We call on our future councillors to commit to providing a safe crossing of Heygate Street as part of local redevelopment plans.

The redevelopment of the Heygate Estate will introduce a range of infrastructure changes in the area, creating new north-south routes for road traffic and pedestrians (see ‘Urban design principles’ in this document setting out plans for the Heygate area). To ensure routes recommended for use by cyclists and pedestrians are fit for purpose, an appropriate crossing of Heygate Street for the north-south quiet cycle way must be provided.
A safe cycle and pedestrian crossing will be needed at the northern end of Brandon Street where it crosses Heygate Street. This should be achieved through a combination of signal controls, speed tables and changing the junction priority at Heygate Street/Rodney Place to make Heygate Street the minor road, with most traffic going along Rodney Place to the New Kent Road. This would eliminate risk of injury caused by the cycle crossing being close to the blind bend on Rodney Road/Heygate street.

LCC policy area 3: Protected space on main roads
Quiet zones help keep through motor traffic away from residential streets. But often people will need to cycle along main roads: because that’s where shops and workplaces are, or because they are the most direct routes.
Currently, most main roads make cyclists mix with heavy and/or fast moving motor traffic, which most people find scary. Dedicated space for cycling on main roads gives people of all ages and abilities access to the whole road network by bicycle.
