe are part of the London cycling campaign but you don’t have to be to join. Everything we do is free and everyone is welcome. \n\n

SUMMARY:Talk by Hackney Family Cycling
DESCRIPTION:As part of Southwark Cyclists bid for world domination we have been thinking of copying Hackney. They have a Family Cycling Library of bikes useful for families\, carrying children\, babies\, toddlers\, and lots and lots of shopping — bike seats\, trailers\, cargobikes\, tagalongs and other bits of family cycling equipment – all free to borrow. \nThe picture gives you the idea and shows founder Ruth-Anna Macqueen of Hackney Family Cycling who is coming to our monthly meeting to tell us how she set it up and how it operates. https://hackney.cc/events/hackney-family-cycling-library-launch-and-family-ride/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis meeting is at our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \n \nVery respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, left into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nLast time I said that\, sadly\, there was no pub in the area. There is some dispute about this but I have to say I didn’t notice one. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

SUMMARY:Exchanging Places and free Bike Marking
DESCRIPTION:Take a look at life from the cab of a lorry and see how much (or how horrifyingly little) the driver sees. ‘Exchanging Places’ cycle safety events are run by the Metropolitan Police and allow cyclists to get a better understanding of what drivers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and buses see around them by sitting in the cab. \nThe Met’s finest will also security mark your bike — which is a good idea as it means that there is a full record of your bike on file somewhere and if it gets nicked and the police by chance find it\, you might get it back. \nGetting your bicycle visibly security marked and registered acts as a deterrent to potential cycle thieves as they know your bike is traceable\, and reduces your chances of being a victim of cycle theft. And\, if it should be stolen\, registered bicycles and far more likely to be reunited with their rightful owners. \nTeam London Bridge are hosting this event at the junction of Weston Street and St Thomas Street (just outside London Bridge Station)\, 5pm-7pm on Tuesday 4th April. No need to register\, feel free to drop by.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London EARLIER START
DESCRIPTION:The award-winning Southwark Cyclists Bike Train runs again today. This (free!) service will run once a month till Spring. The arrival of Spring will be determined empirically. We will conduct a careful and thorough examination of the weather. Some arrangements have changed as a result of the Bike Train Survey which showed demand for an earlier start.. \n\n\nAn earlier start there therefore is. Fifteen minutes earlier. We start at 7.45 am from Nunhead Station and pick up riders from Peckham Rye station (from the bike stands behind McDonalds) at 7.55am. We are joined by riders from Denmark Hill who leave that station at 7.55am (from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk) and join the train in Burgess Park. \nWe cycle through two parks\, north along a traffic-calmed backstreet\, onto the pavement-cycling lanes along the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle bypass and then onto the lovely new TfL segregation all the way to Blackfriars. Arrival time approx 8.30am. On time every time. Fun and free. \nTo book your seat at Denmark Hill text Liz Eden on 07814 515 715. Don’t turn up without warning at Denmark Hill because this branch line will be demand-led (management speak for “may not run if there are no passengers”). For Peckham or Nunhead contact me on 07842 640 207 — or don’t book anything at all and just turn up. All welcome. Free. \nThe route is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49922566210585%2C-0.0963249999999789&z=13 \nUpdate: Practice the route on a day out – with our guide to the history of the area! SUMMARY:AGM & Monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our AGM and monthly meeting are at the new Nunhead Green Community Centre at the usual time — upstairs in Holly. There’s a lift for those who can’t manage stairs. \nThere’s parking for 6 bikes outside the centre and more parking around the Green. The approach from Nunhead Lane involves a not very nice\, not very wide blind bend which the traffic takes too fast\, so the advised approach is via Scylla Road. \nFormal business should not take long. There will be an opportunity to discuss progress during 2015-16 and plans for 2016-2017. Come along and find out what we are doing and how you might be able to help. There will be free wine and pizza after and this is when the best discussions take place!

SUMMARY:Cycle to Work Special from Crystal Palace
DESCRIPTION:Starts from the Cafe St Germain\, here shown looking very summery and complete with bike. Leader will be Angus Hewlett. He sets off before the central Southwark Bike Train to get though Dulwich before the school run. \nUp Greendale (a hill but green) and down through Camberwell\, Burgess Park\, up Portland Street and around the Elephant and Castle on the bypass. Then he’s offering a choice between CSH7 over Southwark Bridge or CSH6 (aka the North/South Cycle Superhighway) up Blackfriars Road and over that Bridge. There’s only one Angus so how he’s going to manage the split is not clear. \nTo let him know you are coming you can text me on 07842 640 207 or you can just turn up. Angus is cool with either. It’s normal to be late but don’t be. Just in time is OK.

SUMMARY:Cycle to Work Day -- on the Southwark Bike Train
DESCRIPTION:Cycle to Work Day is a national event to be held on September 14th\, 2016. It aims to encourage everyone to take to two wheels and cycle to work for at least one day. \nJoin all those who have started cycling to work with the Southwark Bike Train — and know that all over the country\, thousands of others are taking the same step towards fun and fitness at the same time. \nWe are free\, cheerful and reliable as always and we will be running our normal timetable. \nWe leave Nunhead Station at 8am\, Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye stations at 8.10am. At Denmark Hill we leave from the cafe in Windsor Walk led by Liz Eden (07814 515 715) and arrive at Blackfriars at 8.45am. The meeting point at Peckham Rye is the bike stands behind McDonalds. From there riders are taken on individually (if they want) and destinations so far include Faringdon\, Kings Cross\, Westminster\, Mayfair and Tower Hill. \nOur route takes in two parks\, a traffic-calmed backstreet\, the cycling-on-the-pavement lanes on the New Kent Road\, the Elephant and Castle by-pass and then the new TfL segregation. Fanastisch (Dutch) \nTo celebrate Cycle to Work Day we will be running Bike Train specials to St Thomas’s Hospital (along Upper Ground)\, to Guys Hospital along Union Street and Newcomen Street and to the Southwark Council HQ in Tooley Street. \nEntirely free and all welcome.
