SUMMARY:Bike Train runs again
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train runs again — the weather gods are smiling on us. We skip (can trains skip?) between the rain-drops\, lightening bolts and thunder. \nOur route is the usual one; two parks\, one traffic-calmed backstreet\, the pavement-cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the lovely new segregated cycle lanes. Everyone who tries it is converted. \nWe start from Nunhead Station at 8am; pick up at Peckham Rye station at 8.10am and meet a branch line coming in from Denmark Hill Station at 8.20am in Burgess Park. The departure point from Peckham Rye station is the bike stands behind McDonalds (west end of Holly Grove). We arrive at the north end of Blackfriars Bridge at 8.45am. \nFrom there we take riders on individually. So far we have taken people to Kings Cross\, Faringdon\, Mayfair\, Hyde Park and the Tower (not for incarceration). All this is free. Everyone is cheerful and no one fears for their life at any point. \nReturn rides are also arranged individually. Like real trains these are heart-stoppingly expensive. No that’s a joke. These are also cheerfully arranged and free. To join in mail southwark@lcc.org.uk or text me on 07842 640 207 or just turn up.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London and beyond
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train led by experienced cyclists takes riders to Blackfriars on a route through two parks\, up a traffic-calmed backstreet\, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the wonderful new segregated cycle lanes. We set off from Nunhead station at 8am\, joining cyclists at Peckham Rye Station at 8.10am (from the bike stands behind McDonalds) and meeting a branch line from Denmark Hill at 8.20am in Burgess Park. That branch line leaves Denmark Hill at 8.10am. \nWe arrive at the north end of Blackfriars Bridge at 8.45am where riders go their separate ways accompanied (if they wish) by Bike Buddies who have so far taken cyclists on to Hyde Park\, Mayfair\, Kings Cross and Tower Hill. The majority of the route is off-route through parks or segregated — with three feet of raised pavement between riders and the traffic. \nRides back are arranged individually. Everyone is welcome. Unlike the trains\, everyone gets a seat\, no one gets a backpack in their face and there are no cancellations or delays. Arrive on time with a feeling of achievement before 9am. \nTo take part just turn up or text me on 07842 640 207 or mail southwark@lcc.org.uk \n

This is a canal bridge over the former canal about half way through. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, north along a traffic-calmed backstreet\, onto the pavement-cycling lanes along the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle bypass and then onto the lovely new TfL segregation all the way to Blackfriars. SUMMARY:Cycle to Work Special from Crystal Palace
DESCRIPTION:Starts from the Cafe St Germain\, here shown looking very summery and complete with bike. Leader will be Angus Hewlett. He sets off before the central Southwark Bike Train to get though Dulwich before the school run. \nUp Greendale (a hill but green) and down through Camberwell\, Burgess Park\, up Portland Street and around the Elephant and Castle on the bypass. Then he’s offering a choice between CSH7 over Southwark Bridge or CSH6 (aka the North/South Cycle Superhighway) up Blackfriars Road and over that Bridge. There’s only one Angus so how he’s going to manage the split is not clear. \nTo let him know you are coming you can text me on 07842 640 207 or you can just turn up. Angus is cool with either. It’s normal to be late but don’t be. Just in time is OK.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to Central London
DESCRIPTION:This is a picture of the segregated cycle lanes on Blackfriars Road as they looked on the plans. They don’t look like this now. They are full of cyclists. Safe\, wide\, protected cycle lanes like this one make up about 40% of the Bike Train route. About half of it is through parks. \nA Bike Train is a led-ride and this one is a led-ride to work for those fed up with being at the mercy of the train operators\, who want to take their commute into their own hands (or feet) (or something). Cycling makes you happy\, keeps you healthy and costs nothing. A good deal. \nWe leave Nunhead Station at 8am\, Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye stations at 8.10am. At Denmark Hill we leave from the cafe in Windsor Walk led by Liz Eden (07814 515 715). The two rides meet in Burgess Park and arrive at Blackfriars at 8.45am. The starting point at Peckham Rye is the bike stands behind McDonalds. From Blackfriars riders are taken on individually (if they want) and destinations so far include Faringdon\, Kings Cross\, Westminster\, Mayfair and Tower Hill. \nOur route takes in two parks\, a traffic-calmed backstreet\, the cycling-on-the-pavement lanes on the New Kent Road\, the Elephant and Castle by-pass and then the new TfL segregation. It’s very quiet and enjoyable\, mostly off-road (through parks) and then a backstreet. After that we are on segregation which is where there is a part of the road for bikes only\, protected by about 2m of pavement. We never share the road with a bus or an HGV. \nThe map is here: [www.google.com] \nEntirely free and all welcome. To join in Denmark Hill text Liz Eden on 07814 515 715 or for Nunhead and Peckham text me on 07842 640 207 or don’t do any of that and just turn up. \n

As always\, we will be taking people who want to enjoy their commute to work up the Bike Train route to work — 50% parks\, 40% segregated cycle lanes and 10% traffic-calmed backstreet. We never share the road with a bus or an HGV. \nWe leave Nunhead Station at 8am\, Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye stations at 8.10am. SUMMARY:Bike Train: Winter Timetable: new dates and times
DESCRIPTION:The award-winning Southwark Cyclists Bike Train starts the first day of its Winter Timetable today. All the arrangements are the same but the service will run once a month till Spring. The arrival of Spring will be determined empirically. We will conduct a careful and thorough examination of the weather. \n\n\nWe start at 7.45am from Nunhead Station and pick up riders from Peckham Rye station (from the bike stands behind McDonalds) at 7.55am. We are joined by riders from Denmark Hill who leave that station at 7.55am (from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk) and join the train in Burgess Park. \nWe cycle through two parks\, north along a traffic-calmed backstreet\, onto the pavement-cycling lanes along the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle bypass and then onto the lovely new TfL segregation all the way to Blackfriars. Arrival time approx 8.30am. On time every time. Fun and free. \nTo book your seat at Denmark Hill text Liz Eden on 07814 515 715. Don’t turn up without warning at Denmark Hill because this branch line will be demand-led (management speak for “may not run if there are no passengers”). For Peckham or Nunhead contact me on 07842 640 207 — or don’t book anything at all and just turn up. All welcome. Free. \nNext definite date: December 14th. SUMMARY:Bessemer Grange school run to London Bridge
DESCRIPTION:The school is taking part in Sustrans Big Pedal week http://www.sustrans.org.uk/our-services/who-we-work/teachers/big-pedal. The Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scootering challenge. It inspires pupils\, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school. \nParents will cycle their children to school and then will cycle on themselves to London Bridge – or wherever they need to get to.  We will leave the school at 9hrs and expect to get to London Bridge  by 9.45 or sooner  depending on riders. \nContacts at the school Amy Foster and Henrietta Collier. SUMMARY:Award winning Bike Train returns
DESCRIPTION:This picture might be a bit premature but I’m always hopeful.Last year when the Bike Train began the rains started and almost never stopped. I’m hopeful about that too. \nThe Bike Train starts again at its new time. That means 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it’s OK that they start at the same time. \nThe starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. Camberwell Grove and Windsor Walk have both been closed since we started so this route keeps getting better. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, up a traffic calmed back street\, onto the on-pavement cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the still lovely but no longer so new segregation up St George’s Way and Blackfriars Road. All legal and all as safe as your mother would make it. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and then a group goes north to Kings Cross and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to Kings Cross via Blackfriars
DESCRIPTION:That’s a picture of my back looking over the Thames with a consciousness of a job well done. Come with us on the Bike train and learn off-road and segregated routes to Kings Cross via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train is earlier than it was last year due to popular pressure to get out of bed.
